When do you repair and when do you replace?

Howdy! I'm a newbie sewer...I sew things together and that's about it, so don't make fun!

My sewing machine is rarely used but I'd like to sew more. Unfortunately, the last few sessions have been getting a little scary. I think I might need a new machine, but maybe this one can be fixed. The problem is the pedal--it gets very warm and sticks so that you have to kick it really hard or unplug the machine to stop it. That doesn't make for a nice finish.

Does this sound like something that can be fixed? It was my grandmother's machine and I'd guess from the 60s or 70s--it's avocado green. Should I try to get it fixed or should I try to figure out what modern machine would be an adequate replacement?

Thanks for any assistance!
