... where would you go? And what would you do once you got there?

NOT talking about "staycations" -- where you could just stay at home and catch up on cleaning the baseboards (LOL!).

I mean hopping a plane or jumping in the car. Without kids. Without your significant other. Without your pet(s).

Just something for yourself.

I haven't done this for a long time--I always end up going out of state to see my nephews and niece. Which is nice, but I just end up hanging around the house, playing with the dogs, reading, watching TV, napping, and waiting for the 30 minutes between the time the kids get home from school and then dash off to extracurriculars or tutoring. So not a lot of quality time but a lot of boring in-between time.

I need to make a break for it!

Share with me! Maybe it'll turn on a lightbulb for me for a travel idea! (Not that my staycations aren't a good thing -- any day away from work is a good day!)

Hawaii! I would spend my time finding plant nurseries and mailing plants back home.

Can't help you. I don't get enjoyment doing things alone/on my own. I like to share my sights and thoughts and dining with someone.

Amy, since you only have 3 plants- why don't you give them to a friend or family member to take care of during vacation? I did pretty okay while I was gone for two weeks- I gave some plants to my co worker to take care of. The rest stayed at home and I invested in one of those automatic, battery operated watering systems- it's called Green Genius. For the most part it worked okay- only lost my mints. I gotta be honest- my plants were quite far from lush and green when I returned but at least they were alive. And, it was my first time using that thing so I didn't quite know how much water would come out, etc etc. It was also in the dead middle of summer so they really wanted a lot of water. You'll be gone right during winter, so their watering need will be significantly less. One month seems like a long time for me to leave a plant in the bath tub- so I really think you should try and find a friend/family/ co worker who can possibly keep these plants for you for the month. If not, I'd go with either a nursery or an autmatic watering system (mine cost about $50 but I go away at least twice a year so it's worth it to me)- which ever works out more cost effective for you. There are also several other automatic watering devices available out there in several price ranges. Toni for example makes her own (for her citrus I think if I remember correctly). Perhaps she can brief you better about it. Just do a search of 'automatic plant waterer' or something along those lines- that's what I did. I saw several products but since I needed to water about 15 of them- some seemed too costly. Since you have only 3 plants, I think you have more options than I did.

