layout question for 2nd dishwasher

My main dishwasher will be next to my sink on an external wall. I originally thought I would put a dw drawer on the other side of the main dishwasher but have decided against this. There is no room on the other side of the sink for the 2nd dw so... how about across the aisle in my island? It will not be directly across from the sink but about 10 inches to the left. When I stand and practice (and yes I did) it seems to work in a natural movement - basically turn and down. My concern is the dishes going across the aisle. Has anyone put a dw across an aisle from the clean-up sink? Any thoughts/opinions are greatly appreciated.

My dishwasher is across from my sink in the island and it's not a problem at all. The lazy eaters will leave their dirty dishes on the counter above it (instead of putting them in the sink as they used to in our old house). It gets loaded from there. We don't rinse our dishes - we are firm beleivers in the efficiency of the rinse cycle, so that may have an impact on your situation.

my main sink wall is 22' long so i will have two dishwashers, one on either side of the shaw's. if however there wasn't enough space i think across from the sink in the island would be a great location. i considered this myself -even with the extra space but decided on a larger garbage pull out instead. i've seen many people with dw's across the aisle so really not anything new. i think we do what we need to get the job done. also, as you said, this will be a secondary dw so i can't think of any reason it should be a problem. will you have a garbage pull out next to it? with this configuration there should't be any worries about spills unless you plan to rinse first; but still not a big deal. good luck!

I have thought more about this. Like Beth said, you could really get a lot more in that bathroom with only one door. I think I drew what she suggested. As far as the door between the two areas, I think it could go either way, but if possible, I think a pocket door that slid into the area by the tub would be better. This would keep the door from being in the way and be almost entirely hidden if not in use. I had one additional thought as well. Assuming later down the line there are additional children or the house is sold to someone with more than one child and bedrooms 3 or 4 are used as bedrooms. Is it going to be fair that the bathroom opens into bedroom 2? Seems like that might cause some disagreements. On that same thought process, the one thing that might bother me would be seeing into the bathroom from downstairs. Although this puts you right back in the same position having bedroom 2 walk around the corner to get to the bathroom, the view from below will be nicer and access will be more even between all 3 bedrooms. If doing something like this, I would extend the vanity the entire length of the room for plenty of storage underneath. (This is the placement of the bedroom door from your first drawing.)

Rhome & Alku, I like it :) It's not too different from the first round one, but the pull out rolling table is a much better idea, and killing the awkward Advantium, which is more than I need for a MW, fixed the dark hole of Calcutta problem :) I'll adjust the exact location of the cooktop area when I do the vertical drawings with cupboards, but I don't need a big draining board area. One of the things the counter in the "Butler's Pantry" will do is provide a good place to stack dirty dishes when the mobs come. One thing I hate is people tracking them across the kitchen anyway :) Re the fridge drawers, all of my produce is refrigerated. Warm climate :) I have a bar fridge now which I use for masses of veg for soups and stews, or for company, and for sodas etc., for guests. I'd really miss that extra space, so yes, I "need" it, though I plan to use it a little differently. Originally I had it in the "Butler's Pantry", but Marys1000 reminded me on the first round that it would be nice to have handy for resting dough. And I'd love to have the veg by the prep sink, and the sauces by the stove. But if it still looks weird, think of it as those basket things that people put onions, carrots, potatoes and apples in (which in my kitchen would be mold laboratories :) ). Malhgold, That is weird about not seeing the "Latest Plan". The sink under the window and the cabinet corners are what I have now, and it works fine, without squishing. I really appreciate the comment! I'd hate to be squished. Huango, Thanks for feedback on the sink size. I had put a smaller one to keep it under the window on the "Latest Plan" drawing. The same layout works fine with a 30" sink. The old one is a 48" three bowl. I actually love it, but it's excessive and I'd rather have the prep sink and the big single. In option 2, I think the the 1" noted next to the sink is the architect's shorthand to indicate the 12 inches required on either side of corner to allow for the 36" cabinet required for corner cabinet to accommodate a 3 bin rotary trash recycle. (I will try to post link to it) http://www.specialtysupplies.com/rotary-corner-recycling-center-p-3601.html I agree with edlakin & others that we could certainly put trash in island. My thought is to have a small trash under sink for the somewhat messy stuff that doesn't go in disposal & to have bigger trash+recycle in the outer corner of island- that way kids & guests don't have to come into main work area of kitchen just to throw something in trash. DH woke up this am saying he thinks corner sink will be a pain b/c when standing at sink w/dishwasher open you will have to turn a bit behind yourself to load dishwasher. So now he wants to lean towards option 2. Quick discussion w/architect last night, he said we could steal some from the pantry desk area to widen aisle to better accommodate dining/seating area but not so sure I want o go there. No way to have it all huh? Thanks again for the advice so far & any else you have to offer before we meet w/architect at noon!

