Did everyone survive the digital transmission change?

Did anyone have reception problems due to the switch from analog to digital transmission yesterday? I have cable so the switch was not even noticeable but I am disappointed that I can no longer listen to ABC television on my radio.

alisande- did you lose all of your stations now?

I had to rescan both TVs before all the digital channels would come in again.

The bedroom TV still has weak signals on a few channels and I've tried all the tricks I know. I even have the new amplified antennas, so maybe if I keep playing around or cross my legs just right. :(

DishTV here. No problems. I'll find out about the one at the cabin/trailer when I get up there later today.

What a case of bad timing! Now, while millions of people in the South have fled their homes and are waiting in dread to see what havoc Hurricane Gustav will dump on them, we are discussing the weather and ORCHIDS??? My heart goes out to all those refugees from Gustav - hope that the damage this time will be minimal. Now, back to topic: Summer seems to be a mixed blessing for most of you. But it's good news that most of the orchids survived. Mehitabel - you seem to be the only one who enjoyed your summer. Sheila - your summer seems to be hotter and drier than mine - August averages are about 88 F, and 95 F is considered unusually hot (haven't had any of those yet, this season). Jodi - congrats on saving your dendrobium. What a great sense of achievement that must be for you! SMW - I grow my orchids inside our apartment all year round. Direct sun burns orchids and people, even in winter. I give the plants filtered morning sun - great for catts and dends but even phals were showing the beginning of sunburn before I moved them out of the sun's path. Interesting thought about the Palestinians. They are great gardeners - I wonder if anyone in the Authority is growing orchids? Terpguy - glad you found a solution for your problem of shade. So, you and SMW agree with Kevin that I should toss the whatever-it-is? Of course, I wouldn't have expected any other reaction from you, Kevin. We are all acquainted with your philosophy. Hope you enjoyed your visit to Jerusalem. You were very wise to come in winter. The only drawback is that the days are so short. We have travelled extensively in the States, with a couple of extended visits to New England, when our son was there on a research scholarship. Unfortunately, the closest we ever got to Minnesota was Ontario, Canada (?) Sue and Nick, thanks for your words of encouragement. I think I'll hang on for a bit longer. The roots look good and it was a very expensive NOID (admittedly with very pretty yellow flowers and a lovely scent). I can always toss it later. Thanks to all of you! Judy

New CVT transmissions. Any experience?

I have a Craftsman 917.255810 42" 19 HP Briggs & Stratton Fast Auto TurnTight® Riding Mower equipped with a General Transmissions RS800 CVT (constant variable transmission). It was purchased on Black Friday, Nov 24, 2017. I also purchased the correct Craftsman 9 bushel, 3-bin bagger to fit the mower. I used the mower to 'get up' leaves 3 times in the fall of 2017. I stored the mower in a shed, out of the weather, until this spring. I have used the mower 2 times to mow my lawn. Basically to knock down the onions and dandelions. There was little or no 'real' grass to mow yet. My front yard has a slope that I run side to side on. The CVT started sticking, becoming difficult to change from forward to reverse and back, in the fall. In the Spring it became an issue to the point I contacted Sears Service and they sent out a service technician. He was a contractor for Sears and had enough work with Sears that he didn't do anything else. One of the common problems with this CVT is debris jamming the exterior workings, ie. Variator Levers, Inversion/Variation Control lever (forward/reverse), Drive Variator (variable pulley), etc. The Sears Tech said that my CVT was one of the cleanest he'd ever seen (I attribute this to the few times I had a chance to used it & blowing it off with a leaf blower.) and was not a debris problem or issue. The short of it was that the CVT was failing. The Tech said that the GT CVTRS800 was one of the main issue on most of the calls he was dealing with. He said that Sears & Kubota had gone away from it and were mainly using a hydrostatic transmission again. He did say that John Deere was using it in their new 'consumer grade' mowers sold at big box stores like Lowes & Home Depot. My options were to continue to call Sears Service for 2 years while the mower was still under warranty, then purchase a yearly Service Contract for about 1/2 the cost of replacing a CVT, or try to sell the mower and purchase something else. The Tech did say that he had worked on one CVT RS800 equipped mower that didn't have these issues. It was used on a yard that was about an acre or less and as flat as a 'golf course putting green'. The Tech is coming back in a few days to replace the CVT at no cost to me. The Tech said that the CVT was originally designed to drive the blades and wheels of snow throwers/blowers and it did fine at that. GT tried to repurpose it for Lawn tractors to less than mixed results. I guess I'll ride this horse for two years and then try to sell it to someone with a pool table flat lawn. I'm also with toefungus wondering if there will be a Class Action Lawsuit as a result.

