Pretty kitchen. How about just a little glass? Our granite is "patterned" sort of like yours (Dakota Mahogany) and our cabinets are cherry. We used natural stone tile for the backsplash. Placed 4" squares regularly on the bottom row, topped that with 2 rows of 1x2" black glass, and finished with the 4" squares placed on the diagonal. Of course, it's your kitchen and you'll ultimately choose what feels right and looks right for you. I think maybe a little blue will go a long way and won't limit your choices in the future quite as much as a complete blue backsplash. Good luck!

Our styles are different, but I'm having one made of back-painted glass installed next week. It's not an option for every set-up (heat from the stove top, avoiding risky seam placement, experienced installer, etc.) I thought I'd mention it if you were looking to go a little outside the tile box.

For me, design and function are equally important. I currently have a steel backsplash and didn't want to loose the clean line or compete with other materials/textures. The glass will do the trick while being easier to maintain and reflecting more light.

Since it's a permanent fixture in the room, I would stay neutral and avoid using any one taste specific color in the design as much as possible. Even if resale isn't a consideration, our own tastes and styles change often enough that using a single color like blue or red in such a permanent way can be problematic and costly to change. Since your cabinets and granite lean towards a more traditional style, I too would look at using a stone like travertine, limestone or something without a lot of movement or color in it as the primary tile and then use pieces of the glass mosaic to embellish it. If you do a google search for "backsplash pictures" you'll get lots of inspiration photos. I like 4x4's on a diagonal and think that would be really pretty in your space. There is also a kitchen picture gallery that has hundreds of pictures of backsplashes posted by the people in the kitchen forum, I can't for the life of me find the link to it now...maybe someone else will have it though and post it.

A simple cream subway would look great IMO!

I hadn't considered subway tiles or travertine, but the more I'm looking @ them online, the more they seem to make sense given our granite. Hubby thinks they're a little boring, but I'd rather that than something chaotic. W/ my 3y/o and 1y/o, my kitchen's always busy!
I'm still a big fan of glass tiles though. Something probably solid colored? The Tile Shop has lots to choose from and they're great about bringing samples home... The search continues... Please post any pics and links if u have ideas. Thanks!!!

I would go the cream colored subway route, travertine is kinda spendy and might compete too much with your granite. Glass could work if you use a larger format tile, smaller tiles would be a lot going on visually with the granite.

I think this smaller scale subway with a bevel with add a little sparkle. It's creamy and will not compete with the granite. Cute kitchen!

I agree about using a creamy subway. But I also think it needs a touch of color too. In my kitchen I used white subway with red diamond inserts. But then again, I know I'll always have red accessories.

I also have scroll tile and it does add a "pop" to the room.

A copper colored insert would be beautiful with your cabs and granite. It doesn't have to be diamond shape either.

We just installed a glass mosaic tile backsplash in our kitchen and we're thrilled with how it turned out.

We got the tiles online, from Cooltiles.com, which is a huge site with a zillion choices. I love their search engine, which allows you to search by material AND color, and then you can zoom in on the tiles. You can order samples too.

The canyon is dark but may work. It picks up the dark flecks in your stone and lends a contemporary vibe. On my screen the dune just looks very moss green and doesn't compliment what you already have. Of course, it may just be my screen.

I find them dark for your kitchen.

The examples shown on your "the tile shop where we're shopping" link....Do you know if the stone tiles shown are even grouted? They butt up to each other and look to me like one couldn't grout. I actually like this option and the look of their samples. The other samples show white where grout would be.

I am thinking your problem was the blue..in another color scheme more in the warm tones of what you have, you might like the class tile after all. A few blue pieces as pops of color and an entire back splash are two very different things.
I would go for the creams, as suggested.

Your kitchen layout is similar to mine, where you don't really have any dramatic undercab space to highlight. In addition, you have a 4" backsplash which takes away additional space.Our cabs are similar in color, as is our granite. Here's a picture of what I did...I found that the price for travertine was not expensive, so I indulged with some glass tile.

One of the reasons for having the accent so high up was to avoid the outlets and switches. I enjoy the view each and every day.
