Slate, Tile or Carpet - Sunken Living Room ?
Comments (0)We have a sunken living room and I am stumped. We were going to put carpet, but we live in a very warm climate and are outdoor people, so I thought easy care would be better. Wanted slate but we are thinking of selling and tile store said lighter is better. What do you think of the big box store slate - has anyone used it - what did you think? I actually saw daltile slate at one of the big box stores? Our entry and hallway and family room are cherry laminate and the dark color of the slate seems to look better with the slate than a light colored tile. Also what is the difference to laying slate as opposed to tile - do you use a different thinset and grout. When I opened a box of slate I notice the thicknesses vary - how do you compensate for that difference - with the thinset? Also wondering why I seem to see light grout lines with slate in most pictures showing slate floors. I am thinking that a dark grout would be better to minimize the seams. What size should the grout lines be for slate? A friend has a rough surface tile and she says she never feels like she can get the floor clean - would this be the same with slate? (not that I am a clean freak or anything - a little dust doesn't bother me - but maybe it will stick in the cracks or rough surfaces of the slate?) Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Comments (7)We have a two story foyer and a regular 10' ceiling in our great room which is in view of foyer...it looks fine. As far as whether to do the playroom over the great room vs over the garage, for me there would be several factors to take into consideration. 1. Like cpartist said, a lot would depend on the floor plan upstairs. 2. I like the 16 x 18 dimensions better than the 12 x 25....I don't think long narrow rooms are as easy to use or decorate. Plus, I would imagine the natural light would be better in the 16 x 18 space. 3. To me, the only drawback to having the playroom over the great room would be the thumping from activity. My ds plays vigorous indoor bball games with friends, and my dd is a tumbler. I am grateful the floor space is well insulated, but still hear the occasional thump. 4. Could you make the space over the great room, and leave the space over the garage unfinished? That way you leave all of your options open. I really think you will prefer not having a 2 story great room, regardless....See MoreLiving Room: time to get rid of some MIL furniture!
Comments (10)Thank you so much everyone! I am a mish-mash of "styles" but definitely prefer warm and cozy. We have collected colorful plates on our travels over the years and that is a very interesting idea to group them all together. Over the years we have added white built-in bookshelves in family room, white glass cabinets in kitchen, and white built-in cabinets in the dining room. So I am leaning toward white built-ins of some sort in the living room and a less cluttered look. Also, I've finally decided at my age (over 60!) I don't have to live with furniture if I don't like it (but I have to convince hubby of that!). Thanks again!...See Morehow to get rid of the heavy look in our living room
Comments (9)you're on the right path-you need to introduce textures other than wood, say metal finishes, ceramics (like stools that can function as side table), stone etc. Basically everything that reflects light some more. Wood can be incorporated too, of course. Soft textures as well for a rug..yes to lighter rug, just pay close attention to function..I see you have small kids, so you want something easy to maintain, and not a tripping harazd. I'd vary colors too-don't make things too matched..I for example would switch pillows on your cranberry red sofa so it won't look like everything is supermatched to art above. Bigger credenza would be indeed very useful..both for proportion (visually) and function(storage) If you like patterns-introduce them. Some have very modern sensibility. Geometry, some large florals... Depends how streamlined you want your furniture to be, also whether you're okay with sharp edges etc, so I hesitate to post exact suggestions. But as an example.. light painted metal coffee table https://shophorne.com/products/tier-coffee-table interesting side table..used material(transparent plastic) makes it modern even though the lines mock traditional tablecloth https://shophorne.com/products/grand-illusion-side-table-clear you can find all sorts of ceramic stools on Anthropologie website ..not only there of course..but again, just to take a look. These are heavy enough not to break them, but if you're wary about it-check side tables with similar sensibility but made of different materials. https://www.anthropologie.com/furniture-end-tables check also their sister site. Urban Outfitters (and read reviews closely everywhere-can be a hit or a miss) if you like funny..) )https://www.urbanoutfitters.com/shop/birdy-side-table?category=tables&color=070&type=DEFAULT (sorry for posting links instead of pics..not every site lets you to save) there are so many cool rugs out there this is probably too matchy..but I still like it. Modern, simple, interesting. 100% wool-wool is easier to tale care of https://shophorne.com/collections/rugs/products/chandra-counterfeit-series-cou-18213 Add texture/light fabrics in your pillows..(you can find these anywhere), collect art that speaks to you, without worrying too much about colors..sure, take into account but don't let room dictate you too much, art is art..group small things together-say photo frames..add live plants-these immediately bring life, color, and texture to any room. Knowing your budget will be helpful..since I love to spend other people's money as much as everybody..and been holding myself from some cool suggestions..))...See MoreluckyAZ
