Hey can you use this??????????

Have you heard this question before? I have been on the receiving end of all kinds of things......the latest...a bag of walnuts in the shell....some odds and ends of eyelash balls of wool.... and a quart of whipping cream which is not out of date but within 2 days.........of course being a "thrifty" type I take it all and use it. Walnuts in the baking and munching, the wool knitted into a scarf of many colors which will go with anything...and the whipping cream topped off a banana cream pie....so what goodies come your way?

A big ole zucchini...offered to be by my hair stylist. I still need to grate it and freeze it for bread this winter....and then pack it with my new Reynolds Handi-Vac.

I'm usually offered stuff of no use (to me anyway)...stuff you gotta dust, which I usually decline...trying to get rid of such things myself anyway.

A friend however did offer me a nice shepherd's hook as she had gotten a bunch of them at a yard sale for nearly nothing.

I find myself more often saying, "Hey, I can use this" when I'm at the recycling center. My latest find...a new phone book I was needing for the surrounding counties.

My neighbor gave me half a tin of canned tuna. I added some mayo and ate it up within hours. I'm still very much alive.

Hey Jodik! There is something about you being here that always makes my heart leep for joy! Thank you. I hear you on the neglect thing. You have actually helped me do very well with my regular plants based on this advice, especially my jades! I must say that most can probably do without the tenderness while I did find one I did neglect for more than a few days almost dead from dehydration.lol I guess there is a balance somewhere. The good thing is that it will probably come back a lot easier with a good dose of rain water than if it was rotted due to the opposite. So far so good, all my roots but one Cattleya that I saved from the Orchid Society were healthy. On the one that had rotted roots, I used your method of cinnamon, and it WORKED! It is doing great now:-) So happy to see you, and in case no one knows, you have been a very long time close friend of mine on every forum but this one thus far. Here we go again.lol I also found out that in my type of mix which dries out very quickly in my warm greenhouse and with all those fans, the Cattleya seedlings would croak if I didn't provide constant moisture. These I can't ignore. So far so good. They are thriving with a good watering and misting every other day at the end of my hands. I have been discovering too that depending on how much light we give and the temps will determin if we can truly ignore them or provide watering more often than not. I know that a mount I tried, died to neglect with only a couple of days of no water, dried out to the bone. I would say that there are too many variables in play here to determine whether ones can be ignored or need a constant source of moisture. I have live hanging moss that needs a constant misting. I am figuring it out though, thanks to you all here and my own hand at it! I am still in the discovery process and finding out how well my orchids respond to my care with the environment, light, mix,air movement, and temps all taken into consideration. This is a blast! Lumpy! You see to have it all together for what you have. Would you believe that I have some of the same plants that are thriving in JUST 'hydroton', some in just plain 'orchiada bark', some in a combination of fine fir bark, some in fine fir bark, pumice, and perlite, some in chunky fir bark, while others in fine bark, charcoal, and perlite? It can very fun seeing how they all respond. It seems no matter what they are in, they need to be in a mix that provides a lot of oxygen and air movement, and does not stay wet too long. Right now I have many in the mix Josh uses that LOVE that. Time will tell if all do well in just about anything, as long as I can provide mixes that stay moist for fine roots, moist but dry out for medium roots, and then dry out fast for large roots. Bob, I have taken your words too to heart. That is exactly what I am doing. I fine mist all my Cattleyas until the top of the mix gets moist, then do a deep watering every weekend. I use warm rain water and make sure I mist and rinse heavily with warm water for about 5 minutes on each. I also have many clips that I have now started to use and in fact on many this am. Thanks for all you do and for everything everybody has done for me. I enjoy you all! I think my experience with living in the tropics and remembering how orchids grow in nature has given me a good headstart, well at least the basics of orchid care. I do know that the only time I ever saw them was under trees! The ones exposed to more sun always had burnt and yellow leaves, but huge flowers. The ones that got dense foliage to protect them always had dark green leaves, but smaller flowers. Mike:-)

sandiefl, yes, yes. I thought it was running up and down the stairs changing beds. But it has left me tired. oh my god, I'm so glad you posted this. I'll be sweating, then not even 3 minutes later, I'm cold. So I have blankets beside me and I'm constantly putting them over me then kickng them off. Did you have radiation? I thought it was the left over affects of the radiation. I'm going to my oncologist and breast surgeon on Aug 2 and 3. They are the best of the best. They are in NYC. I don't mean to say that every doctor in NYC is the best, but, really, these guys are the best. honestly. When I go in August, I will get it out of him. They seem not to want to tell you the symptoms. Did YOU feel that way? For me to tell my hubby "I feel tired", I FEEL TIRED. Remind me to tell you what he says. I'll kick his ass if he doesn't. lol.