I am going into my third year, and when I started I started with all new materials. Last year, my second, I switched out a few of the worst looking frames and replaced the foundation. Last summer's honey production was poor. I took no honey, although I could have gotten a few pounds, I didn't get around to it. So the bees went into winter with some stores, in addition to my keeping them in sugar water from early fall to as late as I could get out the hive. My beekeeper/supplier said that most of the honey producers here west of Boston had a terrible crop: way too much rain way too late into the season. We did insulate the hive: made a rigid insulation box to fit right over the hive. No insulation on top, and bottom space with mouse guard open. However, frigid weather came before christmas (very early) and the insulation was not put on by then. Their sugar water supply was in, though. In January and Feb. as I said extended periods of subzero weather. In January we have always had a "January thaw". This year, not. Inspecting the hive on a warm day two weeks ago, the brood chamber looked good: healthy dark, drawn foundation, no dead brood. The upper foundation showed a mistake I made early in the season. When I took out a couple of frames for the can of sugar water that comes with a new package, I never removed the can and replaced the frames. Those bees did what comes naturally and made a beautiful mess of burr comb. in that open space between the frames in upper box. But, the hive was happy and healthy. I fed the bees beginning in mid fall. The sugar water was not in a big can; I think it was a 16 oz. jar. They emptied one and a half between late fall and spring. Since I did not get out to hive for quite a while, I don't know when they stopped feeding, which would give a good indication of when they died. But they did not get to empty the second jar. I am pretty sure they did not have mites in the fall. I did not medicate for mites, however. The queen was in the upper chamber, surrounded by a good number of bees. All dead. Obviously. They really looked frozen- I mean embalmed. I At that point I took 6 pounds of honey and left, I guess, 3 on partially filled foundations. I did not have a single full foundation of honey. Markedly less than my first year. And yes, I have one hive, and my supplier recommends that I get another, too, and have two. I'm not too discouraged, but my husband feels really bad. Now that sentimentality surprises me! He really thinks we killed them somehow. I don't. Hope I haven't tried your patience with my missive. That's the story of Marie's bees 08. Oh I'm glad you like the lamp. I just came here because I was second guessing that idea, wondering if it wasn't too rustic with the French Provencal furniture.... Hmmm.... Okay, I'moverthat. I've got it pictured in my head now and it's working. In fact it should work quite well with your bamboo shades and fresh white bedding. Yep, I should remember never to second guess myself. Ha! Just kidding. I know how to get your bed to look similar to the inspiration picture, but need to know what finish it is now please. As for the sheers I was thinking a solid, but with basically solid bedding I'm thinking possibly something like these pretty (semi) sheers. Reminiscent of forhgtv's idea of a Sari. You can find them HERE along with pillows to match. I think the mosquito netting would be awesome. I have one for our bedroom too, but haven't hung it yet since our ceiling fan is near the foot of the bed probably a similar placement to your chandelier. I'm just not sure how it would work when the fan was on. Not sure I want to test it and be woke at night with either toile tickling at my nose or the whole thing falling on my face and waking up thinking we've been attacked by a band of marching Japanese Beetles. If you read the screened in porch thread you'll understand that last fear. And no, the netting wouldn't be too feminine. Well at least not to a girl. Your guy might think differently. That could be yet another reason I've not put up mine. My dear sweet hubby. I can just hear him, okay wait, I can just see him since I'm sure he'd be speechless for awhile as he looked at me with his eyebrows raise ever so slightly, his head tilted down and to one side, his eyes rolled to the top of his head. Then he'd ask if I expected him to sleep under that thing. I'd just give him the sweetest little grin while tilting my head pretty much as his was along with the slightest raising my shoulders. He'll give a big sigh and climb in. Oh yeah, I have that man wrapped around my little finger.

