Please share pics of wood countertop on island

Going to rework my island and I don't think my granite slab on the current island will be able to be reused on the new island. I don't know if we will be able to find matching Venetian Gold that looks similar enough for the new island. We could take the island slab and use it for the new counter next to the frig. A wood counter top would work for the new island. Would love to see pics!

What would did you use? Does it hold up well to cooking/prepping? Can you put hot things on it?

I cook A LOT and use my island for prep every day - multiple times a day.

I love the wood top on the island. It makes more sense to put it there, away from water. (Pictures are on My Page.)
I have maple, two levels. I use it every day, but don't put hot things on it. I burned another wood counter doing that, so I just don't. That's what the granite's for, and if I need to put something hot there, I just put down a trivet or cooling rack.

I also would love to see this. DH wants a 10' by 40" island at our bay house/someday retirement home. Fabricator told me no way could be one piece of granite as too heavy to get up the stairs. Plus big $$. I can have a one piece butcher block counter for island and use pre cut granite for perimeter runs and save lots of money, but would love to see pictures of this look. Lost another house to Hurricane Ike, so leary about spending too much here as figure it will blow away one day too.

They are the Venetian - 24 inch stools. They are really comfortable and clean up nicely. I spent a long time agonizing over counter stools and I'm happy with them! They have a bar in the front and on the sides - it's a good position for a foot rest. They look great with the soapstone. Even though the soapstone is on the perimeter and the marble is at the island, I like it a lot. I didn't want to try to match the island. Good luck!

ugh.... we are just at this point now and realized that our new counter/breakfast bar is 12' with the sink cutout dead center. My wife is stuck on an undermount and we really wanted granite... we will, of course, be getting a few fabricators to bid it. But is it feasible to do the seam with a cutout at the seam? The front edge of the sink seems a bit vulnerable to me. Also the current layout has the dishwasher adjacent to the sink and I guess we'd need to get the cabinet built with a support at the seam. If we can seam at the sink it would be small, just the length of the front setback (breakfast bar transitions to countertop there)... how well does the bullnose normally line up on a seam? Do they polish it on-site? Are we better off getting used to NOT granite? The 12' counter is not negotiable in our design.

I think natural cherry would look nice if you want to go with a light color to keep the contrast low with the white cabs. A natural maple with it's yellow tones would also match nicely. That grain in the marble looks reddish to me. If so, a mahogany or dark cherry would bring that out and you'd get more contrast, if that's what you're after. I'd get a box of wood samples and bring your door and piece of marble with you and look at them with the slab. Pick the one you like best that matches them and has the amount of contrast you are looking for. My cab company had a box of 4" square wood color samples I carried around for a while. See if you can get something like that.

I did Breezy! He said Friday. DH is out of town on business till Friday night so he was hoping that install would be Saturday. It will just have to be a nice surprise when he comes home :) Of course I'm panicking because while I have been assembling and installing the rest of the drawers, I've found a few things that the guys missed that should be done before granite (extra support for sink & support for the top two drawers of our 30" bank of drawers) but DH said he can just make them work after granite is installed. Hope he's right! I have so much anxiety. I told him the other day, I know we are SO lucky to be getting our kitchen remodeled, but for the past few months of living with construction and every single room of our home a mess, dust and sawdust everywhere, dealing with contractors, design decisions, and financial stress (of course we went over budget, etc.) I feel like I can't relax in my own home. Just counting the days until we have a functioning kitchen again and I'm not sweeping our "paper/cardboard" floors anymore. Sorry - late night venting after a glass of wine. Two more days until we are one step closer!!!

Please excuse the missing backsplash tile, this butcher block was just installed today. Also, note the edge is not yet put on the side of the BB so it is not quite finished. GC made it from scratch alternating 2 strips maple with 1 strip mahagony. Our upper island countertop and perimeter countertop is all New Venetian Gold granite. It is Day 1 and so far I like the way the Butcher block came out :)....GC encourages me to "go ahead and cut right on it! It can be refinished!" I dont know if I will ever be able to do that but DH will and we can get it refinished in a few years if it get cut marks in it...

Sorry that the pics are small--I am not proficient in resizing :(

My mahogany peninsula top should be installed next week & I can't wait to see it in place...

karin - how is your butcher block treated? My cabinet guy suggested using Tung oil. I've seen posts here suggesting Waterlox - but I believe that that will seal the wood and then it can't be used for cutting/chopping.

By the way, saw this on a website and thought it might be worth passing along: Tung Oil does come from the nuts of a Tung tree, thus if you have a severe allergic reaction to nuts, we strongly recommend that you test this product before ordering this finish.

Hi Techmom_1: I actually havent treated the BB with anything yet as I havent used it yet--just had them installed yesterday. However, I did ask the GC what to use to take care of them and he said he would recommend an organic/natural type of cleaner and/or mineral spirits. My brother had mentioned to me not to use some certain oil as it can go rancid if it gets in any of the grooves. I'm learning as I go---I figure I'd just google "what to clean butcher block counters with" once I get to that point. I will probably be too nervous to use them anyways for awhile :) Good luck!

Waterlox is tung oil IIRC. It's what we used on our butcherblock countertops.

We used antique pine on our island. We've been in 4.5 years and it's held up great. I do not cut on it, and I don't sit hot pots and pans on it.
