math question

Disclaimer: My brain is not working well tonight.

What size square should I start with if I want to be able to cut it diagonally, and then sew it to a different square (same size as original square) cut diagonally to equal a 6 ½ inch square?

Is it as simple as 6 ¾?

Perhaps better yet, what size squares should I start with if I want to put them together, draw a line from one corner diagonally to the other corner, then sew a ¼ inch seam on either side of my line, then cut them apart and end up with two 6 ½ inch squares?

Thanks,

Lola
