Is that sixty dollars a piece? If so, yes they are worth it and are precious and really good looking. If they are sixty dollars for both run don't walk and get them.

I'm looking for something exactly like these for my family room, so you can tell I love them! It is $60 per chair, not for the set, right? It sounds like a great deal (or an absolute steal, if for the set). The style is not hard to upholster, whether you decide to do it yourself or hire someone, nor would it take much fabric.

Thank you guys so much for the very enthusiastic responses. I had hoped you all would feel that way since I absolutely love, love, love those chairs. The lady that owns the store gave me her cell number in case I decided after hours that I couldn't live without them. Immediately, after reading your responses I called her to close the deal. My heart was pounding so hard for fear someone had purchased them already, but as of right now they belong to me. I am doing a HAPPY DANCE as I type!

If you're interested in learning upholstery, these would be great project pieces. However, I would certainly recommend a class or a skilled friend to guide you. Covered buttons, tufting, and double cording are a bit tricky to learn from a book. Many small upholsterers work out of their home and are less expensive and more flexible than bigger shops. You might be able to find someone to work with you, or let you tear down the chair and refinish the wood trim before you bring it in. You can really learn a lot about upholstery by taking pieces apart and it only requires one or two inexpensive tools (but it is a lot of work ;-) For upholstery classes or workshops, you might try a community or technical college, county extension office, or fabric store.

As far as fabric, FabricGuru.com is a good online source. Hancock, JoAnne's, and Hobby Lobby have some nice upholstery fabrics and good sales from time to time. You might also ask sewing friends if there are any fabric or mill outlets around; you'd be surprised how many there are scattered out in small towns sometimes. I know of some in OK, AR, AL, MS, and TN, so let me know if you're near any of these areas!

equest: I live in KY. I am close to all three fabric sources that you named and have purchased fabric from Hobby Lobby many times. I have had to pay $15 to $25 a yard for it there, but I would really like a better deal. I'm hoping I can get a better deal somewhere online.

I would suggest you practice with some inexpensive fabric first and see if you want to upholstering them yourself. The cording and the tight fit around the wood will not be a simple job for a novice.
Definitely seek out a class if you want to tackle the job!

Just curious about the year the chairs could have been manufactured. Does anyone have an idea about that?

Also, I want to cover the chairs in a solid fabric b/c my sofa is a paisley design. Any ideas anyone about which color to go with to compliment the sofa.

What great chairs! I along with many others would definitely take these off your hands if you have second thoughts. These will be chairs you will never regret buying if you reupholester them in a neutral (not a matchey matchey fabric with your sofa). That way whenever you wake up in the morning wanting a creative interior redo, move those chairs to your bedroom, your entry hall, your sunporch, or use them as host chairs in your dining room. Congratulations, you just bought yourself a gift that will keep on giving.

Now as far as fabric is concerned, try The Barn (www.thebarnfabriccenter). Until June 6, all of their fabric is $4.99. Can't bet that price unless you have also stumbled upon some great chairs for a mere $60.00!

If you haven't done upholstery before, I think these are not the place to start. A big part of their charm is the curves - top, bottom and sides - and you can see that there is seaming in several places that needs to be pretty much perfect. Even as nicely done as these are, you can see that there are some lumps across the front edge, and that the check pattern is pulled askew across the front and seat. And I second the comment that button tufting and double welting are not the simplest thing to do.
You would be soooo unhappy if the result looked amateurish, not to mention the waste of fabric.
As to fabric choice, I'd consider something essentially solid, but with some texture, because there's so much texture in your sofa fabric (which looks very nice with Miss Sophie on it...).
Take a look at this idea from FabricGuru's inventory, and think about the possibility of picking out the lines by using welting in the deep plummy color.

I wanted to chime in regarding fabricguru.com. I've been ordering from them for quite a few years and I really like the way they do business. They charge a flat S&H fee of $4.95, and you can't beat that. You can also return fabric as long as you don't cut it and keep it in a smoke-free environment. Their website sometimes runs slooooow as molasses, but that's the only drawback. If you need help with a fabric, you can call their number and speak with someone. Most of the time you'll get a person in their warehouse who knows the products, manufacturers, etc.

I looked again, and I don't like my idea about the contrasting welting.
I think it would busy them up too much, and interfere with the geometry of the pattern, and the color of the wood.

Thanks to everyone for some great suggestions and some much needed advice. Based on what you've said, I've decided that I will not tackle these chairs as my first attempt at an upholstering project. As several of you pointed out, there are way too many intricate details that need to be perfect for the chairs to turn out the way I expect them to turn out. I ordered some sample materials from two of the websites that were suggested. I'll post again once I receive the samples to get more input.
