When do you stain kitchen floors - before granite or after...
Comments (9)We had the oak flooring installed first (unfinished) and it was covered with a cardboard product (Ram Board) throughout the rest of the process. The cabinets, granite and appliances have been installed and all of the painting has been done. The GC has protected the cabinets after installation with panels of 1/2 foam, taped with painters tape and the panels have been removed only when work needs to be done on the cabinets (installation of appliance and knobs). The floor is now being stained and finished. There was no sign of damage to the unfinished floors. The cardboard, though, really took a beating and I'm glad that the floors were protected during construction....See MoreFloating the Floor before or after Cabinets???
Comments (7)Tina - given the expressed concerns about the condition of your floor and cracking, you may want to talk to your GC and/or Tile Guy about the deflection (the amount of bend/give) of your floor. If it has had wood and vinyl tile on it, it may not be able to support tile. To know this, you would need to know the type, size and spacing of your floor joists as well as the longest unsupported span. You'll also need to know the type and thickness of your subfloor. Floating will not help with deflection. The only things that would help are improving your joists and your subfloor. I went through this with our floor, unfortunately when it was too late to do the reconstruction needed. For me it worked out well, though, as we are winding up where I really wanted to be - with hardwood floors throughout our home. Here is a link that might be useful: Here's one calculator...See MoreKitchen remodel- tile floor before/after countertops?
Comments (5)Strangely I don't remember exactly(after just several months lol), I think cabinets were first, then floor, then countertops..backsplash obviously was done last. But we had to do the kitchen from scratch, so maybe irrelevant. What's important though-they cover the floors with some special very thick and very heavy paper, and tape it in the corners, so it doesn't move at all. Our floors are wood, so the GC was very protective about them. I don't know if he'd do it in case of tile. Or maybe he'd choose some other covering. If your GC hasn't suggested it, ask him whether there is an option to cover the floors. And what this option is....See MoreKitchen Before and After - Crystal Cabinets and Mirage Floors
Comments (55)Jack Hohn, I can't comment on the Mirage floor finish, because we wound up getting another brand. However, we were looking at semi-gloss vs. matte (similar to cashmere) in a natural rift and quartersawn white oak floor, and we absolutely love the matte finish. It looks so soft and beautiful, and shows dirt and dust much less than our old floor which had a glossier finish. In the end, it's a personal preference, but I just wanted to put in my 2 cents in praise of a more matte finish. Good luck with your decision!...See Morewdatampa
