Does the Target one come without a harp like it is pictured? That's weird. If the Target choice is measured to the top of the socket only compared to the PB choice which is measured to the top of the harp, I'll bet the two lamps have only a 2"-3" difference in height. I don't know what kind of bed you have, but I generally like bedside lamps to be about 30" in height. You could always elevate it on a stack of books or a pedestal if you needed extra height.

I actually like the Target lamp better because of it's style. The PB lamp looks like it could shatter into a million pieces if knocked over. lol.

I read a lot in bed so I ended up buying a standard size table lamp with a 3-way bulb and it works out perfectly, and not as expensive as the PB lamp.

I actually had my eye on the PB lamp and then I saw the other lamp in my local Target store and did a double take! At the time I saw it, I was in a rush and my cart was overloaded with other stuff, so I didn't buy it (I actually want 2 of them for bedside lamps too), but I'm hoping they're still there when I go back.

I think Target has some pretty decent shades.

I actually saw the lamp at Target last week when I bought another one but didn't pay too much attention to it. I found it on the website today after looking on the PB website. on the PB site, it looked so much better in a room setting than just sitting all by its lonesome on the Target shelf :).

See, the lamp I reeeeeealy want is either the Bacchus or the Atrium glass lamp on the PB site, but they are even more expensive. I like the EVA in clear, too, but I don't like that loosey goosey cord, plus it's still more than I want to pay.

I've looked at Lampsplus,con, lightingdirect.com and lightingbygregory.com, but they ahve nothing that I realistically can afford that I like. This is for my guest room, and it's a subtle beachy theme (not too over the top). White wicker headboard, gray-blue paint (still debating which one!), white matlesse spread, this quilt and shams, and a print similar to this one (same artist and coloration, but mine is from a different perspective and has chairs on the porch).

Can you tell I'm learning how to insert links? LOL! One day I will learn how to actually put the picture there instead. :)

With more an more items at the mall stores coming from China, I think Target is a fine alternative. The Target lamp is lighter weight and you can see the cord inside it, but for $30, it's a great deal.

Did I ever mention the time I bought a darling lamp base for $1.50 at a garage sale...it had been painted, so I stripped the paint and found wonderful; solid brass, cast, ornate lamp base....and I polished it, and I took it in to be rewired....$12.00, and then went looking for a lovely shade....$49.95!

Get the one you like better. Over time the price difference will seem negligible.

They do look similar but I think the PB has a richer look (and price!) hands down. As bumblebeez said, over the years the extra $ factors our to a couple of bucks a month. The crewel shades are probably pricey, but they sure are nice! Some of the cheaper glassware can be cloudy too. I will be an enabler and say get the PB ones.

FYI, the Pottery Barn shade is sold separately, too. The cord is also visible through the lamp base.

The cord will go down the back of the lamp. It is out of sight in the ad, but in "real life" it will be there.

I think the Target lamp is a good buy. You could get two lamps and two shades for the $99 that the PB lamp alone costs. Plus, how about the shipping charges?

You also have to look at how long you will have the lamp. It's a fairly trendy style so perhaps it won't be a forever lamp. Also, it's prominence in the house. Some things are worth the extra money for the quality but there are certainly areas to skimp. Only you know if this is one to skimp on.
I have expensive (to me) lamps in my house ($600+) and cheap ones ($20 and under) and I like them all.
But I wouldn't hesitate to change out a cheap one but will always keep the expensive ones.

Search till you find what you want and can afford. Those are both very nice lamps...I like that look.

I picked up the Target one last night to take it home and look at it. It does not come with the harp. I assume that is because most if not all the lampshades they had do not need a harp, even the large ones; they fit over the socket. They only had one shade that I really liked, but I think it might be too wide. We have a couple of lamp shops around here, so I'm going to see if I can find a shade I like there first. I hope they're still open! One is a stand-alone place and one's in this rinky-dink mall, and neither are in areas I frequent. But they are close to work, so I may head over to one today and lunch and the other tomorrow.

The cord does run down the inside, but they used the clear covering rather than white, and so far it's not noticeable enough to bug me; we'll see if that lasts, LOL! The glass is not cloudy. I wish they sold the PB one in the store so I could compare.

