Plumbing mistake - am I being unreasonable?

We purchased an expensive 3 way diverter valve which is not installed to use it's full capability. Such as diverting my water from tub spout, to shower, to handheld. It only does the showers. They just want to order a diverter spout with the lame excuse, that's how it is at my house - your guests won't get confused! - DUh...that's not how we wanted it. Am I being unreasonable? To correct the problem they will have to go through the wall in my other bathroom to not wreck their tile job. I hate to do it but it seems a matter of principle. My head is spinning with the minor "mishaps" this company seems to be good for. There are more electrical screw-ups as well. Should I just accept this mistake and ask for a price adjustment or insist they go through the wall? I feel like they are avoiding me, but when you are spending 20K for a bath remodel (a small bath yet) I think I should get pretty close to perfection? I appreciate any thoughts as I am in week four of the remodel and am frustrated and am not sure if it's me...HELP!

Unless you have already discussed a price adjustment, i doubt they would go that route. Regardless, you should get it the way it was intended and how you want it at no xtras to you.The install was a mistake on their part, they should pony up to make the correction on their nickel.

It costs them initially but saves in the long run by not having negative comments from you concerning their reputation by correcting all mistakes and turning out a succesful remodel for you.Reputation is everything and if i were them i would take care of the mistakes pronto!

Get it the way you want it. It will annoy you forever more if you don't.
Incidentally, I did sort of the same thing one valve for the shower and one for the tub. Just make sure you get the spout you want - w/o the diverter. I think the diverters always leak and look ugly to boot. That being said, your US guests will need to be told how it works - but so what?

mybrowneyedgirls, I checked and the tile is from Florida Tile...I'm sorry, I could have sworn the box said American Olean and my husband has cleaned up the garage so I can't find it. Anyway, the name of it is Retro Classic Flair and the color is "Green". It's 3 X 6. Everyone, I called the tile store this morning and it *ain't* over yet. My salesperson ordered the colored (flexible)caulk for the lowest grout line replacement and was surprised to hear that the tile man had never returned my call. She understood that he had. Hmmm. She said his normal practice is to run the tile out to the countertop edge...and I said he didn't do that this time. She says he can certainly redo it, but when I asked about financial obligation, she said she'd need to speak with her boss get back to me. Story continues....I'll get back to you if/when there's a resolution. Again, thank you everyone.

redcurls, I think the water in the machine will be cooler than in the tank because it will lose heat to the cold machine innards. So it's probably a little warmer than your reading in the tank, but that would seem to be very much too low a setting. Here's probably more information than anyone will read. It seems the safe temp is 135 deg or higher. Anti scalding devices (to add cold water to the hot as it leaves the heater) may be needed in homes with children or elderly people. I've worked in sales for 25 years and one of my strengths is negotiating. There are several things you need to always know about yourself and the situation. 1. You need to know your value and the value of the topic being negotiated. 2. You need to know your definition of a successful engagement and get consensus on that definition. 3. You need to respect the other party and project what their response might be relative to your ask. 4. You need to behave in a "professional" manner, which includes engaging the appropriate people first and giving them a chance to respond with a satisfactory solution/product or service/price. 5. Together you determine the steps/price to achieve the agreed-upon definition of success, and/or remediation steps to get back to that definition. 6. Then you decide to move forward or not. When you don't follow these guidelines, then someone will "win more than they should". Usually that's not us women because we've grown up feeling like a b!tch when we try and negotiate. And when we rush to social media or "the CEO", we're not seeing our value and the steps that may indeed get to the solution we want if we give the right person the chance. And we look like a b!tch whether it's warranted or not. You and your contractor agreed to a job where the definition of success was a new window that matched the windows currently on the house (I know how important that is with vintage). You and your contractor agree that this job did not meet that definition of success. Your contractor has agreed that he needs to fix the job to meet the success criteria that your verbal agreement intended. It's really that simple.

Oh dear. Insurance contractor working on a TIGHT budget because that's the type of BID s/he puts through! His low-ball bid won the contract. If my assumption above is correct, you need to call the insurance company and tell them the issues (code violations, not following industry standards, etc). Get them to STOP the work. If the insurance company will NOT stop the work, you go ahead and PAY for a certified tile inspector for the bathroom and a certified wood flooring professional for the wood flooring install. Those TWO documents will cause BIG issues with the insurance company. They become legal documents STATING what went wrong. It would then be up to the GC/insurance company to PAY FOR the PROPER installation of ALL materials (imagine an insurance company deciding NOT to pay out a claim later on because one of their OWN GCs did NOT follow industry/code requirements....yah that's just a legal quagmire you do NOT want to find yourself in). Do your BEST to STOP WORK and have someone else have a look at it. If you have to, get the insurance company's own 'inspector' to come out and investigate their own workers. The wood planks SHOULD HAVE BEEN culled by the INSTALLER. That is INDUSTRY STANDARD. Yes sanding and putty is going to make this look a lot nicer....but the INSTALLER should have known better. And that tells me the GC used a 'guy' and not a PROFESSIONAL flooring installer. The same goes with PROFESSIONAL tile setters. The GC chose the CHEAPEST ROUTE and went with 'hammer swinging guy' who was, just yesterday, the company gopher (the guy who needs to go'fer coffee or go'fer nails or needs to go'fer lunch).

I wouldn't want a second diverter--that's why you SPENT EXTRA (I'm guessing) to get a three-way.

They can deal w/ the consequences of their mistake.

Maybe this will teach them to read the directions, follow them, check the functioning of the pieces thoroughly before they seal them in the wall, etc.

Think of it as though they were a teenager: "come back in here and pick up your jacket off the living room floor"

It would be easier to pick it up yourself, right? But then your kid will never learn to pick up his own stuff.

He won't hang his jacket on the hook until he figures out that it would be easier to do it right in the first place.

On,a nd the next time they say, "that's how it is at my house," say:

"This is MY house, and it is MY money." And then simply walk away.

If the other side of the wall is drywall, cutting out a section to access the plumbing is not difficult and an expert can patch it for ultimate invisibility. Get it like you want it-all of it!
