Replacement Door for SubZero

Hi All.

We just purchased a house that has a terrible kitchen but new appliances. I guess they thought it would make the kitchen look nicer. We are considering moving the Wolf to our condo (which we will sell after the reno) and thinking about the Sub Zero. The Sub Zero is a little older, 600 series I think, but it has an integrated door. I was wondering if anyone has ever replaced a door on a Sub? We would like to have plain old SS and not paneling. Also, I will take any advice regarding moving appliances!!

Anything can be done. The question would be whether it would be any cheaper than replacing the whole unit.

Call your local repair agent and get a quote for parts and labor. It's the only way to know for sure. Is there any time left on the warranty? That may also influence your decision.
I doubt you can get a new door yourself and make the fix yourself (though it's worth a call!), and the chances of finding someone demoing the same unit in better condition than yours are slim.

I think it's worth any money to hire a moving company to move appliances. Even if you move the rest of the house yourself. They usually rent by the hour, with a minimum of 3-4 hours, and they know what to do (you can ask specifics if you want to know more). I don't know if this was your plan all along, but you didn't specify.

The door does not need to be replaced. You just need to purchase the stainless steel panel for that model. Contact a SubZero retailer, provide them with the model number and they should be able to guide you to the right part and cost. The wood part of the fridge is replaceable. It is just a cover. I am assuming it is paneled in wood right now.

I've had Sub-Zeros in various homes for nearly 30 years. I'd never consider another brand. I also think the refrigerators the company is producing today are the best they've ever made. The Sub-Zero warranty is second to none, and on the couple of occasions when I required a service call, Sub-Zero's service was fast and efficient. In both instances, the required repair was covered under warranty. I doubt you'd be happy with another refrigerator. Sub-Zero's dual compressor system really does make a difference, especially in the refrigerator compartment where the higher humidity level in a Sub-Zero keeps food, and especially produce, fresher much longer than in an ordiary fridge. You'll also find that the model 650 has a much larger freezer section than in your previous model, with much better accessibility. The pull-out drawer is a huge improvement. The idea of a counter-depth slide-in fridge sounds awful to me, especially the idea of leaving the old Sub-Zero grill above. It would look sloppy, unfinished and like you were skimping -- particularly if the edges of the cabinetry around the refrigerator opening aren't finished. Do yourself a favour and go for another Sub-Zero -- you'll be much happier. But if you're still tempted to look at another brand of built-in -- be sure to compare the warranties. Just my two cents. BK - you are just flat out wrong wrong here. SZ makes their own fridges in their own factories, and about the only thing that is of Whirlpool design is the $50 ice maker unit that 60+% of the industry uses ! They fabricate their own steel and plastic cases, source their own, copper and glass, spray their own insulation , designed their own ethelyene filter, and on and on. Whirlpool wasn't even in the fridge business until a decade after SZ was producing theirs , and the only reason Whirlpool got in it was because of a merger. and, we all know about mergers. SZ has and these units in real homes for twelve plus months already , so they kinda know what is flawed with them. These also aren't just some half baked platform off the drawing board like your Maytag example. Further , Maytag ceases to exist because they were boneheads. Their Neptune debacle blew a hole in the ship, and the Amana acquisition enlarged it. And guess who picked up the pieces folks? Yep, BK's white knight and general do gooder, Whirlpool. Happy, I know it's a tough decision for you right now with this model change especially since they are different sizes. I would go for he new design, simply because that 7xx platform is almost twenty years old now and the 36" one is not the best size anyway. Have you considered one of the 36" ers from one of the Miele, Gaggenau, Thermador cousins? They are all top quality and roughly the same price as that 736. Available now and first of the year no changes, proven platform with nice features, and they integrate very smoothly.

The repair person said it’s had a lot of work done in the past, but they’re not sure how reliable that is, as there aren’t records. What kind of work? Was it done by that repair person? If not, how does he know? Is he factory-trained or authorized by SZ? It all sounds kind of weird—especially the topping up of the refrigerant part and the lack of a repair estimate. If the house is located within reasonable distance (100 miles or so) of a different factory-trained technician, I think spending the $100 or $200 (or whatever it is) on another service call in order to get a second opinion would be a very good idea. After all, replacing the unit is not going to be an inexpensive endeavor. If they haven’t done so already, your parents could call SZ and see if they have any service records for that fridge. And call around to area appliance repair companies to see if any of them have worked on it, too. The records can be looked up using the serial number, the house address and/or the previous owners’ names. Btw, I own a 48” SZ, model 632F.

We replaced a front black panel for our SZ when the repairman scratched it. It took me awhile to chase the post market part supplier -- when I get home I'll see if I still have the company name and post it. I think it was about $300? Repair company paid for it . . .

Thanks everyone! I'm going to call Sub Zero and see what they say!

We are not the DIY types, so we are goign to hire people to move the appliances. I was wondering if it was worth it to move the Subzero or try and sell it. If I can get the replacement door for a few hundred bucks then we will def move it!
