Interesting fork observation at dinner last night...

Had a birthday party for a neighbor who had been in the antique business for 50 plus years.

We were using my grandmother's sterling (International Joan of Arc pattern).

Someone noted how nicely the fork pierced the food. And how long the tines were.

My antiques friend commented: Forks used to have tines that ended in sharp points, but nowadays forks ends are squared off (blunt).

So I went to my everyday flatware, and sure enough, the fork tines are blunt. I guess the silverware industry has to protect us from piercing our tongues when we eat!!!

The other observation on the length of the tines, was that my grandmother had the "dinner" size pattern, which has longer forks and knives. There is another size called "luncheon" which is a tad smaller. Who knew???
