That is 2 hours of my life I will never get back...

I just spent 2 hours looking for my travel case that has my handwork in it. It is a small plastic container with snapping lid. It is about 6 x 9 inches...well I finally found it buried in the bottom of the scrap bin!

Jackie, I'm glad you found it!

I recently spent a long time looking for 2 containers of pins. Never mind that I have about a zillion pins...I had to have the missing ones! I completely forgot I got new containers for them and they were in their usual places. :)

I have been looking for some things all day as well, it/they are all together in a case (?) where did I hide it??? -- something very important and I will be devastated if I don't find it (them) -- so even though you spent 2 hours looking -- you found it! Yay!
I'm still making a mess and trying not to panic too much!!! Not replaceable, valuable & sentimental.......how much worse can it be?????? I wish I was going to Camp Cheerio!

The average person looking at a wing cross-section would think it pushed down, not lifts up. Common sense would fail them there. And not wanting to be disagreeable, but I think common experience (emperical results), not common sense, guides most good gardening. We often don't know specifically why something works, at least in any rigorous sense, but we know what has worked reliably for others and ourselves. Reasonable, common sense solutions can sometimes lead us astray. Common sense might easily have all our pear pruning in the dormant season (as with most other deciduous fruits): practical experience shows that some summer pruning is often more effective. Common sense had us removing lawn clippings from the lawn ("leads to thatch buildup"): actualy experience (experiment) shows that leaving them is best apparently and has nothing to do with thatch. It is often hard to figure out when to defer to authority (whether university or neighbor) and when to go with the gut, with common sense. Fortunately in gardening, experimenting and failing occasionally has little risk.

Marie - You have my heartfelt sympathy; slugs are disgusting! This brought back memories of a former garden where we were overrun by slugs one summer. We tried beer traps (didn't make a dent in the population) and beer traps with a bit of flour mixed in (ditto) and boards laid down so that the slugs would be easily squished by stepping on the boards when they hid under them (we would have had to pave the yard with boards to make a dent.) Crumbled eggshells on the ground were supposed to be too sharp for the slugs, but the birds ate them. Eventually we ended up making "slug-kabobs" ten-inch nails that we used to spike them and then drop them into a can of salt. The last may not have made any more of a dent than any of the other strategies, but it sure was satisfying in a revolting sort of way. Some other remedies we read about but didn't try were copper strips around all the gardens supposedly to set up an electrical charge on their bodies (too impractical and seemed suspect scientifically) and pool filter diatomaceous earth spread on the ground was supposed to slice them (but would have done the same to our lungs had we inhaled it.) They never were so bad in following seasons. However, if you want a solution that's relatively safe to wildlife except for slugs and relatively effective try Sluggo. I know that you can order it from Hummingbird Farms in ME, but you may find some closer to home.

Hi Stephanie, I am so very sorry for your loss and I feel the pain you and your family are going through. I have been there before with a special feline friend that I had for 13 years and it is painful. Currently, I have been blessed with a very special, extraordinary canine family member that I love beyond words. I have had him for 5 years now and he is my best friend and brings me enormous joy. The thought of his passing makes my heart hurt and brings tears to my eyes. I am certain the reality will be completely devastating. Your story made my eyes water. Again, heartfelt sympathy for your loss. The memorial is a wonderful idea...for many reasons !!! I do agree with Barb...don't be in too much of a hurry to get it done NOW. I am also somewhat of a novice, which is how I came across this forum yesterday. RESEARCH is the key to success !!! There are so many factors involved and if you don't do the "homework" chances are good that many of your efforts, not to mention the cost will be in vain. There is alot of information to be had here and I am sure you will get some valuable advice and suggestions. In addition, check the web. Just search for EXACTLY what you are looking for and presto, there it will be...eventually. Ha-Ha!!! A suggestion for you that I found extremely helpful, check out the Texas Cooperative Extension (through A&M) for your area. I can't send you a link, because mine is for Bexar county. There I found everything I wanted to know and then some (finally). Size, color, planting instructions, pests and disease, drought and freeze tolerance, growth habits and pictures too !!! I printed out a page that gave me 30 choices(customized) of flower with all of the pertinent info. included...PRICELESS !!! A few years ago I planted a LOVELY garden in my front courtyard. LONG story short, a lot of thought went into this masterpiece of mine. Trouble was that I was going for the VISUAL. Let me just say that it wasn't nearly enough and the longevity wasn't there and yes, I did use all perrenials !!! So that this loving tribute will last for years to come....do your homework. It will take some time, so be patient. It is spring,I am in a beautiful new home(blank canvas)I want to plant NOW. I learned my lesson the hard way, so now, I am INDOORS doing my homework !!!! Your motivation for your garden is much more important than just wanting to see the pretty flowers, so take your time. That in itself can be a form of tribute too, not to mention therapeutic!!!! As I'm wiping my tears away, I have to say you pull my heart strings. I lost my mother two years ago to cancer. Sometimes I wonder to myself if it would have been easier to let her go to a sudden death, instead of living through each day, feeling totally and absolutely helpless, forced to watch her slowly lose the sparkle in her eye, until one day it's no longer there. I know in my heart that no matter the loss, it's the same, and no matter how many ways or times I could have said goodbye, I was never prepared for it. I never would have been. For the longest time, events would occur in my life, and my first thought would be to call my mother. But she isn't there anymore. It's an awful feeling to have to remind yourself of that. It's heart wrenching, and nobody could ever know the feeling of losing your mother until you've actually experienced it. There's something about the bond between a mother and child that just can't be compared. Fathers are special as are all family members and loved ones, but nothing could ever replace the void that was my mother. I miss my mumma, and there's not a day that goes by that I don't think of her. I felt the loss for the past two years, but I've only now just begun to cry. Like you, I've been fighting back the tears. My heart goes out to you.

While looking for thin ribbon yesterday, I found my plastic bag of hair clips that I use to hold the quilt binding to the back when hand sewing!

I had to make two lists of things to pack for the retreat, one in my calendar and the other on a loose piece of paper --- just in case I lose the paper list.

Every time I "clean" my sewing room I always loose things that I put in special places so they wont get missing...Some times I spend days looking for something that is sitting right where it belongs....Glad it didn't take you that long...

Glad I'm not the only one! This time it was searching for the comfy pants I like to wear when traveling. How could I lose them??? I went through closets, drawers and even looked through sweaters. Really tore the bedroom apart. Finally gave up and decided to do laundry. Yup, you guesses it: there they were in the dryer.

LOL, Kate, I thought you were going to say you were wearing them!

Yesterday DH did his laundry (stinky work clothes) and when he was done he was missing a sock. Later I found one of his shirts under a quilt on the sofa. I tossed the shirt at him and said maybe the sock was in there, and sure enough, there it was! :)

Scraps...did someone say scraps? Aren't they the greatest!!! Oh Jen...besides the messy baskets of scraps, the overflow of color everywhere...you just don't know what you are missing...:-)

It's reassuring to know I'm not alone with "special" places to keep special stuff that I can never find when I need to find that special stuff!

Teresa, I would love some of your special scraps collection and I bet Valerie would too! She understands what that array of colors will do for you. It just makes me happy to look at them. Now, if you tied them to the top of your Suburu, you just gotta be careful and not have an accident. Non-scrappy quilters would not understand the scrap vomit that would be all over the road! hahaha
