Easter bunny came, but don't eat the chocolate coins

I was up early with my young son Sunday morning and he was all excited about the Easter Bunny coming and filling his basket. My wife had picked up some stuff at CVS. I was glancing at the candy and noticed that the foil chocolate coins were Made In China. I have made it a policy not to eat food products made in loosely regulated third world nations. Someone else's greed (USA distributor or Chinese manufacturer) could be my or my families loss. So I kindly explain to him that the coins are only for play and not eating. He asks why, and I say that it is really bad tasting chocolate. He is fine with it and really likes the coins for play anyway.

The number of food products offered for sale in the USA and made in countries with poor food regulations and/or corruption seems to be increasing. It is almost imperative to read the very fine print. I would prefer a big flag printed on the front.

I ate some Chinese marshmallow candy my wife gave me. I spit it out and trashed it. Nasty as hell! I knew something was wrong with the first bite.

Did you take the marshmallows back to the retailer to let them know what you thought of the product that they're selling?

Please just do that!

Plus ... suggest strongly to the manager that s/he sample some ... and see what kind of a response you get.

If s/he refuses ... ask him/her whether s/he looks in the mirror often ... and how does s/he feel about the integrity of a food vendor that won't eat his/her own product??

How would she/he feel about you walking on the street outside the store, wearing a sandwich board saying, "This manager won't eat some of his/her own product".

Good wishes for letting the purveyors of stuff get feedback regarding how well pleased the customers may be with their stuff.

Karen, I'm so sorry for your son! My mother also has problems with one of her eyes and know how your son, you and your family can feel! So I'll pray for him... expecting that someone upon us does something for him. Sometimes, my Dad listens to my prayers :) Regarding your pictures... well, the very first time I bought a mini house, I was on holiday in Canterbury and bought a house box. Each time I went on holiday in England, I bought a new house box. I saw boxes such as the bunny boxes you have and didn't have the opportunity to buy some of them but plan to do when I'll go back in England (with the jet foil not the airplane). Your boxes are splendid, really! Also both your lavender and green dishes are so nice! Your spring wreath is also gorgeous... unfortunately that is the kind of item I can't have in my home: Minute, the dog would make it a mashed wreath in 1 minute (oh yes, it's a jumper dog... half dog and half kangaroo) :-( Well, thanks to you and all of my new friends of this forum, I just converted a friend of mine to holiday decorations, hihihi. So, we'll go shopping for the Spring and Mother's Day within two weeks!!!! By the way, your large rabbit should be gorgeous in her dining room too, lol.

I did make them and they are soooo good and so easy. Tracey yours look great too. I only made half a recipe and divided that in half. Half with only my coconut scented vanilla from Puerto Rico and half with lots of coconut. I did find it a bit soft so I kneaded in more confectioners sugar until it felt right. I used the Bakers chocolate coating cups. The chocolate was a bit thick to work with and I could have thinned it but I was hurting by then and just did the milk chocolate ones on the plain cream ones and a few of the coconut ones. I froze the rest of the uncoated eggs and will coat them in dark chocolate when I'm ready to eat them. Terrapots, I think I'll use the rest of the condensed milk can and make some with orange flavor, since I have that. Didn't have mint after all. Wish I had some raspberry extract though. All in all a great recipe that I will use in the future too Ann. Thanks for sharing again. I did make one big egg with each batch too. The big plain cream egg is smaller than the double coconut one. Here is a pic of the milk chocolate coated ones and you can see the two with coconut inside have coconut outside. They had just come out of the fridge so have a little moisture on them.