I thought about doing that,before but electric blankets are labeled as shock hazzards when exposed to water. With condensing moisture on your tarp barrier, you should be wary just in case. I've used a small space heater with temp set at 50 and the fan circulating air that I put it under a trash can lid to shed condensation just in case. A blanket plus plastic/tarp is my normal heavy cold protection method, the blanket keeps freeze contact damage against the exterior plastic.

Oh, Ladydi. I had to laugh at your message directly above. I will never forget when I first learned how smart these babies are around computers. My youngest granddaughter was only 2 years old. I had her for the weekend. I was at my computer and was having some trouble getting out of a program or website or something (so long ago, I truly don't recall what the situation was), my little granddaughter came up and wanted me to pick her up and asked me what I was doing. Picked her up and told her I was trying to get out of whatever it was. She settled in my lap, reached up with her chubby little index finger and punched the ESC button, and I was out. I was so shocked; had never thought of using the ESC button. I am still in awe of and wonder how in the world she knew that would work. After she hit it, she looked up at me and said, "See, Grandma?" That memory is still so vivid in my mind, I even recall what she was wearing. 🤡

I really lucked out on Halloween. I forgot that i signed up to bring cupcakes in my daughters 3rd grade class. Everything has to be store bought. No homemade goodies allowed. I was having a penny pinching week and my friend had several trays of uneaten cupcakes(store bought) leftover from her weekend party. She gave me all of them. Worked out great for both of us!

Today, my neighbor brought over three Christmas Crafts books, a pair of brand new sweat pants, and a couple of magazines that I don't subscribe to. I was happy to take all of it and I sent her home with a tablecloth, a set of six molds for baking, and a book. We do this often and it works out great for both of us.

A couple of weeks after I moved last year, one of my new neighbors had a moving sale. I gave her several of my moving boxes and she gave me a couple of salon shampoo and conditioners and some magazines.

This summer, I dug up nine shrubs the previous owners had planted so I could have a garden. I gave them to my next door neighbor because I hate to throw stuff like that away. She planted them in her back yard so we are both happy.

Next door neighbor called me, 5pm, 'Have you had dinner yet// no // bring over a container, or two. She has bad hearing so .. OK.

Took over two deli maccaronni, think its 4lbs containers,, with one lid.

She instantly put one Huge stuffed green pepper in each one. No way would two of them fit in one container, they were big!
'Why only one lid? , thats all i could find. Instantly she popped a tupperware lid out of thin air, that fit!

Anyhow, One sliced in half fills a good sized soup bowl -
looks like four meals out of those two stuffed peppers.

You aren't going to believe this, but I swear that it is true. My DH's brother bought a brand new pickup truck, so my DH offered to give him $1000 for his old truck. His brother just gave us the truck. DH has already been offered $2500 for it. Generous BIL don't you think?

I gave my brother a small pickup truck a few years back. I had bought it brand new and had driven it for nine years. Then I had kids and the truck didn't have room or the safety features I needed. I loved my truck and would have cried if I had sold it so I gave it away to my brother who I knew needed it. There are some things in life that are worth more than money.

It seems I'm the recipient of everything anybody doesn't want anymore. Most of my yard is planted with free plants. Two of my neighbors died and left me tons of free stuff.

Last week I got a free quart of Spinach dip from work that they were giving away rather than throwing it out. I gave it to the kids at work to share during their breaks. Today I got free lunch at work..leftovers from a food demo.

Now, if someone would just give me a free car, I'd be happy!

My two daughters were at the pizza parlor near closing time. The staff gave away any odd slices left over. They got about 20 slices of various kinds of pizzas, stuff like chicken pizza and meatball pizza, stuff I wouldn't ordinarily buy but was interested in "trying". It was a great haul! Oh, they close at 1 am, so my kids weren't out really late. They are 18 and 19 and no longer have a cUrfew.