Lindac - no, the PB one doesn't include the shade. That's another 50 bucks. I jsut can't fathom paying $149 for a lamp, unless it was one of those pricy stained glass lamps. I just about had a stroke last month when I had to pay $120 for a pair of athletic shoes that I desparately need due to my bad feet and knees! That is the most expensive clothing item I have ever purchased. :)

Natal, thanks for the Crate and Barrel link. I do like that Sprig lamp, but it's only 60W, plus the cord looks funny. I did see that Optic one in blue on the site, but it's out of stock online and not available in any of the stores near me.

They had this really cool lamp at Pier 1 last night that would have been great but it was turquoise -boo!

Try looking at TjMaxx and Homegoods too. They have great lamps at good prices.

Check out Ikea. They have some clear lamps that come with the shade.

I saw some that I liked on the IKEA website, but they are only available in-store. The closest store to me is in Charlotte, NC, about 3 hrs away. I was in Charlotte Memorial Day weekend and was planning on going there, but we spent so much time at Concord Mills Mall on our day on that side of town that we didn't have time to go to IKEA. We couldn't make it back because there were NASCAR races Sat and Sunday, and NO WAY was I getting in that traffic.

Oh, a funny: I was watching the re-run of Cougar Town on ABC last night. Jules (Courtney Cox) has that PB Bacchus lamp in her LR! Even has the seashells like on the PB website. Lucky her!!!

Just another thought since you are going with a beach look. Why not buy a jug/jar for wine making like the one linked below or buy some wine in a jug like that and use a corked lamp kit to make your own lamp? It could look something like

Shoot, I wish that JCP lamp was sold in the stores! I have a $10 coupon that expires on Sunday. If I cna find a free shipping coupon, I might order ti anyway and use the coupon for the parchment hardback shade they show as a matching item.

I found a wonderful glass bottle/jar at the antique/consignment shop today ($12!) that would make the perfect lamp! However, the bottom is that crackled glass and I didn't know if the lamp store could drill through that for the cord without it breaking. When you rub the outside, you felel the crackling. I'd hate to spend the money to make it a lamp and it fall to pieces on me. Heck, I might go back and get it and use it for just decoration. It was really cool!

I bought the cork kits from Ballards and made lamps. I found 2 glass jugs & stuck wine corks in them (since we have an abundance of them at this house!!) My DH did purchase a glass drill bit to run the cord out the back but they would have been just fine with the cord coming down from the cork.

Go get the antique bottle you found! You'll have something no one else does.

Joanie, that's the same lamp that corgimum posted. I do like it. I think I got the BHG magazine in the mail the other day, I will have to look at it tonight when I get home to see if the lady's story/picture is in there.

I am going back today at lunch to see if the glass jar at the antique store is still there. If I can't have it made into a lamp for reasonable, I will use it for something else, maybe a change jar for my future/someday trip to Italy. The opening to the jar is is probably 3.5-4 inches, and it has a lid that fits over it. I'll have to see what the lamp shop can do w/o paying so much that I should have just bought the PB one, LOL.

I found the cutest shade last night at Ross. It's a Martha Stewart drum shade w/ a chrome metal edging on the top and bottom. It was only $2.99! I tried it in the Target lamp that I haven't returned yet, but I think it might not be wide enough. The top is 9.5 inches wide, and the bottom is 10.5 inches wide. I also think it would bee too narrow for the potential glass jar lamp. I'm going to try it on the original silver skinny lamp I bought at Target. If it looks good, then I might be able to use that on top of the chest of drawers.

Are there rules about widths and heighths of lampshades in relation to the bases? Or is it just more of a whichever one looks better to the eye deal?

Oh, for those that asked, the closest Home Goods is over by the airport, and it's a good 45 minutes one way form home, maybe more depending on traffic. I don't go there very often because I hate driving that far and then they have nothing. There used to be one in the same shopping center as my gym. I HATE they closed it! Seemed like they were always busy. Now it's a stupid ol' Staples. :(

I like all the ideas everyone has for you. I have the turquoise lamp from Pier One. I like it, however it isn't a good lamp for reading, even with the 3 way bulb. The shade is a white, but lined in a bluish color. I was looking at the Target lamps tonight. They have some neat lamps, you just have to go often because they get snatched by people like us!
