Fiskars Oval Cutter

I just bought a Fiskars oval cutter yesterday, and after practicing A LOT, I think I have got the hang of it. I can cut quick, precise ovals if the cutter is set on the wide setting, but I am running into trouble with the narrow setting. The thing slides or snags the paper. I am sure I just need more practice, but do you have any tips? Please don't tell me to buy a Creative Memories one, I have a Fiskars and I don't want a Creative Memories one!

Hi carla, I have one also and have not used it much. the other day I was at my local craft store and they have a set of the fiskars circle cutter, oval cutter,cutting mat and a guide to use for the oval and one for the circle cutter. Kind of like the one that CM sells with their circle cutter. I already have both and I did not see the guide on sale seperate. christine

HI,
I would like to buy an oval cutter soon (as soon as one of my relatives will go to USA). I was thinking about fiskars, because I think it would be easier to shop in a short time than the one by MM. But I have somme question:
is-it easy to find in any Mickaels' or Wall-mart ?
what is its price about ?
does it use the same blades than the circular one by fiskars ? and if not, what is the price for the blades ?

CM oval cutter - yuck yuck yuck!! personally, I don't like it. I find it awkward to use, leaves a lip around the edge of the picture, and limits the sizes of the ovals. I'd love to see one made exactly like the old cm circle cutter - the arm that swings around the blade (does that make sense?). I just didn't like it but I'm told it takes a lot of getting used to.

Ok. I'm going to hang my head and admit that the CM one isn't as bad as I originally thought (see my post above from March 9). I've since used it numerous times and have gotten much better at it. It's not the sinister piece of equipment that I felt it was. But it definitely takes some getting used to. I will admit that I liked the old CM CIRCLE cutter better and I got the hang of that one really quickly. This one takes a lot more practice. I'm still not comfortable enought to BUY it, but when I'm at crops, I don't panic about using it anymore. :) And Donna - I can't believe your CMC gives away stuff like that at crops!!! wow!! My CMC hasn't even been in the business for a year yet so she can't afford to give away big stuff yet. I'm looking forward to her little business to start turning a good profit so she can raffle off more than idea books and stickers. :) Patti

Billie, Don't get discouraged with your oval cutter. I have cut some great ovals with it. I just cut an oval in an oval out of black paper, put some large circles and a red bow on it then mounted it over a really cute pic of my three year old niece with Minnie Mouse. It looks great. I have found that it does work best with heavier paper and especially on a cutting mat. I first tried it using a magazine as a mat and did get a lot of bunching of my paper. I have also discovered that it helps to sort of hold your paper while turning. I just got the guides a while ago and am enjoying it even more now that I know exactly where I am cutting. If you've been practicing "alot", you could try putting in a new blade.

That's a good tip, Izzy, but actually it was the narrow setting that I started out on! I was about to give up, then I tried the wider setting and it worked fine. Maybe I will just have to always make wide ovals. :)

Joelle, I got mine at Wal-Mart for $17.96. I have heard that they have them at Michael's, and they are probably available at most places that sell Fiskars products. The blades are not the same ones that are used in the Fiskars circle cutter. At Wal-mart here, the replacement blades are $3.96 and come two in a package.

If they do carry it in Michael's, have your husband grab a weekly sales circular as he walks in - they always have a 40% off coupon on the front of it. IF there are no circulars left, then the cashiers usually give the 40% if it's mentioned when checking out.

The item has to be regular price though - it can't be on sale that week.

I have a Fiskars oval cutter and I don't like it. It is very hard to get the picture "centered" right. There are 2 other ones out there besides CM. One makes only fat ovals and the other... I might be interested in.

Here's an update. I used the oval cutter to cut photos for the first time today. It worked great! For my first try I chose an out of focus, icky photo, just for practice. Then I cut several ovals and matted them. One came out flat on top, because I misjudged the swing of cutting arm, but that wasn't the cutter's fault, and I just overlapped a perfect oval on top of it on the layout, and you couldn't tell a thing! I like the Fiskars so far.
