Do cup pulls cause unusual wear on painted cabinets?

My dear hubby is concerned that when cup pulls are installed on the drawers there will be noticeable wear on the painted finish right under the pulls. I would love to hear from those who have this type of handle and if you've experienced anything like this or not. Thanks so much!

With any hardware and a soft paint you will see what antiques people call APPROPRIATE wear at all contact points. It's considered desireable!

You see it a little bit more with small knobs or drop or drop-bail pulls that you need to actually touch the surface of the cabinet to make contact with the pulling surface, less with large stand-out hardware. But even then, eventually the touches add up.

Since most of the fingertip touches are under the cup of the pull, I don't think it's a disaster waiting to happen. The wear is not as much on show as with other hardware styles, particularly on a drawer, which is viewed from the top down.

ok pattyk - I think our tastes and visions are hitting on some weird points...... haha As you know, I just had my cabinets painted white and today the UPS guy delivered my cabinet hardware...... CUP PULLS! :)

I had samples installed on my cabinets a few weeks to see if I liked them first. I noticed more prints left on the door with the knobs than the drawers with the pulls. We were used to regular pulls on everything so it's a bit of a switch to get used to. If you have tried them in a store and liked the feel of them, go for it! I don't think the paint will wear noticeably under them (I hope!)

Thank goodness I'm finally back online!! My local server was down off and on all week, and between that and the Gardenweb problems, I've been going nuts! Thanks for all the responses on my pulls and also the comments about the house. We are in northern Arkansas. As for the pulls, I see the vote seems heavily in favor of #2. That's the one my husband liked, too. Hmmm. In answer to the first couple of comments, I have not actually handled these. I'm planning to order them online, and these pictures are off the website. It is knobsplus.com. BTW, my butcher block countertops were installed yesterday, which was very exciting! They're going to look beautiful once they are oiled and everything. Thanks again! WOW! This is so frustrating. We just had this same issue with the Gilmore pulls from RH... we are renovating our kitchen and have now completely ruined our freshly painted cabinets trying to install the pulls. The screws broke half way through and are stuck in the wood! Now we’re left trying to redesign with the 4” size to fit into our kitchen (we had purchased and tried to install in 3” pull) to hopefully cover the damage and not pay for new cabinets and start from scratch. It’s crazy that they have yet to fix this problem... it’s been almost 10 years!

But at least you can see anything that gets caught in them and clean them immediately b/f a major germ colony is established! It would also be a lot easier to spray w/lysol (if you like, I don't since it aggravates my asthma big time!) as you can easily get in the nooks & crannies w/o having to go into contortions to see underneath them, especially the bottom ones...which would probably have to be taken off to clean! And, trying to get all the PB&J from a cup pull would be just as trying as birdcage! See...it's all a matter of perspective and personal preference! [I wouldn't want to have to clean PB&J from either one! The solid/smooth knobs & bar-type pulls are probably the easiest to keep clean, if that's an issue for you.] Ours have not gotten dusty in the 7 months or so that they've been installed and only once did one get dirty (on the trash pullout), but it easily cleaned right up.

He's surprisingly insistent that we keep what we have. I'm just as surprised that he loves these pulls so much, but it pleases me that he's taking such an interest in the décor for a change! (He's really excited about having a new house. He's never liked older homes, and has not enjoyed living in a 1940s house that has always needed something done to it.) Thank you for these additional considerations. Although I do believe we're determined to go ahead with what we've purchased, I will discuss your thoughts with DH. Y'know ... just in case. ;-)

LOL - we PAID to have our handpainted cainets *distressed* so that the "appropriate wear" that growlery refers to is there. It will happen over time to your cabs, but how quickly I'm not sure. Are you painting them yourself? Should be fairly easy to touch up, no?

katiee511: We certainly seem to be of one mind, aren't we? lol! I'm looking forward to seeing your finished pics, since I think you're farther ahead than I am. I still have two weeks to wait for the granite to be installed. The color I chose was actually called Calledonia Dark, which would explain why my sample was darker than yours. How is everything coming along with your kitchen?

elizpiz: I certainly have no trouble with "appropriate wear" but DH thinks differently. We had the cabinets sprayed, so touch up will be tricky. I only learned about the last coat being brushed trick too late! I think by the time they show wear, he'll be OK with it. :)
