Our son is 15 and this is what he wanted when we remodeled the basement. It was halfway finished and it was his room for a couple years. Last year we decided to make a bit more suitable for a teenager. The finished pictures are towards the end of album.

What colors does he like? What is the furniture and flooring that will be in the space? Not every room has to be themed,and at 16 he is really past that. He will only be home a couple of years more, and then off on his own to school or work.

Why not paint the walls a color he likes, get bedding that picks up that color and another one for an accent? Put posters on the wall of his choosing, a space for his computer, and call it a day?

Before or after he does his five loads of wash?

Trust me, no one wants to see photos of my 17 year old's room. Several years ago, we added a bedroom in our attic. I am so happy it's his room, because I rarely have to walk past it. Anyway, his room is pretty basic with a bed, bureau, bookcase, and desk. Because it's an attic space, most of the walls are slanted and not really large enough for much artwork, but because he's into movies, I bought him a couple of movie posters and hung them on the walls where he does have space. Recently, I bought him some very funky Blik wall decals and he's going to put them up himself. You might take a look at some of the wall decals out there -- your son could choose his own and customize his room a bit, and yet they're easy to remove later if/when he moves out.

DS's room is a total mess and so I won't post pictures, but we redid his room the fall of his freshman year in HS. He picked out the colors and we both had a good time painting a focal wall with Ralph Lauren denim pattern- it required painting two layers of paint with the first layer being a light blue and the top layer being an indigo blue and then going over the top layer when it was still wet with a wire brush to simulate a worn peice of denim. And it reallly does look like denim panels on the wall- perfect for a teenager's room.

The other walls are white and the trim and bookshelves are indigo. Rug is blue.

On one wall we had a shelf cut and fabricated at HD to use as a desk and covered with a blue patterned laminate and above it shelving for books. One wall is all built ins with dresser and shelves and at the present time is crammed with books and his sketch pads.Stuff on wall are his photos (several courses in photography in HS) and his own art. Bedside table with iPod speakers, guitar on wall.....

I would keep it simple, paint a color on the walls and stick on a golf wall decal (look on eBay). My son has a computer chair with a leather soccer ball seat. You could find a golf-themed chair - or even one of those portable golf seats. Keep it plain and his room will look neater, and when he moves out you can easily redecorate. The wall decals peel right off.

Well I now longer have a teen son so no pictures to share, but I have two males that love golf. If he has a dream course he'd like to play I'm sure you could find posters of it on art.com or another site like that, if not somewhere around your own city.
If he has a favorite play either from the past or present you might even find prints of them playing that course.
My family always got a kick out of Payne Stewart. He not only dressed in a way to stand out, but his personality was stand out also. He was an awesome man and golfer. A room with Payne in mind could have an argyle border or even wainscott height wallpaper. More of the traditional style of golf.
Then there's always Scotland as an influence to a golfers room. That's where golf as we know it originated. You could probably find some nice tapestry fabric with this theme in mind.

Ask your son what color he wants. Then you pick the right 'shade' to match the trim and carpeting (if any). Then pick out some plain bedding or something simple like plaid or stripes. Add shelving if necessary, or anything else that is practical for a teen's bedroom.

In no time at all a teen will personalize the space with things they love; pictures, posters, trophies, models or whatever teens are into these days.

Most likely only he and his friends will ever view the room so a "theme" done by Mom is not necessary and most likely will not be appreciated.

Before I show you my sons past and current bedrooms (one when he was a teen, and his new room that he really had nothing to do with because he left for college a few days before we moved into the house) I wanted to give you an idea. Go to an antiques/junk store and look for old golf clubs to decorate with.

This golf club belonged to a family member and I have it mounted over a print the 18th hole of our local country club. You can find prints of other golf clubs (as suggested before). Augusta National comes to mind.

OK, here is my sons room from the old house. He was age 14-18 in that house. He also wasn't a sport fan, but did collect ship paraphernalia (flags, cruise ship models, paddles) and Texaco trucks and planes. He also wanted to be an architect, so I mounted our house plans on his wall. He really just had a mixed bag of stuff he liked.

I just used a few of his items in the current bedroom. My son took the flags to college. The walls were so plain that I added very simple B&W photos of him along with friends and family. I was trying to pull the green color from his bathroom into the bedroom.

We still have the ships, trucks and planes, but didn't display them all.

The blueprints and ship posters remained.

As did the paddles.

My first thought reading your subject was "ARE YOU KIDDING?!". Glad to see I'm not the only one with a really messy teen son. My son's room is done in a Red Sox theme..posters, pennants,hats, etc. But I think what most people notice when they go in is the mess (thankfully it's just his friends going in there). Good luck!

No! It was crazy, messy, totally NOT decorated . . . and very beloved by DS, just as it should have been. It was his place and his idea of perfection . . . although so NOT mine!
But, after he'd headed back to college for his junior year and had an apartment there that I could send his big, framed "Scarface" poster to, the things he bought while on Spring Break in Europe, his mounted jackalope head (shudder!) and his huge Bob Marley flag, I decided that I should finally redo his room a bit, so that it could act as a guest room for the 9 months a year when he was away at his college apartment. Those pics I can show you, although he was technically 21 by this time ;^P.

For a teen guy, though, I vote for letting him pick & choose what he likes, as long as the walls aren't black (those are so hard to paint over!). Why? Because if he's a typical guy, it'll NEVER, NEVER (trust me on this one) be decent enough for you to show to your friends . . . or even keep the door open! That is, unless you hogtie him and clean it yourself over his screams of protest. For me, though, it just wasn't worth it ;^D

That's what I have done. Sons current room is his about 4 weekends out of the year, a guest room about 2-4 weekends, and it sits empty the rest of the year. :(

My daughters' rooms also double as guest rooms - one daughter has moved out and the other gets married in September, so they will both technically be guest rooms.
