Okay...this is pink and terrible, but what do you think?

I have a cooktop that is right next to my oven/microwave, in my current kitchen. I would like to paint a few of the cabinets to give it more of a vintage feel. Long story...

Anyway, all I could find was a pink example (yikes! and I like pink) and this is not a very good 'paint' job...but what do you think? Good, bad, ugly....awful! LOL

Oh I see. You "painted" some cabs to pull it together? Hmmmm I wonder if that would work. I can't tell. I can't get over the pepto pink and birch!

I think you need some paper and masking tape and mock it up for real in your kitchen. (Is that even a thing? Mocking it up for real?)

A blank canvas to play with! What fun! And the wonderful thing about gardening is that if you decide you don't like something or it's not doing well in one spot you can remove or move it very easily (except for major trees). So you can't really make a mistake. It's a very forgiving process AND so rewarding. I recently began my own garden too and was very timid at first, but as my confidence grows and I become more familiar with plants, so does my willingness to make bolder and more interesting choices. Looks like a good plan. Kind of a native wildscape to attract some desirable critters. I like all the bird and butterfly-friendly choices. And just another option that I've found is a favorite of birds is a mulberry tree (which gets to be about the size of a possumhaw (10-15 ft.). Also delicious on icecream and cereal! Also think your choices of very easily maintained xeriscaping is just great! I can't tell whether you are going to place things individually or will create an actual bed with some kind of edge to contain them. Some thoughts/ideas: Consider that Possumhaw is very similar to Yaupon Holly and both provide red/orange berries, with the main difference being that Possumhaw will lose its leaves (but maintain it's berries) over winter whereas the Yaupon would be evergreen. You may have already known that and prefer the Possumhaw, but just thought I'd mention the evergreen option as well. Either way, make sure it isn't shaded out by the larger tree, because they enjoy the sun. Have you considered any tall native grasses as a backdrop for flowers? They soften the hard edges of a yard. Also, another thing that not only attracts but keeps critters around is some kind of water feature. Doesn't have to be as fancy as a fountain (although that sound is divine and birds prefer it to stagnant water), but at least a birdbath in a somewhat shady area. The easiest fountain to maintain is a bubble fountain that overflows its container and then disappears below ground (covered usually with a grate on which sits gravel or river stones to act as a leaf/debris filter) into a reservoir and then recycles back up. Would it be possible to introduce a good sized stone/boulder or two? If you create a bed under a tree you might consider adding some turks cap for the hummers, or introduce some pigeonberry or other shade loving groundcover. If the patio is not shaded then you might also consider creating a place to sit beneath the tree that is cool and inviting or eventually a hammock chair or swing to hang from a branch. Speaking of trees, what considerations played into your choice of Ash? Just curious. Did you want a deciduos or evergreen tree? What size, color, type? Anyway, those are just some things that came to me. Our gardens can be our sanctuary (as well as a critter haven). A little piece of heaven on earth. Thank you all so much! I've been so busy since yesterday, I didn't have the chance to respond. But thank you so much for all the complements. I just love my house and never want to move! I'm glad to hear that most of you like the idea of all-white. However, I'm starting to maybe change my mind on the dark purple wave petunias. I could see how they would blend into the background and not be visible from the street. It's my favorite color. I've never seen petunias in yellow before. I have a feeling that they will not be easy to find in my area. But this is a possibility instead of the purple. It's funny that one of you mentioned ferns. I have done ferns before (one summer), and loved them, and I'm planning on two ferns this summer. The only problem with ferns is that I had a bird build a nest in one. Not something that would bother me, except for the surprise of them flying out as I was walking out my front door. I thought my mail carrier would fall up my front steps when one flew out when he was delivering! So, I'm going to do some shopping around. There aren't too many nurseries around this area with much variety....that's the problem. I'm in the process of two other big projects right now...sanding/staining the steps and my upstairs hallway (so I'll have almost all hardwoods), and painting my LR/stairwell/upstairs hallway in a hot chocolate color (can't remember the name right now - it's from Lowes). Busy time! I also plant a lot in our backyard, which gets mostly sun, so I can do more back there. Thank you all for your opinions! And thank you for the picture of the Blue Pearl impatiens. I'm sorry the owner is in the hospital, but that unfortunate circumstance shouldn't affect your decision on accepting/rejecting countertops that will be in your house for a good long time - 20 years? On the gap behind the sink run: If your planned backsplash tile will cover a 1/4" gap, that is fortunate, but be aware that the industry standard is half that - 1/8". Sink cut-out: just sloppy. When we were looking at stones, we went to a place with "examples" of finished pieces. Every sink cut out in the place (mostly bathroom sinks) was "off." The cut out wandered with respect to the sink edges. This is 3 years later and I still remember that irregularity with a cringe. It wasn't so bad that it's the first thing you noticed, but once having noticed, it was hard to ignore. We crossed that place off our list of possible companies based on those "who cares?" cuts. Cook-top cut out: Their bridging solution may be acceptable in some markets, but doesn't seem to be a first class solution to this common installation issue. The better way to do this is to embed rods in the uncut undersides of the bridge sections rather than cut and paste. I suspect that better fabricators install the rods and then make the cut most, but not all, of the way through the thickness of the stone at the shop, and then finish the cut on site. The issue is breakage in moving the stone. Here is another way of dealing with narrow pieces. The brace was just for moving purposes. (This is a sink cut out, not a cooktop, but the method is the same.) If I were you, I'd be inclined to reject the whole job considering how much it's costing you and how long you'll have to live with it. If he's been doing this for 5 years then he needs to find a new profession. I have done two tile jobs myself. One over 10 years ago and my recent brick backsplash. My cuts look pristine compared to his hack job when cutting the tile horizontal. It looks like he only used snips! I think because it is just under the counter, once you grout/silicone whatever you intend on doing in that joint, then it won't be as noticeable but considering you have to actually pay the guy, I don't think it is acceptable. Curious about the area that he went past the countertop. Do you have a picture of that?

