From the sounds of the insect that you described it is not the one doing the damage. That type of insect does not tend to eat plants like the pictures show. I would guess from your region that roses are in pretty steady bloom right now. If that is the case then you may be falling victim to insects that normally bother roses but will go after anything else in bloom at the time. Probably the best course of action is one of two things. You could try a spray insecticide to kill any insects that might be one them but if you do not see the insects this will not work well so I would go for a different spray. What you want to look for is an insecticide pyrethrum as the active ingredient. This is made from chrysanthemums so it can be considered organic if that is a concern of yours. It works on contact and has a linger effect for insects that eat the plant it has been sprayed on for a period of time afterwards. This period will depend on the concentration in the spray. The other course of action you could try is a systemic insecticide that needs to be absorbed into the plant to be effected. In this case the effect is much longer lasting but the results are not as immediate. I cannot identify the insect for you unless you see one eating the plant directly. What you described is probably a pill bug if you want to look it up and see.

I have a good vet, although he doesn't call me to check on Dolly as my former bird vet did.
