First Scrapbook help, please...

Making a 50th wedding album for my inlaws, and have a few questions... Having never seen an album, I'm winging it!

I did buy a kit but I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. Do I cut and paste pictures onto the heavy paper and then put it into plastic pages? Do I paste on both sides of the paper, or put 2 into each plastic page? Simple things I know, but this is not explained in the instructions. BTW, after 4 pages- I am addicted also :) TIA~ Lori

I'm assuming by heavy paper you mean the page. Yes ,you can use both sides of the page. When you say paste, did it come with the kit? I'm concerned about it being 'acid free.' Also, be VERY CAREFUL when you cut pictures. Look closely at the pictures before cutting anything away. Don't want to cut out your in-law's history. There is a string on here called 'To crop or not...' Please read it. And welcome to the addiction!

I advise that you use only one side of the page and then put them into the page protector back to back. That way you can move them around later if you need to. I always do that.

I did not want this post to just have one or two messages because I really think what you are doing is wonderful and we should offer whatever help we can. Your daughter is very lucky to have you do this for her. The way I did my books fast but with great detail was to not get all wrapped up in making it too fancy. Keep it simple. You can choose several primary colors for your papers. One idea I do is to have each page have one of the colors. So the first pages will be red, second pages blue, then green then yellow. Then start the colors all over again. You can lay out the pages first then assign the colors. But stick with just a few colors so the book will have a nice flow. And just remember, too much, can be too much. The reason I redid my daughter's baby book was because it was too buzy, too many different colors that did not flow when going page to page. If you are spending too much time trying to make it perfect, you won't have any fun. Keep asking for advise. You can also go to craft stores and they offer classes or days that you can go in with others. You will have folks to give you advise right then and there.

When I look back at my very 1st scrapbook, I get disgusted at how much I thought I had to cut the pictures. Now, I only cut off the part of the photo that no one would ever be interested in...such as a recliner that takes up the whole left side of a photo, or excess grass at the bottom of a pic. I get tons of compliments on my albums now, and people tell me I should quit nursing and just scrapbook professionally. Good luck w/your album, and congratulations. There's a ton of stuff to choose from out there, but be creative and imaginative. Don't buy stickers of flowers...create your own. Don't place stickers messily over your entire page..group them together to make a scene or corner decoration. This way, they won't take away from your pictures (which should be the focal point of your album). Hope this helps.

It sounds like such a neat project. I have found when I cut out my pictures(like around their heads,etc.) that I am never happy with them and wish that I hadn't done it. I see cute layouts with them cut out but it doesn't work with me. I don't have a scanner but I don't know if you scanned the photo if you could lighten anything up. Do you have negatives that you could take in to a photo shop and just ask for advice. I had my daughters graduation picture with her cap and gown and the dark gown just blended in to the background so I mounted it on white to try and lighten it up a little. Good luck.

I agree with Carla. If you have the type of album that puts pages into page protectors then using only one side and putting two pages back to back in one gives you the greatest flexability.

Dear Lori,
The best advice I can give you is to buy a good scrapbook idea book. It can give you the basics, and be there later in the middle of the night (yeah, after the addiction takes hold you will do it at all hours.LOL) when everyone else is gone to bed, to help answer your questions and give you good ideas on what to do with your pages. There are plenty available at Walmart. I think there is one there for about $12.00 (good money spent) that has a brownish cover that is great for beginners. Penny
