Tree advice needed

I couldn't find an appropriate garden forum for this question and I thought that someone here might be able to help.

Hubby and I are looking at houses and this one really strikes our fancy. We love the giant live oak in front of the house but are not so crazy about the huge limbs directly over the roof. We would definitely have a tree guy come take a look before we made an offer. Are we crazy to even consider the house? At the minimum, I think the tree will be an insurance issue, especially since the house is not too far from the ocean. Any advice or observations will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If we do buy the house, I'm sure I'll need some decorating advice ...

I might cut off that one branch that is really close to the roof. I would also make sure your house is covered for acts of God, like lightning. Also have a tree specialist come out and check out the tree for stability and health.

Oh God! It can be frustrating to read people giving advice based on books they've read. There has been so much bad advice given on pruning over the years it is boggling to the mind and a lot of it is published and written by pedigreed specialists. Fortunately things are getting better in the information coming from places like Cornell if you search for advice for commercial growers- the stuff for the home grower tends to be quite uneven. Different cherries have different growth habits and cherries are amongst the most difficult trees to prune to the most productive shape. I struggle to achieve good productivity from a reasonably compact tree but at least the first years don't have to be complicated. It is most likely that your tree will become an open center tree even if you try to maintain it as a central leader, but if you train it originally as a central leader for the first 2 years using the ratio formula I've suggested you will have a leg up producing a productive and compact tree. If you want an open center from the get-go, just plan to cut the central leader to a scaffold after 2 years. Cherry trees usually only need 3 scaffolds to harvest the full 360 of available light. The real goal of pruning any fruit tree in my opinion is to produce a tree with the maximum amount of well lighted fruiting (small) wood and the least amount of structural (large) wood. Basically harvesting the most light with the least "infrastructure".

Well for apples and pears which are pretty foolproof to graft, a lot of people bench graft. Eg. graft directly to the rootstock prior to grafting. I have no experience nor have done any research for peaches, apricots, ect. I have heard that they are more difficult. I know for large volume grafting the nurseries usually bud graft because their scions then go a lot farther as a scion with 3-4 buds can be grafted to 4 rootstocks instead of just 1 as as a cleft graft. It is also faster for multi-grafting as you place all 3-4-5 buds on the same rootstock at the same time. I think they usually do 4-5-6 buds with expectation that 1-2 will fail but they still end up with a 3-4 variety tree.

When I planted my trees out side I shade it from any sunlight from the south or overhead for about a 2 weeks. I used a 4 foot by 6 foot sheet of plywood held vertical just south of the tree. That was enough. The tree got plenty of sun from he east and west. 6b Steve

Fiddle leaf fig tree pruning advice needed

Just got my fiddle two months ago and I've been reading up on this a lot. You can notch your fiddle to encourage branch growth lower down the trunk and you can also pinch the top part off (the green part not the woody part) and that apparently encourages it to branch in two at the top. The home is beautiful. Can you take down the tree to decease your risk? Maybe sell the tree to an artist or woodworker? Or, have the seller take it out before you buy the home, then plant some trees further out from the home?

Is it in a hurricane area? If so then I'd be concerned. We get high winds during Tstorms, and we also get bad ice storms that breaks tree limbs, but our Oaks never sustain damage.

What a charming house!

Are the branches hanging over bedroom areas in the house? If so, I think I'd be forever worried that a branch would crash through the house and kill someone as they slept!

One other thing to consider is - and this is gross - rats invading your home via the tree branches. Before we lived in our home, there was a large tree close to the house and its branches extended over the roof. Since we cleaned several hundred rat carcasses out of the attic after we moved in - again, gross - obviously the previous owners had a major issue with roof rats and I'm sure the tree branches likely gave them easy access to the house.

We now have a large canary date palm in the back yard and it's branches are just high enough to brush the roof. Just the other night we heard some rustling in the tree and out scurried a mouse or rat, which we're sure is nesting in the tree! We've now screened all the vents on the roof to discourage rodents getting into the attic, but all the same we'll probably trim the branches and set some traps outside.

So, my vote is don't cut down the tree if you can avoid it and the roots aren't so close to the house that they're a risk to the driveway or plumbing (we had to cut down a 70 ft tall ficus and some beautiful pines because they were planted so close to the house 40 years ago and the roots were breaking through concrete), but do consult an arborist about cutting off the branches hanging over the house.