malhgold, Thanks again for your excellent input. I'll answer your questions. Yes, I do have a big walk-in pantry in my current kitchen and yes, it houses many items that are not kitchen related because I have very inadequate storage in my home. BUT the good news is that in this remodel/addition, I'll have another storage area for non-kitchen items so the walk-in pantry in the new plan will contain only kitchen items. Yes, I already made a list of everything I want to include in the kitchen and plugged it into the old plan (#3)and I will work on plugging it into the corner cooktop plan today. I did a quick calculation and looks like I'd be losing approx 69" (5.75') of cabinet space with corner cooktop but the good news is that it would save $$$ in cabinet costs which would be extremely helpful right now! :) cheri127, I've already been drawn into the black hole of kitchen design minutiae (smile) and YES, I do believe perimenopause makes one indecisive (I'm there, too). We decided on this kitchen addition/remodel in May and the foundation was poured this week so I'm having to make decisions very, very quickly which goes against my analytical nature but could be a blessing in disguise if I don't make major mistakes along the way. Thanks for helping me think it through! Any other input on pros and cons is welcome!

The best location for DWs is next to the cleanup sink. That goes for double DWs as well as single ones. Plumbing in a DW elsewhere is a lot more difficult. It's not just the supply lines, but the drain lines. To do a DW in an island with no sink, you'll have to do a standpipe like a laundry standpipe and have an AAV for the vent. This is assuming you can get to your plumbing from the basement. If you're on slab, you've just jackhammered pretty much half your kitchen to get the right pitch for the drain for the DW, and it might not even work then. It will depend on the height of your other waste pipes in your slab.

This is something that you need to get a licensed master plumber (NO "handymen"!) involved in NOW at the planning stage before you lock in something that will be extremely difficult if not impossible to accomplish.

Yes, we did exactly that. It works great. As far as I know, there were no issues with pl umbing and installation. We do have a prep sink in the island, and an unfinished basement.

Just make sure you can open both doors at the same time. (not sure if yours are across from each other or not; mine are staggered)

I'm paying attention to this since I plan on two dw also. I believe I have room on both sides of the sink, but I wonder what people have done with the garbage... across the aisle in the island? In the next cabinet after the dw? I want to avoid any awkwardness since I like to (barely) scrape into the garbage and go straight into the dw.

I also wonder if I should do one dw next to sink, and on the other side do garbage next to sink, then 2nd dw...

I have a DW either side of the sink and the trash and recycling below the sink. It worked before the redo and works fine after. I have a pullout on the island and like it, but not so much that I would give up the second DW.

That is one of the cutest kitchens I have EVER seen! It's no far off from the look I'm going for either... what kind of cabinets are those?

My kitchen cabinets are about 70 percent in with a layout that includes a dw next to the main sink and one in my island that also sits next to a sink.
Now, my sink in my island has been hooked up for about 2 weeks now, but the dw is not. The main sink and dw on the exterior wall are hooked up. I cannot tell you how much of a pain in the neck it is when my kids put dishes in the island sink and I have to walk with dirty wet dishes over to the dw to load it. I would discourage you to consider doing a dw in your island without at least doing a single bowl sink. Just my experience. And I have had 2 dishwashers(one on each side of sink) before this new layout and I can tell you I would gladly give up a base cabinet for a dw. (But then I have 7 kids).
