Uh oh, Easter Bunny turned into a ball

OK, I got out all the leftover bunnies, chopped them up, and proceeded to melt them in my double boiler. They began to melt then turned into a ball! :-( I have used the same double boiler to melt milk/white chocolate wafers and Walton's chocolate without problems... What am I going to do with this ball of "chocolate"? Al

Eat it!....You must have gotten some moisture in there....

Linda, I have been watching it very carefully... don't think any moisture got in there. Think this chocolate has a higher melting point. I turned up the heat a bit and stirred with all my might, it started to melt a bit more. But I can't seem to get it to dipping consistency, only a thick, spreadable paste. Some of the chunks still refuse to melt. Maybe Easter bunnies are meant for eating only! LOL Al

Ingrid, sorry if I wasnt clear, Sophy's Rose was Frank's favorite - not sure what Mark Chamblee's favorite Austin is. Frank was a valued and long time employee of Chamblees - he was always there to give advice, propogate and what he didnt know about roses probably wasnt worth knowing. He passed away several years ago [maybe 8-10, I will have to ask his niece Maria when I go on Wednesday] from complications of diabetes. I would always ask him what he thought about this or that rose and he would tell me honestly. I have found his advice about Sophy's Rose right on - I have 2 of them and they are healthy, well shaped and bloom lots. I sure miss Frank - but Maria was his protege and learned so much from him and now with her experience at Chamblees is filling his shoes with great capability. Judith

I think "set it back" is a more accurate description than "reset". I have 2 Sagaes that were bought at the same time, same size. Planted next to each other in a holding bed. Then I decided to overhaul all my gardens, so the holding bed became a multi-year bed. They were huge by the time I was ready to move them. I decided to keep one in it's current location & move the other. I had a massive root ball so I know I got alot of the roots, but most likely severed a few. Now, the plant didn't shrink at all, it looked great that year even though I moved it after it was leafed out (I used Ken's taping method). But 3 years later, you can tell one is smaller than the other. It looks like it is a year behind the other one. After 3 years it has not caught up, but is growing steadily. I think it will probably always look a year behind the other one. I don't care, it's growing like crazy and is huge! If I didn't have the other one to compare to, I would never know it was set back a little. Wendy

OK, big SCORE on the metal branches w/little bird tealights! I am coveting (big time)! And, of course, coming from a chick like you, those "fuzzies" are fantastic little critters in your nest vignettes! HOW CUTE! Love those purple plates you used on that metal plate stand!...& the purple vase of b'day flowers...GORGEOUS! I really like those pale yellow birds on the left side of your bay window under that potted branched tree w/lovely eggs...very pretty. Your family room bookshelf is very lovely w/all the bunny decor & those 2 "hoppin' bunnies" on the mantle are sweet! Like your new wicker eggs in the cloches in Bath, too & very classy BOP pic, ohhhhh my! Hi everybody. Kathy, yes, I want to get my little plants into the ground, but I'll have to wait a while longer---may have killed my squash plant. I need to check on him.lol Gals, I'm in a rather bad mood today! I think it's just too much "togetherness" with my DH. I love the guy, but... I need some time for myself. Know what I mean? I'm going into MY room, which is actually the dining room where I have a computer in an armoire and some of my things in a file cabinet, some books, etc.-----and chill out in MY ROOM---ALL ALONE. Walked this morning, had toast and turkey bacon and some apple butter --yum yum. Okay. I had a real egg. I'm bad. Haven't had lunch yet. McPeg, I love those flavored waters. I've tried doing some of my own flavorings, but they just don't taste as good as the store-bought kind. Peach is my favorite. Take care, all. I've got a ton to do, we haven't decided yet if everyone's coming here for Easter dinner or we're going to a lodge or something. I may vote "lodge." They have a nice buffet dinner and then we usually walk, tour, etc. Lodge, I say. Lodge! PS This year, after seeing the movie "Passion of the Christ" I just don't feel right about doing the Easter bunny thingy ( and I love bunnies and stuff) so I'm thinking about instead doing some cookies in the shape of fish and having a story with each person's gift about the resurrection and how Jesus met with Peter and other deciples along the sea and they ate fish and talked before he ascended to heaven. A celebration without bunnies. I wish there was a separate spring holiday with bunnies and stuff---aside from Easter. Oh, well. Traditions are sometimes hard to break. I'll have to find a low-fat cookie recipe 'cause I know I'll want to eat a few.

Al, I usually chop 'em up and use them in chocolate chip cookies, I've never tried to melt them.

I'm only assuming they have "something" in them to make them hold their molded shapes...

The good news... I finally got it to work, sort of.

The chocolate melted to a very thick consistency, finally. I coated the pretzels with a spoon then shook it like mad to get rid of the clumpy excess. Funny how it took longer to melt the chocolate yet it took a very long time for the chocolate to re-set. After 20 minutes it still looked wet so I put it in the fridge. Now I can pick one up without giving myself chocolate fingers. On the other hand, I did finger print the chocolate. LOL

I made these for little man's class. It's our tradition to give out treats for Easter, Halloween, and Christmas to all the kids in his class. We have printed a label and will wrap them later.

I think the chocolate they make bunnies out of is not the same quality as chocolate you might normally use for this purpose. Glad you got it to work though. Those look really good! The kids are going to love them!!

I know a few people who stick up on bunnies the day after Easter for Christmas candy....especially white Easter bunnies.
Perhaps one brand is better than another?

They look quite nice. Did you end up having to add something to make it dipping consistency? I had my own dipping nightmare a few weeks ago now I'm gun-shy.

If you need to try this again, add a tiny bit of shortening at a time, until you get the consistancy you need.

They still turned out nice, and the kids wont't care!

Tami, exactly! As long as it's chocolate, the kids won't care!

Linnea, I didn't add anything to the chocolate. Just turned up the heat a bit more. I read it somewhere that chocolate's melting point may vary depends on the type and quality of the chocolate. The Cadbury bunnies I used seemed to have a higher melting point than my chocolate wafers and the Callebaut. I wonder if I should have tempered the chocolate because the result was some very soft chocolate that melts in my hand.

Annie, good suggestion. I definitely will use them in baking instead for dipping next time.

Linda and Lowspark, you're right. I believe the quality of the chocolate greatly affect the outcome. I am not too crazy about white chocolate unless it's Callebaut. I find most white chocolate too sweet and lack cocoa flavor.

Speaking of Callebaut, I melted some dark Callebaut to make almond-cranberry bark. They turned out SO good!
