Help ASAP binding using double fold bias tape!

I made a baby quilt for my cousin 2 years ago and thought I had it figured out by the 4th corner, but now I'm trying to make 2 more quilts for Xmas presents (to be mailed!) and I can't remember how to fold the mitred corners. All the videos I found seem to either use single fold binding (that they call double but it's not) or encase the edge and then sew right through. I *know* there's a way to sew down the first fold (opened all the way up) to the top of the quilt, turn the corner, and then be able to turn it so the middle fold (of the 3 folds in a double bias) is on the edge, turn the last fold under and hand-stitch to the underside of the quilt!

Anybody have any links showing what I'm describing? THANKS!!

Thanks, but I'm looking for a way to use continuous binding right out of the package (since I've already got 1 side stitched down), not cutting it and joining them in perpendicular strips.

Maybe my cousin can dig out the quilt I made 2 years ago...

I've done both. If (and that's a huge if, LOL) I were making a wall hanging or art piece, I would go ahead and make straight grain binding. There's no stress on the binding on such a quilt. I often do straight grain binding for Quilts of Valor, too, because the recipients I've heard from mostly display the quilts rather than use them. That said, most quilts I make are meant to be used on a bed, or dragged around by a toddler, and to be laundered. Bias binding is much more durable, with an obvious reason. The fabric threads criss-cross over the folded edge, rather than run the length of the binding. If a thread in the fabric breaks, it's no big deal. If a straight grain binding wears, and threads begin to break, the binding splits along the fold.

Hi...read with interest your tutorial on bias binding. Somewhere I read one on how to get 5 yds of bias binding out of one fat quarter. Will have to look it up. It involved folding, sewing, and marking the fat quarter. Since you mentioned finding tutorials on the internet, one of the best places I find for tutorial links is Tipnut.com She seems to have links to any and everything imaginable. I get her daily email and am always surprised by what I find quite by accident. I also found that going to her links, will link you to others, which link to still others....so you can waste...er..I mean spend lots of valuable time "surfing the web". LOL And you find stuff about sewing, quilting, cooking, home dec, pets, kids, beauty, etc. If you sign up for the daily email, you DO NOT get a lot of spam, other email etc. I believe she does keep your email address private. At least I didn't and really enjoy getting that email..Never know what will be listed. I even found a link on how to make roman shades out of old mini blinds! That was great!!! It came prefolded (it is double fold). But since I didn't want my cupcakes showing through, I am sloooooooooowly refolding it. You know the "second" folds (not the one fold in the center, but the 2 folds on opposite sides)? Well, because those folds don't meet at the center fold, when you look at the tape, about half of it is 2 layers thickper side (the part with the second fold). But near the single center fold (where the edge of the fabric is), there is only one layer of tape per side. Does that make sense? So, when the tape is applied, if you are looking at the right side, you would see about 1/4 inch of nice thick white binding, but the last 1/4" toward the edge of the fabric is thinner (since it doesn't have the extra fold), so the cupcakes show. Clear as mud? How about this: Imagine you are looking at the right side, and the tape is on. Moving from left to right, with the stitches holding the tape to the fabric on the left, and the encased fabric edge on the right, it looks like this: (W=white tape that is 2 layers thick and can't be seen through; C=cupcakes showing through the single layer of white tape) [factory double fold] WWWWCCCC [factory single fold down center of tape] So I'm redoing the factory double fold so that it scoots all the way to the edge, and hides the cupcakes. Still clear as mud? :-) So, I am refolding it so that one of the flaps (the one that already starts a bit wider) folds all the way to the center crease. That way, the final result on the right side of the fabric, is a nice thick white edge. *Sigh* But this is the kind of thing that i making this project take waaaaaaay longer than it should. On the other hand, I can't see another solution, unless they make an opaque white bias tape. I guess this is just one of those little details that really matters to me--I don't want half of my tape to be see-through. It doesn't look right. francy

Thanks, but that's not it either. You start off by stitching along the first crease, right sides and raw edges together, but I just don't remember how to fold the corner for the mitre. Do you fold the tape on the top of the quilt and do the "fold up, fold down" method to form that pinch? I tried that, and ended up with the wrong edge on the 2nd edge of the blanket. But keeping the tape unfolded on the top of the quilt while trying to fold the corner this way ends up with a big mess. I'm using 2" satin blanket binding that I ironed 2 extra creases in to form a double fold tape, for 1/2" finished binding. I didn't leave 1 edge wider than the other, just folded both raw edge in to meet in the inside crease, maybe I should have left 1 wider but I didn't.

It's driving me crazy that I've done this before and can't remember how, can't find the instructions I used then.

My thoughts would be that you fold the top part of the strip down and make the mither on the front and then repeat the process on the back part of the strip. I would then tack the corner of the miters.
Does any of this make sence??

I think I've got it - I hope I've got it, since I sewed down all but the tail ends. Going to join those up tomorrow and then fold the binding over to the back, I'll take pix of the process. Wish me luck!

I still haven't seen what I was looking for, but thanks for the links anyway. I've got a true double fold binding, but b/c of the way it's folded, I've only got 1 thickness of satin o the edge. May not be too durable but this way I can hide the stitching on the top by folding the tape over. I may do the next blanket (not sure if I'm quilting either of these - girl blanket for CA baby, boy for NC) just using the satin binding as it comes , raw edges to the outside, then press when I fold over so there are 2 thickness of satin there. Will be easier to mitre too.
