sheets don't fit thick mattress -- help?

Not really a decorating question. I just bought a few sets of sheets for my daughter. They don't fit the mattress well and keep slipping off because it's one of those really thick mattresses. I don't want to give up on the sheets b/c they;re good quality, and they're new. Does anyone know if there's some kind of solution, something you can sew onto them, like elastic straps or something, to make them fit the mattress?

I haven't tried these yet, but I need to! Our sheets barely fit when we got them 2 years ago (in spite of measuring the mattress), and now they've shrunk just enough to constantly pop free of a corner.

You probably could try sewing some straps on but I think the sheets might still ride up. What I did when we bought a new mattress was I bought some cotton fabric and cut the hem/elastic off the sheets and made them longer and then resewed the hem and elastic. But that's probably a lot of trouble to go to since these are new sheets.

I have a really thick Tempurpedic mattress too and I have found that Shabby Chic's target line fits my mattress very well and I really like how the sheets feel. I tried to get some Shabby Chic sheets to fit a regular twin size bed in our house and the sheets were ridicously too big. If her style doesn't go with your room you could get the sheets in plain white. I have also found that with my Tempurpedic mattress I have to use a mattress pad cover or my sheets slide right off the bed after one or two nights. I had heard that you weren't supposed to use a mattress pad cover with these types of mattresses but I still do. I love my mattress though. Good luck.

I'm making notes as to the suggestions of other non-perfumy brands. I'll be going shopping one day this week, depending on the weather, and will check out those stores I haven't looked at yet. Luckily, I don't have an allergy etc., I just detest all those loud smells. (This includes women in church or the movies who must bathe in their perfumes. Can't they smell them?) About the vinegar...do you use it in the wash or just the rinse, and how much in a large size load? Susan, (sueque67), thanks for the offer. If I can't find any, I will let you know. Redcurls, are you saying that BF is perfumed now? If I do find some I will most definitely check it out before I buy it, even if I have to open the box! Sue

We custom ordered some last year from a Wisconsin shop for our son's dorm; I wanted a top sheet and flannel with fitted feet so they would be easy to put on neatly and stay put on the bunk. Just give them the size of the mattress and other specifications. http://bedderbedding.net/

Thanks to all for suggestions. I'm not thrilled with straps and hooks especially when the mattress is very heavy. Tucking in excess won't keep the sheets tight because the mattress is supported by smooth cedar wood slats. No gripping power there. While discussing this with my daughter down the street she chimes in, "I have a 10" fitted sheet from college days, it's an Ikea queen with elastic banded perimeter. Perfect fit! I can bounce a quarter 3" off the surface. That's how tight I want it. :) The quality isn't so great but it will do for now. My wife may duplicate this sheet in a higher thread count cotton. At least I won't be entangled until then.

I have used something called sheet straps for the same problem.

Along the same idea, you could also sew elastic across the corners.

I've tried the sheet straps, the elastic ones, they didn't work for me. Not only did they fly off but they also put a small tear in the material of the sheet when stretched to the limit.

I have the reverse problem.

We have a Tempurpedic mattress, and everything I have found is too deep. I have two very nice reasonably priced cotton sheets from L L Bean with elastic all the way around, and they still creep all around and look baggy on the sides.

Wanna trade???? :>P
