Oval Cutter Help

I have a fiskar cutter that won't stay locked.

I start the cut and then it keeps getting smaller in size.

Any tricks to keeping this fixed or do I need a new one?

I use a cutting board, maybe I need their templates instead?

gagama: I had a fiskars circle cutter and could never get it to work right. I just returned it to Target. I really like the cutting system from CM (Cre@tive Memories). Easy to use and never a mistake. I am going to try others though to use with shape sizes that CM doesn't have. I have seen Colozzule (?sp) which has about 5 sizes for each shape and that would be great when matting pictures with several different colors. Good Luck

Are you talking about the round one with the "spring" in the middle, where you lower the blade as needed? I used one that belonged to a friend of mine and didn't care for it. It's the one that follows a cutting template and works kind of like a Spyrograph (remember those?!) I was pretty disappointed. I've been looking for something that can cut ovals and circles cleanly. Any other suggestions? I"ll look up the CM cutter you mentioned.

I don't have the CM oval cutter, but I've used it and I must say that I hate it. I wasn't comfortable with it AT ALL. My CMC told me that it took her many tries before she became comfortable with it too. I've never tried any other kind - I still just use templates and cut them out by hand. To me, it's easier than trying to fiddle with that awkward contraption CM came out with. Ok, here's what I don't like about it - I find that it's not a smooth "swing" around the arcs, it leaves sort of a lip around the edge of the picture, and it often leaves a little "hangnail" (for lack of a better word) where you meet up at the end with where you began. I wish they had figured otu a way to make an oval cutter just like their OLD circle cutter - I loved that thing!

CM oval cutter - yuck yuck yuck!! personally, I don't like it. I find it awkward to use, leaves a lip around the edge of the picture, and limits the sizes of the ovals. I'd love to see one made exactly like the old cm circle cutter - the arm that swings around the blade (does that make sense?). I just didn't like it but I'm told it takes a lot of getting used to.

You are right. First I had some regrets to not ask my DH to bring me back the guide too, because it is sometimes a little bit difficult to place the oval in the exact place you want, but the shapes are perfect. And I assume that with some practice I can place the ovals where I want. I cut a paper before to check if the size is the good one, and then I imagine 2 perpendicular lines crossing on the center of my subject, and I adjust these lines with the 4 grooves located at the base of the oval cutter (it is the Helpful hint on the paper given with the cutter) and it works pretty well! good luck! When house hunting we saw a house that was nothing special by itself but had the most amazing(and probably very expensive) windows. It stood on a rather boring street, was nice but not the best layout inside, and I didn't like how it faced open space for dog walking with some superugly fense around. Yet the windows made this otherwise non descript place in a way that I remember it 4 years later..to the point I gave it brief consideration even. I told my DH "they'll sell it tomorrow". I was right. It got multiple offers and went under a contract in a day or two. And the sole reason for it was these windows:) Which, by the way, they had only in the front..:) The house you show is not bad at all, if you compare it to many. Imagine it with different windows..add , mentally, flowers to that tree in the front..the inside should be seen, in order to make suggestions. And one's style should be known. You can't do anything truly great to the inside of the house where there's not "you" in it. Nobody cares that much about orange peel of the walls- art is what makes people stop and stare. Color that'll make them feel cocooned or invigorated. How the room will reavel itself differently from each point. People love to discover. Give that sense of discovery, even with few and mundane things it can be given. But of course one can go for smooth finish if orange peel irritates him. One can go for wallpaper or murals if he loves them enough. One can add arches, skylights, moldings..glass doors when one needs sense of privacy without loosing the light, where makes sense..carve out more storage.. It's a question of budget (windows are very expensive for example) and thoughtful consideration and what bugs one, and what doesn't, and what brings most joy.

I second the CM cutting system...it's GREAT!!!!!!!! Nothing beats it, and it's so easy.

How much do these cost? I'm really hesitant about going through a representative - it reminds me of other unnamed popular consultant-based organizations and you inevitably get talked into buying more! Can I find something simliar more cheaply, without having to order it?

Thank you for all the info. I purchased the Creative Memories Cutting System with oval today. I haven't used it but I'll start in this weekend. I found a consultant on the Creative Memories website for my area. Very nice woman and helpful. The cost was $38.00 plus tax. She left me a catalog for other interests I might have. She asked if I was interested in classes, etc. and at this time I'm not. She was fine with that. Good experience. Can't wait to try my new tools.

Check out eBay Phyllis...there are alot of them listed on there, and sometimes you can get them cheaper than through a rep.

$38 isn't bad, especially if the product does what it says it does! I was expecting it to be outrageous or something. I suppose I could justify that to myself since I"ve been driving all over the place looking for something similar and not quite finding what I wanted. I looked on Ebay but I wasn't really sure what I was looking for, I will try again. Thanks!

Here is another plug for the CM cutting system. I love them! If you check out other popular scrapping sites, CM circle/oval cutters get rave reviews. I had no luck w/ the Fiskars Oval cutter either.

If you have all 3 CM blades (red, blue, green) you should be able to mat your pics easily. Enjoy!
