Why do I get myself into such things!!!!

I have spent the WHOLE day making doll clothes! I asked my dd what to get the grandchildren and she said oh they would just love new clothes for their bitty babies. GRRRR I hate making garments and it is doubled when they are teeny tiny pieces! So I have my wall hanging half quilted but needed to take a break because I got into this project. Pray for me folks I'm about to loose it.

I cannot imagine sewing a shoulder into a tiny dress or suit!

Next time you should give them a sewing class and teach them how to make their own doll clothes! Hang in there! :)

Just an update because I was thinking of this thread. I ran out to the market at the end of my road to get some milk and eggs because I'm making another round of pickled eggs today while I'm already pickling some banana peppers. Eggs $1.29 for a dozen eggs...pickled eggs from the store $1.80 for THREE eggs. So I have a few dollars invested in beets, vinegar, and brown sugar but I sure as heck don't have $7.20 invested for a dozen pickled eggs. Some day I'll have chickens of my own yet and then I'll really have something to crow about! (Yes...I did just take it there) ~Jeremy

I agree that things change when you marry. It doesn't necessarily have to mean that things go bad but both of you will have a new perception of yourself based on your experiences with and beliefs about what it is to be married. Brace yourself...there will be another jolt of this when/if you have children. It sounds like (and not having your wife's input here makes it risky to judge) she may expect marriage to be a very serious, forward oriented, grownup thing. She may have gotten that idea from watching her parents or some other significant couple's married behavior or from something she has read or who knows where. And she may or may not even be aware of her concept or how it is affecting her behavior. And you have some kind of expectation about marriage, too. Are you sure that your behavior hasn't changed as a result of this redefinition of yourself? You might be able to get to the bottom of it yourselves if you are able to talk about it openly, without blame and anger, in a common effort to make your life together as mutually satisfying as possible. You might have to have a good couselor as a referee. I do hope you will try to figure it out. It won't fix itself and 24 is awfully young to start being as unhappy with your marriage as you seem to be.

may_flowers and sprtphntc - I seldom buy either. I have been buying and looking at a few things lately. Both my mother and my MIL downsized this year and I got a few small pottery pieces from each of them. I wanted to display them but none of them really went together and so I was looking for other pieces to set them off so I was prowling consignment stores and antique stores. So much of it was pretty but not suitable, but when a piece "spoke" to me and I thought "yes, you will set off and add to my enjoyment of my great-grandmothers water pitcher", that's when I bought something. palimpset - exactly. I agree with you. I too prowl real estate listings (used to frighten my DH) but I don't want a new house. Appreciating things does not mean having to own them. mudhouse - oh I really like that imagery of "stocking the visual library in our minds". I'm going to use that line on my DH the next time a situation arises. Then watch him try to figure what I'm saying - he won't get it, poor guy. romy718 - Perhaps like your daughter, I just want to convey my joy in seeing something that I think is, for me, pretty. I don't expect the person that I'm with to agree with me because I do know that we all have different tastes and different definitions as to what is visually pleasing. I guess I just want them to see my joy in seeing something that I find to be pretty and I want to share that - not to buy but just to stop, take a minute and enjoy looking.. Oh, and to be clear that doesn't actually happen all that often. And kevinmark - you're right ,not every gorgeous accessory is meant to buy. I suspect that if one did that the joy of owning pretty things that one found joy in would somehow be diminished over time. For me anyway.

Even though I have a particular style, look, I still love and drool over other styles/looks. I have favorite color schemes but can love and appreciate other decorating color schemes. I am definitely in the camp that thinks you absolutely can have too much of anything but I don't have a "collector's" mindset and you seem to. I used to have a friend that went shopping every single day whether she needed anything or not. Really even whether she wanted anything or not. I never understood that except that she had the expendable income and COULD. I guess what I'm trying to say is I think it's perfectly normal to be drawn to things we don't need. Just be mindful how you react. It's a lovely lamp. I don't think it goes with the rest of your home.

Hopefully, the grandchildren (and their parents) will cherish these, knowing that their grandmother made them. I surely remember my Mom making a beautiful designer wedding gown for Barbie and a tux for Ken. I remember all the beads and tiny sequins, and the long veil... Wish I still had them today!
Put name labels in them (or sign them inside with permanent pen) so they can remember the maker. If they don't appreciate them now, maybe they will someday.

Once upon a time I made Barbie clothes for my nieces and guess what--never again. However, making clothes for the Amreican Girl and Build-a-Bear is a walk in the park in comparison. Sit down and have a cup of tea and get re-charged and then you will be able to carry on. Good luck.

Me too!!! Made many Barbie and Ken outfits over the years,and for the most part enjoyed them.Now if i do doll clothes i stick to American Girl dolls.

Oh how we all remember the Barbie & Ken clothes. I made all my nieces doll outfits one Christmas and I really thought I was going to loose it when I was sewing darts into the cups for Barbie's bras!!! The kids now grown, still fondly remember the clothes and some still have them.

Hang in there Vicky, your Grands will be tickled pink.

Just think how lucky you are to have grandchildren to sew for. I guess I can't sympathize too much as I love making doll cloths and doing heirloom sewing. Unfortunate there isn't a market and I don't have anyone but me to do it for.
You know there isn't anything wrong with the word "no". They could like a doll quilt for their bitty babies. Jayne

Poor Vicky! Teeny tiny is too much. The sleeves and darts people are writing about make me shudder. Maybe you could get away with "kimono-style" sleeves that don't need to be set in, and elasticized gathers and other short-cuts.

I have always enjoyed making doll clothes--both for my own dolls, of which I still have a few, and for dolls I ended up giving to young relatives and my friends' children. I would even use bits of real fur or leather or embroider them with beads...the sort of clothes I wished I had had for my own dolls as a kid. But none of these were as small as Barbies! More like 12~18" ones. A few times I have received extra thank-you notes from the recipients years later.

Now that I am into quilts so much, I don't know if I'll be dressing any more dolls, but if I do, I know I'll have fun.
That said, I do not enjoy sewing for humans, myself included (and I make most of my own clothes), so it was a real labor of love when I had to sew things for my mother when I visited from Japan the last 13 years of her life.

Someone had a point there, up above, suggesting one COULD say no.

Then again, I like the idea of showing them how to sew. That's how I learned to sew (I'm 51) & I started sewing, around 4 or 5, handsewing clothes for my doll.

I no longer have the doll, but still have the clothes, found them abt 10 yrs. ago, what a hoot, they really were ingenious little outfits (rick-rack for drawstrings on the doll's shorts, etc.) Certainly taught me good sewing skills.

I agree your Grands should just love 'em. Best of luck!

I'm proud you can sew teeny tiny. I never was good at it. Fortunately my grands do like doll and stuff animal quilts. I did make an apron the other day for a stuffed hippo.It was just like the apron I made for my DD and GD. She was thrilled. It never occured to me to sign a piece of clothes although I do put labels on quilts. You really do need to put your name and date on them so when they revisit them later they will know.

Take breaks and hang in there;when you are finished you'll have reason to be proud!
