Tiger Wood Hardwood Floors

I have narrowed my choice down to Amendoim versus Tiger Wood for my Engineered Hard Wood Floors. Anyone choose Tiger Wood or didn't choose it and why? Any pics? It is so rich looking. My only fear is it is a little darker than my furniture but has the light shades in it that go well to me. My friend thinks I should stick with the lighter Amendoim.

Lynn, wouldn't the Tiger wood flooring be busy? It doesn't sound quite like what you've been striving for. Maybe not traditional like your townhouse either? Have you seen a full pic or room with it installed?

Squirrel, I love the sample but you are right that I have not seen a full picture of a room in person to see what it would look like. I love the yellow, reds and orange colors and the grain of the Tiger Wood Sample. I also loved the Santos Mahagony (various shades of yellow/gold, orange, deep red, lighter red and browns... not real dark like I think of when I think of Mahagony) and the Bavarian Cherry ws beautuiful as well. I loved the Amendoim but I just wish the Amendoin had some of the yellow colors in it and had more red but it does match my office the best and is a little bit lighter so my Cherry Wood desk will stand out but still match since it also has various shades of colors.

I was at a new neighbor's home today (met while walking our dogs) and she showed me the hardwood floors that the owner of the home has that came with his townhouse. She is his Nanny I found out and that is wonderful that I now have a walking partner. She is so nice and let me discuss my hard woods obsession with her. :)

I fell in love with his hardwood floors and I am sure the floor was one of the exotic woods that I looked at that ended up not being too dark at all but just so rich and beautiful with the color variation. I wish I knew what species that wood was and the owner would like to know also since the steps have only plywood on them that was under the rugs and do not match the beautiful floor that he would like to match.

You need to do a little more archeological digging still. You need to know the whole construction of the floor before you can decide how best to install something new. I'd take up that plywood piece in the kitchen and see what's under it. It's higher than the surrounding floor, so needs to go. You should also be able to see from there what subfloor is under the original kitchen hardwood. It's too bad the space under your entryway is finished, but I'd still do some exploring from below to see what's under there, and to figure out the fix to stop it from squeaking. Is it drywall below or a drop ceiling? I know it probably seems like a pain to tear out drywall, but if you cut out a clean patch, like 2' x the width of the joists, it'll be relatively simple to repair. Just make sure to cut it down the center of the joists so that there's room to screw the patch piece to it later. Cut the hole under the area that squeaks the most, if you can. Have someone walk on and watch the floor from below to see what's moving. It might be as simple as pounding in a couple shims from below, or face-nailing a loose board from above. You want to find out what's underneath the hardwood. It might be laid directly on the floor joists, or there might be 10" wide boards that the hardwood is nailed to. Another thought is to take out a board in the hallway, since that's not original and you want to replace it. See what the subfloor is there. I am a bit puzzled at why, when you've stripped the kitchen down to the original hardwood, it's still higher than the hallway floor. Is your current surface perhaps not the original kitchen hardwood? Peeling back the plywood area will help determine that. BTW, I haven't heard of that stop squeaking product you linked to, so can't offer any personal opinion. And don't pour self-leveling compound over top of hardwood. It needs to go over plywood.

Stripping a veneer surface is not a problem if you take reasonable care with your stripper clean up and just do enough sanding to remove the fuzzies. There will be problems if the veneer is bubbling or otherwise damaged by moisture. Only you can decide what is "harmonious." For some people, it would need to be a fairly exact match, side-by-side. In general, that's a tough problem, made tougher by dissimilar woods and if there's color left in the pieces you are stripping. "Medium dark" and "medium walnut" don't really have much standardized meaning. You can take 3 different cans of "medium walnut" stain and apply them to the same piece of wood and they will come out differently. You can also take the same can of stain and apply it to three different woods, and sometimes different parts of the same piece of lumber or the same species from different trees, and they will come out different color. Some stains also look different on veneer vs. solid woods. The same piece can also look radically different in different lighting conditions (natural, fluorescent, incandescent, and LED) or next to different colored walls or floors, and it can look different.

Choosing the right flooring type isn't enough for your living condition. You will have to consider the types of cut: flat sawn, rift and quarter sawn, quarter sawn or live sawn. Quarter sawn and rift & quarter sawn will be best choices, because expansion and contraction is along the thickness of the wood. You will need climate control all year round. 70 degrees at 40 % relative humidity is where you want to be throughout the year. The use of a humidifier/dehumidifier will be needed year round. Although, engineered flooring is more stable than solid. Using the wrong wood specie in your living condition can run the risk of de-laminating with engineered wood. If, the top veneer is more or less stable than it's core and backing. You will experience de-laminating in extreme humidity swings. Take in account of what the engineered flooring is constructed of: mdf or plywood. The width of the flooring will account for how much expansion and contracting also. 2 1/4" strips are the most stable. As you go wider, expect to see more wider seasonal gaps. Proper acclimating is critical, should be performed with a moisture meter. For 2 1/4" strip flooring , sub-floor and flooring moisture should be within 4%. For all other widths 2% moisture differentiation is allowed or should not be exceeded. Don't forget proper expansion gaps, which is the thickness of your flooring, example: 3/4" thick = 3/4" gap. Sub-floor type and condition will affect the performance of wood floors. All this needs to be considered for the proper and successful performance of your wood floors.

If you want something that is waterproof, they do make AquaGuard or NuCore laminate flooring that is made with recycled rubber. You could also go with a wood look tile option. But you could never really go wrong with a hardwood floor to increase the value of your home. Just throwing a few options into the ring. Kitchen Forum one of the last posts had beautiful pics of the Tiger Wood showing it is ligher when first installed and then gets richer and darker.

Thank you Squirrel so much for posting the links above that I will look at after this post since I saved the link to the thread on the kitchen forum to share on this post for others who want to see a finished Tiger Wood floor. The beautiful sample was lighter.

Lynn, I was also deciding between Tiger Wood and Amendoin. I have been working with Shannon at the listed website and she has been very helpful. The bottom line is that I am going with the Tigerwood because it looks like nothing any one else has - it's a little funky, which I like. I do not work for this company (I have been a member of GW for over a year) but just wanted to steer you that way so can look at their pictures.

lynn_r-ct, thank you! I just viewed all of the site and gallery of pics and emailed to ask for a quote as well as ordered samples. I will use my samples to see how the Amendoim Wood changes color. I may order the Tiger Wood Samples tomorrow after I get an email back regarding questions I have. I am not 100% sure if I should use hardwood floors in my home office due to my furkidz that sleep there and are with me all day and sometimes make mistakes but maybe I can use this beautiful flooring in my family room and upstairs and do one room at a time.