Anele, I have totally "drunk the koolaid" when it comes to crossfit. When I was going to planet fitness, a crossfit box opened up in town. I emailed the coach and said "I'm 45 and going from being completely sedentary to going to the gym every day and doing 7 weight machines and 30 minutes of cardio". I was wondering where my fitness would need to be to start crossfitting?" The coach coaxed me into coming in and doing the three session on-ramp class, and the fitness evaluation. I couldn't even do a squat. I couldn't do a lunge. I couldn't jump rope.. My balance is just... Tragic. I have a bad knee, and I was 70 lbs overweight. I was definitely out of my comfort zone. I apologized about my capabilities the whole time they evaluated me. Then they asked me to come for a class and assured me they would modify the workouts to my level. There are a few ways in which crossfit is miraculous: 1. They have somehow managed to inculcate a supportive, encouraging tone into an industrial gym with loud aggressive music. Everyone takes pains to help each other, praise each other, encourage each other! I very quickly felt that no one was judging my weakness, only pleased for me that I was trying crossfit. Love the people! 2. The workouts are different every day. Some days they work on strength, some days agility, stamina/speed/flexibility.. Benchmark workouts are repeated every few months, so you can see the improvement. 3. MODIFICATIONS - this is key! For example, today I was told to do three sets of 10 pull-ups. I clearly can't just do them, but instead of telling me to skip that part, one day I will... They simply stretch 3 big rubber bands across for me to stand on. I bounce and pull-up. Then at the peak, I dig in and lower myself as slowly as possible. If bouncing makes the pull-ups too too easy, then a coach steals one of my rubber bands, making me pull a little to get my chin up.. If you can't run well, you can row. Can't do push-ups, do them on rings. 4. Performance psychology... So they taught me how to lift weights with decent form. Then they tested me for my maximum ability to safely lift.. Then: they put me in a team with a 35 year old guy who was 6'5" tall with full tattooed sleeves. Our team score was the time it took us to lift 65% of our max weight 50 times between the two of us. I was lifting 45 lbs. he was lifting 160 lbs. but while I lifted the weights 5 times, he had to hold all that weight at a collar position, straining. So you better believe I hurried!! And while he was struggling to lift 160 lbs 5 times, poor me, standing there, shaking, trying to hold my weight up. He hurried too! So we were each encouraged to perform better. It's diabolically clever!! A couple of things i've learned: I thought I was doing great doing 10 sit-ups. The first time I had to do 30, the coach told me I could take as long as I wanted, just get them done. You know what? It took me a while, but the next time he said do 30, I absolutely knew it was doable. And so I was willing to put a little more energy in to do it a little faster. And a few days later, I was asked to do 50. The confidence I had from doing 30 helped me do the fifty. 90 % of the game is mental! It really is! I may feel incredibly puny at crossfit, but I walk proud the rest of the day. One big thing I've learned is that your body has to warm up. Honestly, when doing a bunch of sit-ups, the first 30 are the worst. After that, you are warmed up, you find a rhythm and it gets easier, much. Then as you approach the end, it gets tougher again. But however hard you feel something is when you start, it won't stay that hard. Your body will loosen up and perform more efficiently. Being surrounded by fit people pushing themselves HARD is motivating. Changes my perception of what working out is. I have been doing crossfit for five weeks, and I can't believe the changes I'm seeing. The workout generally takes 20 min to 1 hour, and I go 5 days a week. My motto for this week is: walk in strong, crawl out stronger. Lol. In 5 weeks I've actually gained 1.3 lbs, but I've dropped two pants sizes, from a stuffed into my size 18 pants, to a 14!!! I'm loving this thread! DLM - I forgot about your possible move! We LOVE that area and have visited many little cities/towns in NC. Also enjoyed the quieter beaches up through the Outer Banks. Maybe one day we will run into each other! How funny would that be! LOL AWM03 - we also love small town America. Most place we go we will explore the area and surrounding towns. There is a little town in NC (can't think of the name) that is Mayberry, TN!! We love road trips and do not fly. I guess I should mention we are neither one really interested in international travel. So much here in the US to explore. We have been up through Canada and that is beautiful country. Bumble, you said, "I don't really like sitting doing nothing even with a spectacular view, unless I have a great book to read or at least moderately good conversion. The view alone enthralls for about half and hour then I'm bored." I don't have a problem with that. We both lead busy lives and vacation is one of the times I do make time to read. There is also great conversation as there is no one I'd rather travel with than my husband. We can talk about anything and everything - or simply sit in silence. As for the view - it's not just the view for me - it's the surroundings and the sense of peace it brings me. Water soothes my soul like nothing else. An inn where you can cook? I've never heard of that. Gibby - you are right there in my spot! Kiawah Island!! We actually prefer Seabrook - and through VRBO found a couple in NJ with a lovely villa and a private dock. We have rented from them several times. She and I even email. I have found several good rentals from VRBO. We prefer condos, villas, etc. to hotels. On the islands I mentioned, hotels are few and far between. Our small dog accompanies us many times, and last year we even rented a LOVELY little cottage in the Highlands (NC) full of antiques. It was heavenly. Same thing last fall, we rented a cottage in Mt. Pleasant (inland but near Charleston and beaches) with a fenced in back yard. We will probably be renting that place again next spring. Stinky, you are NOT peculiar. Different strokes for different folks. I understand about your cat (see above). I am very, very particular about who I would leave the pup with. She travels with us much more than not. Thankfully she has been doing that from day one, so she is used to it. If she were not able, I would not be going. I meant to say in the other thread though, that we are opposites on the big city thing. I am a country girl till I die, and while I have enjoyed visiting some big cities, I am not completely comfortable in big cities. I have visited NYC and loved many things, but the hustle, bustle, the crowds, etc. are so not me. Loved New Orleans, but felt unsafe there. Have visited DC many times and have enjoyed much there, but we have always stayed outside the city. I remember my first trip there and how weird it was hearing sirens so often! And to whoever mentioned vacationing at home - we did that two different weeks this spring! We did camp 2 or 3 days one of those weeks, but we enjoyed having more time to take the boat out, visiting sites in our own area, lolling around in our backyard, etc. haha I often joke that I work so we can vacation. tina

I think I'd like to spend two weeks in San Francisco and Sonoma county. I have friends there that I haven't seen for a few years, plus I'd like to visit some of the antique and home decor shops. If teleportation ever becomes a reality, I'd love to visit Australia and New Zealand. I don't care to fly for that many hours, though.

London, Paris, Manhattan or San Francisco...stay in a rental apartment rather than a hotel...see the latest plays in Manhattan and London...shop the flea markets in London and Paris saving a morning for the Musee D'Orsay...enjoy the little shops in San Francisco with maybe a side trip out to the Healdsburg antique and decor shops.

I'd find a little house to rent along a quiet beach. Pick up shells, visit a tiki bar and shop some junk stores.

I did just that a few years ago.....went to London, UK and had a ball, toured Buckingham palace, Windsor castle, tower of London, etc. --- without having to accommodate anyone else.

I've often secretly dreamed of doing something like this, but always chicken out. When we went to Alaska 6 yrs ago for our 25th, DH went salmon fishing for a day and I had a blast poking around on my own. Nothing special but doing just what I wanted to do and when I wanted to do it!

I would love to spend time up in No Cal, just beach watching (waves etc) picking up shells, rocks bits of wood and other treasures from the ocean. Then figure out my someday projects to use them.

To the redwoods in Northern California. I grew up in No. Calif. and always wanted to go back to experience the special scent of the forest and sight of the creatures that call it home.

This wasn't alone, but it was away from kids and DH. Two of my sisters and I rented a cabin in NC mountains outside Gatlinburg and spent a week shopping, sightseeing and doing girlie things. We had a grill on the porch so we cooked easy things at night and ate lunch out. We hiked some in the mountains and at night drank a goodly amount of wine, ate all the chocolate we wanted and did our nails while singing along with the 60's tapes my sis had brought along. Too much wine and we'd be dancin', too! It was the very best vacation ever.

