So I am watching a rerun of "Million Dollar Decorators" on Bravo. One of them (Martyn?) is decorating a modern penthouse. He is shopping, and plops down in a lovely distressed leather Mies Barcelona chair. He then proceeds to open his mouth and say "[t]hese Eames chairs are really great . . ."

Dude! You're a decorator! You should know better! And for everyone else, make a note that not every "modernist" decorative item was created by Charles and Ray Eames.

OK. Rant over.

Check with a restorer/upholsterer of mid century furniture. Maybe search the yellow pages online. Ask a lot of questions, like "How many, like this one, have you done?" Will you have to change the materials used in order to fix this?" Your chairs are probably worth more that you think and should be fixed correctly and with as little replacement and as much restoration as possible.

Thanks Pal - I got the ottoman but the chair wouldn't fit (for some reason forgot to cancel it when I canceled the chair after doing layout on graph paper - prob. b/c I had seen it later and ordered it separately from the other pieces). I did see a Mission style recliner (don't know manufacturer) in local furniture while out table-hunting last week, didn't see to work and it was $1010. I mentioned it to salesperson, she said they'd just gotten it in (though it had a Sold ticket on it that had been scribbled over so maybe someone else thought it wouldn't recline either?), often mechanisms are strapped down for shipping. Maybe I'll take DH to see it this w/e, but I need to get rid of a wing chair and ottoman in our BR, move my Goodwill silk moire chair out of the LR, and the coffee table I'm not going to use out too so we can *fit* a recliner. DH refuses to sit in the GW chair, and I will only let him sit on the sofa if he takes his Blackberry off (already scratched the wall with it moving coffee table in) so he just lies on the floor! Do you think dark brown (almost black) leather on the Morris chair would look OK with the existing furniture? It had dark "oak" (ash?) stained frame that looked to be fairly close to the "chocolate cherry" (half Spanish Oak, half Red Mahogany Old Masters stain) on the rest of the furniture.

I think it depends on where you are. If you are near a large city, I think (if you can find the value of the chairs so know the price to charge) you could advertise on Craigslist and find someone who would pay $$ for them. People are always looking for great furniture and many are willing to pay for something they couldn't find any other place. I see $$$ MCM designer furniture all the time on the Seattle CL. I just checked and here's an example... I do think it's a little cluttered, and that the table is too wide to get close enough to the chair. I'd put a pendant lamp above the chair, and find a small accent table short enough that it sits below the armrest. I have an eames chair, and I had a ridiculously hard time finding a table short enough to clear the armrest (this was before wayfair was a thing). I wound up making something custom, by ordering 16" legs and attaching them to a small round wooden tray. this table might not be your style, but you get the idea:

I think they leave in mistakes like that on purpose, though.

The thing I don't like about that though is it lessens the credibility of the profession as a whole. It perpetuates the myth that even someone who works with very high budgets is someone who just pulls random decorating ideas out of their @55 and charges a bundle for it. That's not generally how it works.

Jakabedy, I never even noticed, probably because I'm so shocked at half the things they say. The Barcelona chair is almost impossible to get wrong. There's no other chair quite like it, it is an icon!

Can we start a thread on TV decorator flubs? The one I find most annoying is when they refer to wrought iron as rod iron.

I agree Daisy - I grit my teeth every time someone on CL advertises 'rod' iron, or even worse 'rot' iron.

Do you think these decorator's clients watch the show? If I were a client and saw some of the things they say and do, I'm not sure I would ever hire them again.

I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt that he was in a temporary state of lessened mental acuity, weakened from the exhaustive effort required to maintain that sneer.

I've tried three times now to watch this show, and just can't get past about 15 minutes in, when I grow so disgusted with the self-importance of the "characters" that I'm forced to flip channels. I guess the whole gist of the program is that the audience is supposed to be entertained by the over-the-top behavior even more than the over-the-top decorating, but I just find it annoying as hell.

Jakabedy, Thank you for starting my morning with a laugh. Between the sneer and the affected accent, Martyn is a spectacle all by himself.

Auntjen, Try watching with the sound muted. You get to see the pretty interiors without listening to the BS. You can fast-forward through the designer close-ups, too.
