Modern Icons: The Playful Eames Elliptical Table
A surfboard-shaped coffee table adds fun to modern interiors
Having trouble finding a coffee table to go with that extra long and rather low sofa? Make sure to check out the Eames Elliptical Table. Designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1951, the table has come to typify California's playful modern style. Lucky for us, it was re-released in 1994 by Herman Miller. In fact, as this ideabook goes to post, many sources have a 15%-off Herman Miller sale going on, so grab it at a lower-than-usual price while you can.
At 89" long, the table holds its own in a large sitting area.
Herman Miller Eames® Elliptical Table
The Eameses were wild about experimenting with plywood; this table is constructed of seven layers of birch plywood on steel wire bases. It is available in black or white laminate.
Of course the table looks wonderful with other mid-century classics such as the Eames Lounge Chair.
Here the designer perched a black laminate Elliptical table atop a white shag throw, allowing it to stand out rather than disappearing into the dark floors.
The table is not limited to living rooms; here it works nicely in a bedroom seating area. Also, there is no rule stating that your coffee table must be shorter than your sofa. This table is longer than the sofa, and the proportions are perfect.
Let's not neglect the clever wire bases the surfboard-inspired top sits upon. In this room, the structure of the tower in the artwork has a fun relationship with the structure of the table's base.