We liked it so much we did it again a few years later. Wish we could do it again.

Just had a funny memory of the first trip. One of the bedrooms was upstairs and neither of my sisters would sleep up there. We were out in the middle of nowhere and because the front door was just in front of the stairs they thought whoever slept up there was sure to be murdered in the middle of the night. So I slept up there. Takes more than a "what if" to scare me.

i just spent the week alone while dh was at conference and hated it...so vacationing alone? not my cup of tea...

maybe take sentimental journey back to la, and visit all the old places..like schools, apts, ect..drive hollywood bl. sunset bl to the beach...

I'd like to just have some alone time to travel to some of the places where I grew up. I'd visit some cemetaries, eat at some of the old places and rive down some roads i haven't been down in a long time.

I've taken trips by myself once the kids got into their teens.

I rent a car and head south to my favorite beach town. From there I go where ever the wind blows. Love to drive and explore areas I've never been or visit those I haven't seen in a long time.

I've flown into Seattle or Portland rented cars and driven the coast and the Columbia Gorge.

Spent a week alone at a lake in a cabin I used to stay in as a child. Did that one without a car on purpose since I wanted it to be just like when I was young.

I love traveling alone...my schedule, my time, my way on the highway. LOL

When I travel with others I make it clear I need my alone time.

With more than a week I would like to go back to Australia. Been to Sydney but would like to see the rest of the country and New Zealand. Greece is on my bucket list also.

I have no desire to do "tours". I prefer to talk to the locals and go where they go.

Last year I went to Hawaii by myself. It was so nice and relaxing.

I want to drive up or down both coasts someday, stopping along the way in little inns or motels. I also want to go back to Italy and Germany. Want to go to Japan too to visit relatives I've never met. Oh, and now I have to go to Spain to see Maria and her family.

I go to the San Francisco Bay area once a year to visit friends. I fly there and a friend loans me a car once I get there. I always have a great time eating seafood.
This year I might also fly out to Seattle to visit a good friend from high school who lives on Bainbridge Island in Puget Sound. Her DH died in January and she will probably sell her house and move elsewhere so I need to visit before she moves.

I would fly into PA, rent a car and drive to Lynnd's house. Then I would travel around PA and OH meeting people from the MH and KT. I have done this several times and usually have one of the gals go with me. We have so much fun laughing and eating our way around the different states.

Well, I'd want three or four one-week travel vacations.

I'd spend a week in Wilkes-Barre, PA, doing genealogy research on my father's side of the family that settled there.

I'd spend a week in Italy, doing genealogy research on my father's side of the family, and visiting the distant relatives that still live there.

I'd spend a week in Minnesota doing genealogy research on my mother's side of the family that settled there.

I'd spend a week in Ireland, doing genealogy research on my mother's side of the family.

Since we retired many years ago, guess we are on vacation all the time. We live on the beach and life is good. What I would really love to do is go back to the Seattle , Tacoma area . We lived in that area in the early sixties, and being a farm girl from the rural south, it was amazing as to how much I loved the city life. I still think about the first thing in the morning opening the kitchen curtain to look out at Mt. Rainer. Bluest skies I ever saw are in Seattle. I always think of the lyrics of the song. Of course, rain, but we loved the area.

Don't know - can't imagine taking a vacation trip somewhere by myself - I like to go with DH. Maybe I'd plan to a trip to one or two of the states I haven't been to yet (Delaware, Connecticut, Kentucky, Vermont, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico) and just drive around without any particular plans exploring whatever I discovered.

Choice 1: Go to Banff, Canada and drive from Banff to Japser. At Jasper, go Malign Lake, take the short cruise boat to the most photographed island in North America and make my own photo. The scenery is superb everywhere.

Choice 2: Go to Alaska and look up some shirttail relatives I've never seen. Take in the local flavor. Go see Denali park.

Way back before marriage and kids I took a month long vacation to Hawaii with a friend. I spent a week on Maui camping at beach parks and exploring the hiking trails. That was one of the best vacations ever!!!

Now, I dream of doing a solo week long backpacking trip to the Cloud Peak Wilderness area of the Bighorns in Wyoming. If I'm going to pull that off it needs to be soon, before I can't hack it physically.

Count me at the beach w/ a room that faces the beach, so when it gets hot I can go sit on the balcony and leave the door open to air condition myself. But, Id have to have some things--mainly a stack of really good books, and lots of cold drinks. I couldnt last a week, but I bet I could last 3 or 4 days. LOL

Oh yes! I could do this..Northern California sound nice, lots to take in, would visit the wine country, visit San Fransisco, take in a couple of days at the beach, all with in driving distance of a day.. And yes I would be happy as a clam by myself, I have learned I do enjoy my own company.

Since I've travelled most of my life I don't really have "One" place I'd like to go. I do remember the road trip I took several years ago in my little Miata. Went all over the US and met many of the KTers! It was so much fun!! This time I'd get "Tater" to go along with me! LMAO
