Roofing Shingles: Costs for Cool Roof / Energy Star
Comments (2)#2 Dimensionals are as easy, or imo, easier than 3-tab shingles concerning installation so labor costs are typically the same, or should be. You might consider cooling down your attic from the inside with the use of radiant barrier, or insulation techniques assuming you have attic space. For vaulted/cathedral ceiling areas, that would be a little more involved unless you have those areas opened up on the inside,(ceiling materials removed)....See MoreHelp with selecting Shingles for Roof Please
Comments (23)Having just gone through this process, I can say that, while a roofer may make a suggestion, it's really up to you to decide. Drive around and look at houses. Black roofs in my area are passe (we've been there, done that on our house too...25 years ago!). Here's a chart based on region: http://www.mclean-roofing.com/PDFfiles/LandmarkColorChart.pdf You can't go wrong with Certainteed Landmark architectual singles. They are all beautiful. We love ours! What you need to keep in mind are: region, weather, contrast and style of your house. Personally I would not defer to the roofer. I think the Moire Black, while lovely, is not right for your house. Perhaps something softer would be more appropriate (others have made good suggestions), given your future plans to change the landscaping and the lighting. If your future plans include changing out the front door, I'd suggest beefing it up w/ one that has side panels of glass. That would be more in keeping w/ the sytle of your house. Also, if you are working on curb appeal, there are ways to diminish the stark look of garage doors that face the front of the house. Re: metal roof. IMHO, don't go there unless you live in a frigid climate like Norhtern New England. My grandparents had that on their house in North Conway, NH. The advantage: the snow literally slides right off. The disadvanate: it's rather ugly (beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right?)...See MoreRoof Shingles Discontinued! --certainteed independence shingles.
Comments (7)We are looking for a replacement for CertainTeed Independence Driftwood too, what did you end up using? My daughter's roof in Louisiana was destroyed in Hurricane Laura...literally "Gone with the Wind"! We have not found a replacement yet and need to make a decision immediately because Hurricane season is upon us again! Thanks in advance....See MoreSelecting vinyl siding and shingle roof color
Comments (13)My house has white vinyl siding, and it requires constant maintenance in terms of cleaning. We live in the country (we're farmers), and the white shows everything - especially cobwebs, dead (and live!) insects, and dust from the road and surrounding fields. It is especially bad around my entrances and windows (probably because that's where I see it close up). We power wash the house in the spring and fall, and I constantly clean my entrances by hand so that it looks respectable. The house we are building will have darker wood siding and a grey metal roof. I have no doubt that the darker siding will also get dirty, however I think it probably won't show up as much as it does on the white siding....See More- 15 years ago
