Budgeted clad, prefer fiberglass, should I settle for vinyl?
Comments (9)You either have too many windows or you aren't getting good bids on the Marvin Integrity windows. I don't use the Integrity because they don't yet offer a spacer bar between the permanent mullions. Window selection should start with the features you want rather than brands and prices. Will the interior finish be painted white or stained? Do you want permanent mullions... spacers? Any special shapes or sizes? Special glass? Is it on the ocean or a mountain top? What kind of exterior cladding will the house have? Do you want a sloped sill with a drip? (yes you do) So you want a special color on the exterior? So you want a different sash color from the frame? Do you want the interior pre-finished? The answers to these questions will narrow your window options and save you a lot of time. Just give the list to the suppliers and they will tell you if they can meet your needs. The builder should be held responsible for intentionally low-balling the window allowance in his bid. I would tell him to find me some good bids to make up for this unprofessional self-serving practice. I would even explore taking the windows out of his contract if only to give him a hard time....See Morestenciling house numbers onto vinyl siding?
Comments (5)No reason why you couldn't. My first choice would be to use house paint. It's guaranteed to last 15 or so years outside. You can buy a small container or even look for some of the mismatched cans at the paint dept. usually for only a $1 or so per quart. Of course you could also use the Patio Paints which are designed as outdoor paints too. Or you could paint them on a square of wood and attach that to a stake or even one of the small metal flag holders that stick into the ground. Hope your project turns out great. Comments (1)The jump from wood to wood clad is not terrible and will eliminate the painting necessity in the future. Wood to fiberglass is also not a huge one and can look very classy and consistent with the architecture. Wood to vinyl is going to be the most stark and especially considering the brands that HD sells. I think you nee to figure on what you are comfortable with and go from there. There are insulated storm glass windows, however, they are probably as aesthetically morphing as a wood clad window would be if not more....See MoreAll vinyl Softlite or Sunrise vs vinyl clad Anderson 200
Comments (17)Most windows are better than Andersen. They're overpriced garbage living off of their name. I've been installing Softlite windows for over 20 years. I have also installed Marvin, Simonton, Thermal (now out of business), Crestline, Alside and a few other of brand windows. I personally use Alside windows for my business but mainly subcontract for a company that uses Softlite. Softlite would be my second choice out of all of them. Marvin's are probably the best windows of the bunch but definitely not worth the extra cost. Especially if you plan to move in 15 years. New construction type windows are great but can cause a world id issues if not installed 100%correctly. It also adds a major headache and a lot of expense in the future for the new owners or you if you end up staying. If it were me, I would save some cash and have the builders build buck frames and use replacement type windows. Since you're starting with a clean slate you can usually get a better fit and better insulated opening doing it that way....See MoreUser
