Sub-Zero vs. Bosch vs. Liebherr
Comments (10)I had the 30" Liebherr freestanding with bottom mount freezer for 1-1/2 years and loved it -- quiet, steady and a great freezer with the drawers. It held a lot for an apartment fridge and the freezer kept DH's ice cream in a perfect state. The shelves were a non issue when everything goes in. It was installed to look freestanding right up against a wall and the 0 clearance thing was a lifesaver because there were no strips required on the wall side. The drawers were a bit tricky to remove for cleaning but they did come out with no issues re the door. I just had to be careful about jamming them on the door because of the installation. The lighting was excellent. Food stayed really fresh for a very long time and it was completely quiet. Blissfully so. The only nuisance was the drain that needed to be cleaned out from time to time with Q tips but that may have been due to really bad quality water from old building pipes. My girlfriend has the 36" French door, installed mid-year last year and has issues. First ice maker then something else. Hers is built in and completely behind wood panels and looks fabulous. But also looks like it will be replaced (though her fridge has been really jinxed in this kitchen -- this is the 4th or 5th one that hasn't been quite right). Marthavila has the same model with 0 issues and adores it. DD has always had SZs and loves them. Now has a Miele 36" bottom mount but says she still prefers the SZ. I've been in and out of all her SZs in the various houses and the only difference I found between those and the Liebherr was that they were slightly noisier and more heavy duty-looking inside. But I don't feel the beefy insides make all that much difference with the fridge if, ultimately, the function is equivalent for less investment. When my Viking 36" fridge goes (and it will) I plan to replace it with Liebherr based on previous experience....See MoreSub-Zero vs Miele vs ?
Comments (11)@msklh - The Viking was 10 and had been repaired several times including the freon, which I was told in retrospect is equivalent to open heart surgery on a fridge. Should have replaced it then. I went through an exhaustive search for the replacement & there's a long thread on this forum with lots of details, plus back and forth from some really knowledgeable folk. Here's the link http://ths.gardenweb.com/discussions/2312992/refrigerator-again-perspective-please?n=76 My opening was 24" deep and the Viking was integrated. But I didn't have depth for SZ integrated. Long story short: Finalists were Miele & SZ. But we get frequent power outages here which Miele is built for and SZ is not. That was the deciding factor. Most decide on features like layout etc. Many like their Thermadors and that would have fit. But I didn't care for the interior quality and was unsure about service in my area. It also was nearly as much as Miele and I knew their quality & service. I personally loathe the taste of fridge water so water in the fridge -- apart from ice -- is the last thing I'd ever want. I do miss that slim full width drawer in my Viking as it gave me 3 big drawers vs 2 in the Miele. The little deli drawer is OK. It can be removed but I cram it full. The two big crisper drawers are very deep and hold a ton. But the big difference is the openness of the shelves. What I like best is the door racks which are super sturdy and hold all our drinks. The fridge is quiet (there are some faint compressor noises but my Vike was so noisy we could hear it upstairs), temperature is excellent. Freezer is excellent with 2 shelves I like a lot. Aesthetically, I wasn't mad for the look of the huge SZ grill which I would have had protruding from the cabinets with a standard install. Mieles vent is behind the freezer door on the bottom. That makes the compartment higher than the SZ's. The Miele lighting is outstanding. You can see everything even when the fridge is crowded. It was also about $800 less than the same style SZ here. Nice benefit since I had to pay for install. But either one is a good choice. When I compared them feature to feature it was a tough decision....See MoreRealtors, Builders: is a 36" Sub-Zero too small for a higher-end home?
Comments (33)SZ is certainly a premium brand with the "whoo-hoo" appeal. Sort of sexy, even though the space is very slim. I HATE them, and rejected them for my latest custom build. As a cook, I really need what I just built- an extremely functional kitchen that has a "quadrangle" cooking space. Not just the triangle any more, and my pantry, cook top, oven, and sinks (always one to serve the cooktop)- none of more than a few steps away. It's a dream to cook in, and my refrigerator has a bunch of drawers/compartments.shelves to house all that is needed- at my fingertips. So take care- high end buyers have been through the "wars" with these appliances. If something goes wrong, check into service costs in your area. Make sure you have a LOCAL company, not just an 800#, to call in. It can be very expensive, to fix, and you could be waiting a long time for it. In the meantime, you have a big freezer- completely un-meaningful for me, but maybe you. And another pantry around the corner. High end people who cook often look at the # of steps and meal they can think of will cost them. Hey- if your sales market projects the wealthy younger set, as most probable, no problem. But experience doesn't always love these....See MoreWolf vs. Thermador vs. Big Chill vs. SubZero vs Cafe
Comments (24)Just came from the wolf/subzero manufacturer store in Salt lake City. They are running behind about 14-20 months and in some cases longer. Our renovation will take 7-8 months and frankly I don’t care how reliable the brand it, I can not go that long without appliances. I will probably lean on the thermadore for refrigeration/wall ovens and range top . Keep my fiskal paykal dishwasher it is reliable, my first one lasted 18 years and my newer one going strong after three. Conveinent two drawers for smaller frequent loads. For the butler pantry I will probably go with Big chill refrigerator/ dishwasher the reviews are strong enouth to support the purchase...See Morekaseki