I love the pink kitchen. At first I thought it was yours. Knowing you, I am presuming you have been to Retrorenovation. They now have a user request for ideas to work around the wonderful existing kitchens and baths. And the responses are great. The second stove is a beauty, but could be very expensive to find. One never knows though in coming across one. If you do, I think it would fit taking what is there out.

My daughter had a pink stove in an old Victorian she rented, it was really old and had more options than I've ever seen in a stove. And everything worked. I could never figure out how they ever got it in the farm kitchen without a door existing for it's size. The pink was meant to be in there.

I guess I don't understand what's what, but I sure do love those retro appliances!

I've started to think that since I very seldom cook, what would be the harm in a vintage, totally inefficient stove?

I think Lavender wants to redo the area of her kitchen which currently has built in ovens and a stove next to it. Either paint the existing or find a unique stove to fit in the spot. If the stove shown, she would need to remove the existing cupboards and stove to do so. A vent would be needed allso. There are a lot of retro stoves still working as hard as when they were new. Just takes some time to find one.

I think the idea is to use paint to tie the wall ovens and adjacent cabinet with cooktop together to give the impression of the vintage range.

The idea is clever, but I don't think the pink example is very successful even setting aside the pink color. It doesn't look like an old style range to my eye, instead it looks like someone got tired of painting the cabinets and quit without finishing the job. Maybe there's a way to make it work better, or maybe I'm just all wet.

I am trying to make my appliances look a little more interesting (thanks Homebuilder) and 'suggest' vintage, with paint.

Holly- The fact that you don't like it, makes me want to try it even more :)

No offense....but I want to try something most of the professionals would probably frown upon, just to see if it will work. If not, I can always repaint. LOL

LL, when I saw your photo (photoshop?) I thought of this kitchen redo from Apartment Therapy a while back. They kept the vintage double oven and hood in seafoam green but redid the cabinets via Ikea. The end result looks terrific.

I think the paint thing is trickier to pull off though. If I were going to paint one or two cabinets, I'd be tempted to do the whole kitchen, for consistency's sake. Then again I live in a land of tiny kitchens, so I'm probably underestimating what that would entail.
