Kids' Artwork - Painted Canvas

Hi all.

My youngest boy (age 7) loves to draw, color, and paint. I would love to let him paint on stretched canvas and then frame it for use in decorating his room. If it works well, maybe we could do a grouping of four small canvases or something. I know a lady who does framing.

Anyway, what's the best way to go about this? He likes fish, and his bedding has fish on it. I'm including a link below to what his sheet set looks like. I thought maybe I could somehow transfer an outline of a fish onto the canvas (after it is painted with a background color). This might be easier for him than painting freehand. We could do one canvas as a fish, another as a crab, maybe an octopus, and a whale or something.

Does anyone have ideas as to how to accomplish the transfer of a picture to the canvas after it has been painted with a background color? Or am I going about this all wrong? I'd love your input.

Any other ideas for accessorizing are welcome.

You might want to consider having him make some drawings on paper. Then pick the ones that will work, scan into your computer, edit, and then....

1. Send to a place that will print on canvas for you

OR:

2. Print them yourself using canvas computer 'paper'. I think I got mine at Staples.

Then frame as you want.

I think kids' art looks really cute on the walls of their rooms. I have used the art clips from PBK in DS#1's room so that he can easily change out his work. I have also framed some things (very simple gallery type frames). I think rather than transfering an outline on to canvas, you should just let him go for it. If you really want a fish/sea life theme, you can guide him in that direction. And, if you would like to see certain colors included (ie. pastels vs. brights, etc.) then simply make those colors "available". Part (most) of the beauty of children's artwork is that it expresses how THEY see the world. It's wonderful to capture their pure imagination before they learn to do everything the "right way"!

My 9-year-old DS still has a fingerpainting above his bed -which is simply his name in bright red paint - which he did at school when he was three. I mounted it on white foam board. It's lumpy and perfect!

Thanks all. I did go with the Allure Blossom. It's coming today. I don't think I could go with a mirror on that wall because there is a hutch to the right which has mirrors in it. I really like the purple and yellow bowl from Pier One; will see if they still have it or something similar. Might be sending more pictures of my next dilemma in the living room. Another picture where I can't seem to find another piece of art that compliments.

Does depth of canvas art matter?

The canvas depth comes into play for framing purposes. I recently encountered this when ordering a canvas photo print from an Etsy seller, when he asked if I preferred the 1.5" or 3/4". I'm glad he checked with me, as the 1.5" would have been much too deep for the frame I planned to use. If you aren't planning to frame your canvas, buy whatever size you prefer.

I think you are sick of "fake art" and are wanting something with more depth. I would actually look into finding some great artists that you love and want to support. Plus, when you have actual pieces of art on your wall you need negative space around it to really showcase it. Here are some to check out... For me, they remind me of German Romantic painters of the 19th Century, who were influenced by German Romantic authors of the late 18th and early 19th Centuries - my favorite period of German literature. This week I received a copy of "The Fair Haired Eckbert" [Der Blonde Eckbert] by Ludwig Tieck, one of my favorite authors of this period. I do like Novalis (aka Georg Philipp Friedrich Freiherr von Hardenberg) better, but they are very similar. I read all of the German Romantic authors in German when I was getting my degree in German, but recently I have found English translations, which I also find interesting. The Ludwig Tieck book is signed and numbered by the artist who did illustrations for this edition. A few years ago (10 or 12), I found a copy of Die Nachtwachen des Bonaventura, which may also have been written by Ludwig Tieck, since Bonaventura was a pseudonym, and no one know for sure who the real author is. "Novalis" was also a pseudonym, but everyone knew who it was. The copy of Nachtwachen [Night Watches] that I bought was published by the Edinburgh Press much earlier. I always wanted an English translation of this because it was a bit surreal, and I was not sure that what I understood it to mean was correct. It was also illustrated - either wood cuts or lino. Der Blonde Eckbert as lino cut illustrations. Kevin also loves and has been influenced by German Romantic artists.

I love the art ideas. My son also loves fish and for Christmas we gave him a small salt water aquarium for his room. Of course, we keep it maintained but it's beautiful at night when he goes to bed. If salt water is too much for you, fresh water is much easier. It's also very educational.

I found some of the cutest stuffed animal fish that all had silly faces and hung them from ceiling with clear fishing line. They also have adorable fish ornaments that you could do that with also. Very colorful and happy!

I did PBK frames as well and love them. They have a pocket so one can change out the artwork easily. I like this as we have several of these frames hanging on a wall just off our entry. We usually change out the artwork with each new season or holiday. I love the canvas idea too, which I've never done nor even thought of. Please post pictures when you and your son decide and complete the artwork.

Canvas must be primed before you can really paint on it, either with oils or arcylics. Why not get a big sheet of poster board or canvas board?

I wouldn't try to manipulate his artistic choices--art doesn't have to match the decor. If he wants to paint giant robots, let him. His creativity is more important than the room's theme.

(My daughter's at art school now, and it all started with washable markers, back in pre-school.)
