Are these the right curtains? What am I doing wrong?

My husband and I purchased tab top curtains for our bedroom, but because we hung the middle rod brace off-center, the curtains seemed lop sided. I thought we could solve this problem by covering the rod. So, today, I bought sheer curtains and a scarf to hang. We've been hanging the scarf for the last hour but can't seem to get it right. What am I doing wrong?

Because I've spent upwards of $100 on curtains lately, I'd rather not have to purchase new ones. How can I work with what I have? Or make adjustments with minor purchases (ex. $20 or less)?

Maybe it is just my personal aversion to the whole scarf thing, but I would bite the bullet and fix the rod and go back to the tab tops. Or paint the middle rod brace with some wall paint.

But to answer your question: I believe the scarf is not meant to go to the floor; it should stop somewhere short of the floor, around mid-window. But I could be wrong.

Here are photos of the tab top curtains. I just took down the sheer ones - I didn't really like them either. Looks like I'll be going to Target tomorrow to return them.

Another issue is that there is water damage at the top of our window that I am trying to cover. I live in an apartment and called maintenance two weeks ago to fix it - they were supposed to fix it by the end of this week but never showed. I can't fix it myself; I don't know what brand or color paint the landlord uses. What about a valence? And do double rod conversion kits exist? I've been searching, but can't find any.

If it ain't broke don't fix it. Few people are using spot lights so what we say for lights doesn't necessarily apply to you, and nearness to windows, walls, and even the color of your furniture and carpet make a difference.

Sometimes you can get those feeder folks classified as "nuisance" causing. I recall some cases in newspapers, where the neighbors complained of the droppings, constant noise, health related, caused by the feeders drawing in quantities of birds. Feeding grains or food, also drew in vermin, rats, opossum, coons, to eat it. BLECKKK Not sure if a line of orange snow fence would keep the geese out of your yard with the droppings. Geese can be quite nasty, especially where food is involved. They don't die if not fed in winter cold, they migrate some other place. Staying congregated, they do raise chance of getting diseased. Kind of like the present law against deer baiting. Baiting is not being allowed to prevent spread of disease on the feed. If DNR finds bait piles, you can get a fine and ticketed. Bait piles spread TB, perhaps other things. Animals and birds never congregated in such quantities until people "felt sorry for them" and started the feeding programs. Now the birds are lazy, won't go seek the food on their own. Good luck to you, keep after the officials.

Unfortunately, I used up all the dark one before opening the light one, and I have more cans I need to buy. The lighter one seemed to be older, with some stuff congealed at the bottom--but not like it was terribly old or lumpy. I called the varathane 800# and the guy was not helpful. I'm wondering if its possible to add tint or stain to the light finish somehow to get that dark maple syrup color? If so, what product to use? I do think the browner tone does result in subtly different effect-- reminds me of the waterlox tung finish which I used on another project, a richer color. Sometimes I've used polyurethane and it'll have more of a yucky too-yellow kind of look. Jon, good luck w/ your project. Mine actually looks very nice now that I got it right!

I am not sure, but I think if you pulled down the middle part of the scarf- the swag part- and let it drape more. I think it should hang down more and cover more of the window molding.

I love that the cat matches the decor. Now that's decorating!! Forget the curtains, you have that beautiful cat to look at. LOL

I think everyone just about covered any comments I would have had about the curtains. Only one other thing and that is, the blinds being white. I think black or even wood color would look a bit better. However, you weren't asking about that, so ignore me if that's not in the budget.

I like the tab tops much better than the scarf. I would move the bracket, it should be EASY to do and fill the holes with a light weight spackle. You will never know they were there.

Move the center bracket, as suggested. It is not a big deal, and the small holes can be spackled and painted with some craft paint if needed.

Also, don't forget to hang the last tab of the curtains on each side so that they are on the outside of the end brackets. Your panels will hang better and the brackets will probably disappear.

Scarfs always look so effortless, but they really take time and skill to get them to look right. Double sided tape and pins help.
I think either the tab tops or the scarf is fine. If you stay with the tab tops I would like to see a longer rod, so that the tab tops don't cover so much of the window.

Are these the right curtains? What am I doing wrong?