I didn't turn the main tv on at all yesterday, but we have Directv on that one. The 2 in the bedrooms on converter boxes haven't worked right since we hooked up the boxes... we'll try to get them working later. We rarely watch either of those tv's anyhow.

I never did order a coupon for a converter box, or buy a converter box. So, right now, I have no tv. It isn't a problem for me, since I quit watching television almost entirely last year....and watched seldom before then. I miss it as a night light, but that's about all. My husband is working over for two weeks and he likes tv, so when he comes home on the 22nd, we will do something about it, I guess.

Nothing changed, but in the process of testing my channels I discovered that I get the cooking show "Simply Ming." Ming Tsai's father went to Yale with my DH, and I enjoyed meeting him at the reunion two years ago. We still correspond occasionally. I've been wishing I could see Ming's show, and there it was! Thanks, Mcmann....... :-)

Our TVs are on cable, so no problem for us! We never noticed a difference.

The peeps on Craig's List are sure crying the blues tho ... begging for free converter boxes (if you have one lying around that you aren't going to use) and SELLING free coupons to those who didn't plan ahead and order their own. There always have to be those who don't make an effort, and others who want to take advantage of them.

We have cable so no problem here....I think they have extended the "free" box coupons until later in the summer...So those people that didn't get their's, can still do so.....

Well, we bought a new television for the family room and now we have less channels. How many weather channels does a person need? I will have the kids check it out for us. The converter boxes were not good on the old televisions. Our antenna also has an amplifier, so you would think it would work really well.

We're at the country house, where we don't have cable. We do have converter boxes, but can only get 2 stations. And they're low-end PBS stations (not any of the really good, major market PBS channels). The kind of station that is low-budget and doesn't buy programs until they've been out for years anyway, and you've already seen them on the wealthier PBS stations.

Oh, well, guess I'll get more done around the house now, with less distractions. I'm certainly not spending any more money (antenna or cable) to watch TV in a house where I only live 3-4 days a week.

I've been wondering what's going to happen here. The reception has been getting worse and worse but I decided to wait until the changeover was complete, the stations realigned and operating at full power before deciding what to do. Figured I'd have to get a better antenna by the way things looked but thought let's wait and see. I was wondering if they would delay it again with all the crying about it. Glad they didn't.

A couple weeks ago I noticed the channels were screwed up. For some reason they were coming in on the channel they were actually on rather than being redirected. Rescanned but still the same. Amusing, but not a big deal. After about 12 hrs I did a rescan and it was back to what was normal for the time.

So I was up late last night and watching tv. Didn't notice much until about 2am when I did some switching channels. Once again, they were on different channels. So I knew the change was made. Scanned again and all is happy. Plus the reception is FAR better than before. I imagine between the channels going to the more powerful channels claimed, they also cranked up the power. Clearest pictures I've had yet (on digital). Still not as good as analog on all but I can live with this if it stays like this.

Problem is every time I rescan I have to go through and filter out the channels I don't want like the religious channels and the duplicates. However, it's early yet. Who knows what tomorrow will bring?

We had a guy from Radioshack to come get us up and running this afternoon. We still can't get a couple of local channels. He thought it was because of the huge clouds we have overhead. We will see. Charlene

didn't even notice it...but we have cable...

Only one it bothered was one of those 5 inch b/w tv's we had in the bathroom.

We see absolutely no difference and continue having to scan. Depending upon time of day and weather conditions, we receive more or less.

I am real happpy with it. We have dish network and we pay to have local channels, but they come out of Buffalo and we do not watch Buffalo news. We could only pick up one channel out of Erie Pa, (on our antenna), but now with the digital transition, we are now getting several channels out of Erie. The picture is real clear.
