While you probably should have noticed it, the cabinet company had the drawings and should have realized that these cabinet sides would be exposed.
If you dealt with a reputable cabinet company they should fix it. Either by replacing the cabinets or, more likely, sending a technician over to match the stain and finish.

If they are a reputable company they will fix it. They wouldn't want their reputation harmed by you coming on this forum and telling the world how they messed up, would they?

If you had planned an OTR instead of a regular hood, there would be no reason to skin the sides. So, I have to ask, did you discuss what type of ventilation you'd have there? It's pretty easy to order two skins to cover that, but you'll have to uninstall the range hood to apply them. Send these pics to your KD and ask what she's going to do about it---unless you had originally indicated you wanted an OTR and changed your mind (then it would be your cost to fix). Offer to split the cost of the skins/installation if she points out that you missed this too and already signed off on it.

Thanks willtv and mossfern...hope you're right. Live Wire Oak: installation specs were based upon replacing the same style range hood you see - never an OTR...so no misunderstandings on that. If we can do this with skins and it's relatively easy as you say, that would be awesome...hood is a very basic, low-end model that's easy to uninstall- held with just a few screws. Thinking company will be much more cooperative/apt to help us if solution is easy vs having to rip out and redo cabs, which they may balk at. omg! i'm so sorry. i know exactly what you're going through. we have the same problem right now--except since we're doing the install ourselves, we're stalled at just having the cabinets up; no doors yet. 5 furniture ends were missing from our order and we didn't catch it before we installed it. our cabinets are actually from HD, Thomasville, and their receipt looks like something that needs a cryptographer to decipher, so we had no idea our order didn't even have these panels on it. but we discussed it with the HD KD; she just messed up the order. anyways, we never paid for them, and HD comped us for them, so i would definitely get on your KD about it.

we have the panels now, but aren't sure how to go about installing them. they aren't the perfect size and need to be cut a little bit, but we don't want to take the cabinets off the wall as we've already had several cabinet screws break off inside the cabinets. i hate those things!

INSIST on those finished sides. good luck!

I went back twice to the cab installers when mistakes were noticed. The first one was that they installed the back part of my island too high for the counter to line up properly. They knew the counters were supposed to flow into the back "cubbies" at the same level but had elevated the back cabs too high by 3/4". They came back within a few days.
After they left, the next a.m., in daylight, I noticed that when they put the island top back together, they had drilled to far in and a screw has pushed out a section of the back cover panel. Someone tried to hide it with glue and tape (of all things!) so I called immediately, and they acknowledged that someone screwed it up. I was annoyed they were not honest about it. They finished while we were eating dinner, so I came upstairs, ok-ed it in low lighting and did not have my glasses on. I did not think I needed to inspect every inch of it. That was 3 weeks ago, and while they say they are coming back, no on has yet. I contacted them again this week, but may have to call Ikea because they are the "recommended" installers, and this is unacceptable. I am livid they tried to hide it from me and were not honest and upfront about it.
In your kitchen, this is not something that they can argue you damaged. It was clearly not done right in the first place.

Should be a simple fix. If they are reputable at all they will take care of it immediately. Should have done the whole side the first time anyway. Can't believe they didn't. Don't let them buffalo you, they screwed up and they should fix it.

Thanks everyone...I'm sure his installers noticed right away that these panels weren't finished properly - and were just hoping I wouldn't. Although I paid extra for all-plywood cabs from crown to toe kicks...I'd be okay with a particle board skin as a workable solution on these sides if it matched everything else vs. tearing cabinets down.

Was really tempted to just live with this to avoid more hassles,(already had a disappointing experience when cabs arrived, as color was lighter than the sample I saw and what I was expecting...but that's a whole other story I won't bore you with here!)

However a lighter-than-expected cabinet hue I can accept and live with - this thing is a clear screw-up. I know I'll be annoyed seeing this every time I walk in my kitchen for years to come! So thanks, guys for the support...just sent email today, so I'll wait a couple of days and see how or if he responds.
