I only know the answer to a couple of your questions, but I'm sure someone else will know the rest. My plug molds are hardwired, and they are connected to GFCI breakers in the circuit breaker box (so the plug molds themselves don't necessarily need to be GFCI).

Yes, standard plugmold is hardwired and can be cut to length. Home Depot sells the plug-in kind which is not cuttable. I believe the shortest length is 3 ft. Another thing to keep in mind is that since the outlets are spaced at 6", you will only be able to have 3 on a 15" strip.

I don't think they can be mounted directly onto granite, but onto the cabinet that is closest to it. Lsander (above) has angled plugmold. Mine is attached to a strip of wood matching my cabinets cut at a 45 degree angle. The back of this strip also hides some of the wire that was fished through.

The "standard" colors are ivory and black rubber and stainless--this means a large electrical supply house should have them in stock or be able to get them readily from the Wiremold Company. You can get many other colors as a special order.

Electricians hate to put them in because they are a PITA.

lsander...your pics were the ones i saw that inspired me to do plug mold on the island instead of having just two recepticles in the book case portion.

i probably don't need more than three plugs, and i don't know how i'd manage more without running it the legnth of that side, which would put plugs under the sink...and infront of the cabinet door of the sink cabinetwhich i think would be a no no wouldn't it?

on my island there are no blank sides. each side has some sort of operable area, drawers, doors or trash compactor so i think the little area over the book case side is all i can spare :(

We put a 15" plugmold in the back of DW's triangular baking center counter. It's 3" lower than the rest of the island, allowing the plugmold to nestle in between the upper and lower portions. We deliberately chose white plugmold to make the plugs more visible but then painted the metal plugmold strip to match the Absolute Black granite.

Another word about the island angled plugmold. I told my KD about it in the beginning so when she ordered the end panels, she made sure there was enough room so the decorative part of the panel would not interfere. In other words, the decorative molding may be done an inch lower than usual to accomodate the plugmold.
