Need Help - Interior Door Wood Selection

Bids from the GC on interior doors have come in quite pricy on both Alder and Cherry. Oak doors are in the bid but was not really looking for something with all that grain. The GC says you can stain darker and that they look good, I'm waiting for a picture. He also is getting a quote on fir doors. Does anyone have any pictures to share on darker oak stained doors or fir interior doors? Maybe we should just switch to white doors but I really like the look of a stained door with white trim. Help!

You can get Oak doors with less grain, it depends on the type of Oak. We had Oak doors in our last house, and I loved them, sorry, but I forget what kind we had,(maybe 'Red Oak'?) definitely not a lot of grain. Though I wasn't really happy with the colour the GC had us stain them. We did the work ourselves, but we were young and too easily influenced, and went with his recommendation instead of our own gut feeling. We were trying to get them to match our prefinished oak floor, and they ended up way too orangey. But we were 'house poor', and couldn't afford to redo them. Moral of the story- go with what YOU want, not necessarily what the GC suggests.

Jotul and Vermont Castings come immeadiately to mind. Jotul has more contemporary styling but is still traditional. Soapstone stoves can be gotten with red enamel also. But the VC and Soapstone stoves are "cat" stoves and personally I don't like that older technology in a stove. My suggestion would to look at the Jotul stoves. Top quality stoves. www.jotul.com But if you want to PAINT your stove you can look into a steel stove. I painted my Avalon stove a different color when I got it many years ago and only had to touch it up every couple of years. They do make stove paint in many colors. When I built my current home I got a Regency stove. I like it just as it is with the gold door and hinges. But look at their website. Maybe they have their stoves in colors too. www.regency-fire.com

Update! We’ve received our knob and door hardware and the lockset for our new entry door. I went with the Baldwin matte black too for interior knobs. For the entry I got the Stainless Santa Cruze lockset. I also took the shutters down yesterday! I can’t wait for our exterior doors to arrive. Those brick beds are crumbling more every day. I can’t wait for it to cool down so I can work on getting those out. New storm windows are next. Things are coming together.
