Price check on foundation estimate. Am I crazy?

Hey there, first time poster, great message board!

I'm getting close to starting a remodel with 2 additions with a GC that I REALLY like. At this point I only have his initial ballpark estimate with a much tighter one coming next week after my structural engineer gets us a "real drawing" of the plans. The ballpark estimate is broken down very well and all the numbers seem reasonable for the info provided EXCEPT foundation costs.

Can anyone here explain a $35-40 sq. ft. estimate on a reinforced monolith foundation for a single-story brick veneer addition on a flat lot in central Texas? That would bring my foundation costs to about $22,000 for about 600 sq. ft.

I'm certainly going to discuss this with him and will insist on a number of bids before work begins but was just doing research before we get to that point.

Thoughts? Am I crazy for thinking that's high?
