Pulling my 9th grd.out of PS which Homeschooling curriculum?

We have several to choose from....but are overwhelmed. Help us ......we are pulling her out so she will not reutrn after Thanksgiving. Thank you in advance!

It's really hard to give advice unless we know a lot more about you and your daughter. Why did you pull her out- was it for social reasons, or did you think that she wasn't being educated well?

Are you looking for a Christian curriculum (which is what I'm most familiar with), or something secular? Could you continue to use the books she's been using, at least for this year, or is that part of what you want to get away from?

There are many companies (like aBeka) that will sell you a packaged curriculum, covering all the core subjects for her grade level, but I find that it's usually best to pick and choose from different companies to give you a variety of styles.

There's also the question of how your daughter learns best, and how comfortable you are teaching high-school subjects. If you are not confident, you might really need a workbook style curriculum.

Be prepared to spend a fair amount of money, especially if you choose a pre-packaged curriculum. That's why it might be a good idea to continue to use her current textbooks, if that's possible.

Thanks I just checked the forum again. We pulled her out b/c of social pressures. So many drugs and sex issues. She said she could not learn b/c so many we acting up in class as well. She is pretty shy but not antisocial. She loves animals and cooking and farm life. Thanks for any help!

Just heard from the principal - form letter he has to send out, no ramifications, he just wanted to make sure we were aware in case we were keeping DS home from school if/when he just was too tired or vague "didn't feel well." Said he might have to contact me again and discuss the "problem" if DS misses school regularly (he gave example of a couple of days each week!) for the rest of the school year, but if he gets sick again and he has to be out 3 days next month, no problem, just call in each day like we've been doing, no dr's note required, no summer school, nothing. He said the average number of sick days (roughly, off the top of his head) in his school was 5! With the flu and the stomach bug going around this year, I find it hard to believe that was it, though like I said it's been a rough year (not just for DH - some schools around here closed in October since over 30% of the students had the flu).

Has anyone used Continental Academy for home schooling? I need to figure something out for my girl; have to get her back in school. The year we moved she was in vo-tech; they taught 3 subjects in the 1st 1/2 of the year, then the others at the 2nd 1/2 of the year. I ended up pulling her out & putting her in high school; she then had mono, right before exams (sold house). The new school would not register her because they did not have her complete records so she missed finals. She repeated 9th grade; then had a bad year medically (fell down steps, had no air way due to tonsils which were taken out during winter break; then had medical issues due to the mono; lost about 80 pounds. School wanted "chronic illness notes" which I got, but it did not cover a few days because of wording & there was no time to fix due to school ending. They kept her back again. She refused to go in September. I didn't have time to fight them because of hubby's cancer. My plan is to have her get the credit she needs to get put back into school so she can graduate. Continental academy was suggested to me.

Thanks Talley, it is good to know I am not alone. It drives me crazy when I do spend hours cleaning, only to have DH come home and move something centimeters. Or I haven't touched something all day, and he will come home and move it. AAARRGH. Just leave it alone!!! Now to the office. I do have a good 2 drawer filing cabinet I think we got from an office that was moving, but it is full! Although I am sure it needs to be cleaned out. Right now we have a corner computer desk that has really no storage. Everything is on the top of the desk, cubbies, in baskets, paper, paper everywhere! I do research for a coupon website and am the secretary for the music boosters at the high school, so there is a lot of paper. Just need a better filing system. I do have in the closet a cabinet that right now houses lots of craft stuff that I haven't used in forever. I am thinking about taking that out, cleaning it out and repurposing it. Maybe paint and a little molding, a cork board on the front, baskets and labels inside... I need a real desk with drawers to put stuff away. I have 4 different rolly carts with different size drawers for various and sundry things. One holds kids school supplies I try to always have on hand so there is no running to the store in the middle of the night! Buy them in Aug/Sept when they are cheap! Then I have all my fabric, I make flannel rag quilts for friends then use the scraps to make blankies for preemies. Have lots of flannel remnants, need to get that in line. Ok, now I am stressing, just need to concentrate on one thing at a time. Today it is the paper work on the floor. Once I can get through that it won't be so bad. Thanks again, Laura

Private vs,. Public School

One of the things that we would love to see changed, would be that ALL children take the SAME standardized tests. As a parent, it makes it very difficult to compare between a public and private school because the students do not take the same test. So you cannot compare whether the students in the private school are actually scoring higher, and getting a better education. IMO, there are some private schools handing out A's because they want the parents happy so that the tuition/donations they are counting on, keep coming in. The parents end up with more power than they should have, because they threaten to pull their kids out, and the school does not want to lose the tuition/donations, so in some cases they "cater" too much to these parents. Many of the public schools have their classroom sizes way down, so you may be surprised at the number of students in a class. Also, public or private, much depends on how good the teacher is. Both private schools and public schools have good and bad teachers. We panicked with our first born and put her in a very elite private school, foolishly worried about the influence of children from the guests on the Jerry Springer show.LOL We then started hearing so many great things about a certain public school, that we decided two years later to just try it for one year. We were so worried that if we gave up our "spot" at the private school, that we would not be able to get her back in. But we took the chance. We never regretted the change, and the public school has been every bit as good as the private school (with the exception of one teacher two years ago, but the rest have been truly excellent teachers). Granted that this is a public school with alot of parental involvement, in a better neighborhood. Our state grades the schools in how well they are doing, and this school was rated an A. If you have really good public schools in your area, take a look at them. Talk to other parents. What are they happy with? What would they change? But find out how their students/school as a whole scored on the standardized tests.

How insightful and compassionate of you to pull her out. I wish I had been pulled out of the horrifying pit that was my high school. Good luck to you.

Hi Scarlet, I don't know much about different cirriculum other than to say a couple schools in our area (christian) have supplemented the aBeca instead of using it entirely. The reason from what I heard is because the kids did very well at early ages, but when they got in high school some of them struggled. It is my understanding that the aBeka is a lot of rote (spelling?) learining. Kids that memorize easily do very well, but when it comes to problem solving the cirriculum is weak. Again, I am no expert, however it is something to look into. The school my son went to stopped using it because of that. That has been a few years so it is possible that they have addressed that and it is no longer a problem.

We home schooled with the support of another woman who gave us direction (it helped me a lot). One thing she required of the kids was community service. I can't say enough good about that. My son was a little on the quiet side too, and he gave time at our museum or science and industry once per week. He gave demonstrations in different areas and not only learned, but he also learned to be more comfortable talking in front of others of all ages. It gave him a lot of confidence as well as helping others.
