Small kitchen remodel...what to do?? With pics.

We live in a quaint little 1950's home and over the last few years have gutted and updated every room...now onto the last room to get a facelift, which is the kitchen. However we are having a super difficult time deciding what to do with this room. When we first moved in 7 years ago, it was REALLY horrid (polka-dotted carpet and bright green cabinets) so we just used some cheap pergo and paint to make it acceptable...but now, we want to make it really NICE. The problem is space! The layout is pretty icky and there isn't much to work with. Currently we are extremely desperate for cabinet space, but we want to keep an "eat-in" portion too as we have no dining room. We are just baffled as to how we can get more cabinets and a better layout AND still have room to eat in here!!!!! We are planning a total gut all new cabinets and floor...the only thing that will stay is the window over the sink, as we got all new windows just a couple yrs ago).

Here are the measurements:

Wall with cabinets = 12.5' w

Rest of the kitchen = 9' w (difficult to describe, but the basement door is off the kitchen, right across from our fridge, so the wall of that staircase makes the rest of the kitchen smaller than the cabinet wall - see photos)

Length of kitchen = 13'

photos:

This is the doorway into the kitchen, from the living room. The basement stairs are on the other side of the right portion of the wall, and the fridge is on the other side of the left part. We thought about knocking the smaller part down, but DH thinks it's a load-bearing wall)

One side of the kitchen doorway...and the pesky basement stairwell, which hogs up so much space in our kitchen. However, we have waterproofed and fully finished the basement with flat-screen TV, couch, and bar...and it's huge, so we do most of our entertaining down there.

The other side of the doorway...this is the ONLY wall in the kitchen that currently has cabinets. Also, as you can see, we have no dishwasher, which is a definite must have when we remodel. I HATE the fridge being in the doorway - when the door is open, no one can get through! Our cabinet space is not nearly enough...things fall out when you open them!!!

The current location of the stove. Would love to get the microwave off the counter and either a new one mounted above the stove or sitting on some sort of shelf.

The rest of the kitchen. Definitely want to take that corner hutch out, it's just full of junk we can't fit into our other cabinets. We have no where to store our water and pop, as you can see. Also, the back door to our deck is right next to the stove...it's just a standard entry door, so have to take opening/closing that into consideration when thinking about cabinet and table placement.

Really, we aren't sure what to do....we need a dishwasher, more cabinet space, and to get the microwave up and off the counter. Would also love to move the fridge out of the doorway. But, again, we don't have a dining room, so we also need some sort of eating space, be it a table, island, bar, etc. PLEASE throw out any suggestions you might have! We have no idea how to make the space "flow".
