Do you know of a cast iron farmhouse sink for under $600?

Hi,

I'm looking for a white, cast iron apron front sink. I didn't realize the Kohler was so pricey.

Does anyone know of another brand that's less expensive?

As far as white farmhouse sinks, are fireclay and cast iron my only 2 options?

I don't have this sink myself, but I have been reading about it on this forum for years - the Ikea Domsjo sink, an amazing buy at $186.

Just remember that the cast iron or fireclay apron front sinks may cost more to install. Some have irregular sides that need very precise scribing of the countertop, and also they are heavy and will need to be supported properly.

You could also save money by buying a stainless steel apron front sink, and also have a much easier installation. It is a different look from a white farmhouse sink, but the stainless steel apron front sinks I've seen on this forum are pretty darn sharp. Mama_goose's comes to mind since she used the stainless steel apron front sink in a vintage-style kitchen to really great effect. Kraus makes awesome stainless farmhouse sinks.

We went with the Kohler Whitehaven, which I ordered from a seller on Houzz. When the contractors opened the box to install the sink (about three months after we had received it), they discovered that it was cracked in a couple places. Kohler replaced the sink and in fact sent the replacement by rush mail in order to not delay the rest of the kitchen project. We love the sink and the experience with Kohler was by far my best customer service experience ever, which I believe is one of the reasons people love Kohler products. I highly recommend this sink and I also highly recommend opening products as soon as you receive them to check for damage!

I think that this new layout give you some very custom features that would be unexpected in a modular home (things like that shelf that allows the inset fridge to make it look built in in the kitchen). I love the window placement in the rear of the house public spaces. I might consider moving the service / side door so that you are forced to go through the mudroom (encouraging a stop there...) and not necessarily having a straight shot out the hallway. Echo the concerns about the mudroom being too small, and passing through the mudroom to get to the laundry. HOWEVER - if there is a garage in the plan for the future - it would be an easy extension to convert a connector to a mudroom and then have the current combo room become all laundry (and separate the functions) Perhaps this was contemplated with the existing design, as I do see the "future garage" / driveway listed. There is really good privacy between the bedrooms here and good access to the full hall bath - I think that design element will really pay off for you in the long run. Looking good!

I don't know who said nobody in the US refinishes cast iron these days, but that's not true. There are folks out there who do it, but they are few and far between (usually hard to find on Google because they're small businesses), and usually expensive. I'm pretty sure there is one in/near Richmond, VA because I was looking into purchasing a vintage claw foot tub at one time and remember coming across a company that restored the vintage cast iron tubs (this was in 2016/2017 timeframe). I also once saw a DIY refinishing kit online. If you can't find anyone nearby to reglaze it for you, and you're out of other options, maybe the DIY kit would be worth a try. I think it's really hard work though, so something like the Rust-Oleum Tub & Tile kit would be last ditch effort... though I'd probably learn to love the stains before trying to "paint" it.

We are purchasing the Kohler Whitehaven for $626 from our plumber. Have you tried to go through your plumber? We found their pricing to be better than online, plus they guarantee it for at least one year. If purchased elsewhere, they only guarantee the install and not the product.

Well, I've got a Kohler 'Hawthorne' sink I'd let you have for $600, but it's red. Gaw-geous red. Rousselain (sp?) Red.

Any where near DC?

I have the IKEA Domsjo -the double bowl one. I'm guessing it has been about 3 years now. LOVE this sink!!! It is so room, so fantastic with the built in drying ledge across the back. Scrubs up beautifully with Barkeeper's Friend. No scratches, and we USE it. Would thoroughly recommend!!!!

Thanks so much for these responses.

I just looked at the Domsjo--the sink will be for a house we're building for my snowbird parents, so they can live a couple of blocks from us down here in the South during winter months.

AKC- thanks for the advice and ideas. Mom prefers white because the water spots on stainless drive her nuts, lol. Apparently OCD is genetic ;). I hear you on the irregularities of these sinks. I have the Herbeau apron front, and was surprised at how irregular it is.

So, I'll ask Mom if she thinks the size of the Domsjo single bowl will work. If not, that's a great idea--I will see if I can go through my plumber for the Kohler.

CEF- thanks, but no thanks, despite the fancy French name. Better get that baby on eBay ;) ;)

Check Craiglist. I got my never-installed Kohler Dickenson for $700 because the owners never ended up installing it in their remodel. It was still in the box.