Sissy, any of the recipes that I mentioned came from someone specific are posted here somewhere. I have to tell you, though, that the search is impossible. It's easier to just ask for specific recipes and most of us don't mind posting them again. So, here is the recipe for Sol's honey rolls, they are sweet and light and yeasty and the grandkids eat them without anything on them at all, not even butter. Yes, they are that good. Honey Rolls 1 cup milk 1/2 cup honey 1/2 cup butter [1 stick] 2 teaspoos salt 1-2 tablespoons granulated sugar* 2 pkges. dry yeast 1/2 cup warm water [110º-115ºF] 2 large eggs, lightly beaten 6 - 6 1/2 cups AP flour Heat the milk, add butter and salt. Set aside while butter melts. Stir in the honey. In another bowl, combine the warm water, yeast and sugar. Let it sit until yeast is completely dissolved, about 6-7 minutes. Combine milk mixture with yeast mixture. And stir in the beaten eggs. Beat in 4 cups flour. Add enough remaining flour to make a soft, but not sticky dough. Place dough in greased bowl, turning to coat both sides. Cover and allow dough to rise 1 hour. Punch dough down, and allow to rise another hour. Punch down again, and shape dough into rolls. Let it rise again 45 minutes to an hour or until doubled in volume. Preheat your oven to 375ºF and bake rolls for 25 minutes or until a deep golden brown. For a very soft crust, brush rolls with melted butter as soon as they come out of the oven. Note: You could omit the sugar from this recipe altogether. I sometimes use about a teaspoon of the honey called for in the recipe to feed the yeast instead of the sugar. I also have to admit that I don't follow the directions exactly, I put all the wet stuff into my bread machine, add the dry stuff and let it finish on the "dough" setting. Then I roll it out, cut it into rolls and let rise, then bake. I've done it both ways and they both turn out about the same, so choose your technique, they both work! Annie

Thanks all! I am glad that they turned out too. Tami, exactly! As long as it's chocolate, the kids won't care! Linnea, I didn't add anything to the chocolate. Just turned up the heat a bit more. I read it somewhere that chocolate's melting point may vary depends on the type and quality of the chocolate. The Cadbury bunnies I used seemed to have a higher melting point than my chocolate wafers and the Callebaut. I wonder if I should have tempered the chocolate because the result was some very soft chocolate that melts in my hand. Annie, good suggestion. I definitely will use them in baking instead for dipping next time. Linda and Lowspark, you're right. I believe the quality of the chocolate greatly affect the outcome. I am not too crazy about white chocolate unless it's Callebaut. I find most white chocolate too sweet and lack cocoa flavor. Good call dad. There was a recall on some chocolate coins a while back. Yours may or may not have been a part of that.

My kinds know they aren't supposed to eat the candy made in China. I don't knowingly buy it. It's hard to keep it away. At Halloween, I went and read labels in the stores. When we trick or treated, anything that looked like it was from China got thrown out. The kids still go to school and get candy as rewards from the teacher, bus driver, and special events. I find wrappers from that same junk that I've been trying to avoid. My 5 yo dd had an Easter party last week. A well meaning grandmother made party bags and loaded them up with junk from the $ stores. My kids are used to getting the better stuff. Dd took one bite and spit it out because she thought it tasted yucky. I saw other kids eating it. It made me sad. I didn't feel I was in a position to say anything.

Thanks for the link. Wow, this is the same company (Sherwood Brands) selling the Easter chocolate coins in the USA at CVS. They were duped by their "dependable" suppliers once, so what makes me think anything has really changed? Obviously Sherwood Brands is greedy bunch, and their Chinese suppliers also want to get rich quick. This can mean big trouble for consumers when it involves foodstuffs.

I'm glad my son didn't eat the stuff. I'll have to make sure my wife looks more closely at the fine print.

You got that right. Those coins have always been filled with really bad tasting chocolate. As a kid, I never thought anyone ever ate them. Same with those awful Peeps.

Last year I was making up "goody bags" for my DD's birthday party. At the dollar store they had really cool High School Musical gummies that I knew the kids would like. Then I noticed they were made in China. Didn't buy them.

Went to Kroger and they sold the same HS Musical gummy candy! (For more $$ of course).

Can't seem to escape it!

hey I just had to comment on this as well, living in California I have learned to be very wary of candy and other stuff that is being shipped in from Mexico. I read a while back there was "concern" at the amount of mercury content in the candy. But I never heard anything more about it, so now I just make sure we don't buy any candy from the "hispanic" section.

The concern I've heard with Mexican candy was actually lead. We try to avoid that too.

I think Hershey's may have moved some of their plants to Mexico, but I suspect that they since have an image to uphold, lead probably isn't a concern from them.

A few years ago my local dollar store was selling shrink-wrapped (room temperature) Chinese steaks for a buck.I didn't buy any and have never gone back in that store .

The health department distributed a flyer related to the candy from Mexico, it is actually the wrappers of the candy that may contain lead. Darn, I really liked the dry peanut butter candy that had a rose on the wrapper.
