Our cabinet maker did ours. I think there is a lacquer top coat. In Toronto (most likely the same story elsewhere) the majority of 'custom' cabinet makers follow this formula: They all order doors, drawer fronts and the drawer boxes themselves from suppliers. In Toronto it's Cutrite Woodworking out of Waterloo. They manufacture doors to custom specs from all manner of material with choices of routered edge profiles etc. I think they may make the drawer boxes as well. The cabinet maker makes the carcasses, finishes the doors/drawer fronts and installs. Everywhere we went we were presented with the choice of 'any BM color' for paint. So the difference from one cabinet maker to the next was the construction of the carcasses, the quality of the finishing work, quality of install and price - all the most important things. I'm confident 99% of custom cabinet makers operate like this, ordering doors from factories that have the specialized equipment and real estate needed to produce them in large quantities. For painted doors, at least here in Canada, the most common material choice is MDF. For the same price we could have had solid maple doors painted, but you get shrinking / cracking and it's impossible to avoid. Our cabinets are plywood - for the entire kitchen it was an $800 premium and well spent. Cabinets are lighter, stronger, will last longer, offgas less fumes due to less glue used etc. etc. and the interiors look incredible as they're birch veneer, not plastic melamine. Also means the glass cabinets with painted interiors perfectly match the exteriors (not simply white melamine) and the paint adheres much much better to birch veneer vs. melamine. Off on a tangent I know. But I don't know how far along you are on choosing cabinet suppliers and this is good info for people of the future who Google it and land here. We did seriously consider going the IKEA route, with one of their solid wood doors and having them sprayed. But push come to shove that would have added $2000+ to the cost of the IKEA kitchen, we wouldn't have gotten the full ceiling height cabinets we wanted (9 foot ceilings) and it would still have cost 3/4 of what we paid for our fully custom cabinets. Maybe we got lucky in finding our cabinet maker (no fancy showroom, the guy who sold us the cabinets makes them, has a couple partners, one of which did the install by himself and also makes / paints the cabinets). It was cheaper to go custom vs. going to Home Depot, Lowes etc. We got quotes from everyone.

SW can probably match the Bavarian Cream, but it may be off a little. If you prefer the SW finish, have a sample done in that color, and make sure it's still good. Or just go with Marshmallow. ;D But, really, do you think you'll be able to match the finish of your lowers? Doesn't it really matter? Since the color is markedly different, the sheen difference may not even be noticed. With that, I'll end my super unhelpful post. Good luck!

I agree with Bry and most of the pros on here. Here’s my thoughts. BM Aura is NOT a cabinet-grade paint. This is just a fact. It’s a fully water-based, thin paint. It’s meant for drywall. Our company does over a mil a year, and I study the chemical science behind this stuff and study these products 24-7. I would suggest alternatives to a client, and if they insisted on BM Aura I’d literally walk away from the job rather than use this product because the danger of taking that job would be very high (the product won’t last, will scratch easily, and client will be unhappy). BM Advance is an ok product, but the long cure time and lack of durability compared to other similarly priced products makes it not worth it, IMO. TL/DR = There’s better options but this is still decent. Way better than BM Aura. The BEST “reasonably priced and readily available” product for cabinets is SW Emerald Urethane Enamel. It’s much better than the BM Advance in terms of A) durability and abrasion resistance, B) cure/dry time, C) chemical and mar resistance. Some prefer the look of either but they both look great but SW Emerald Urethane is way more durable long term and IMO at least I love the fact Emerald Urethane is brighter and dries harder. It looks a lot better to me. Milesi and Renner especially, often need to be shipped in. FPE is usually in our local stores. They’re all expensive though. Milesi also requires a 2-step process which is more complicated, so we need our project manager to oversee it. Milesi comes out super smooth and glassy, FPE Hollandlac comes out in a brilliant lacquer finish which some people want. My general thoughts, weighing all the pros and cons, is to either go with Emerald Urethane, OR, pick one of the very expensive European brands that meets your exact desire in a paint and go with them. But don’t do BM Aura on cabinets. Seriously. Don’t do that. That’s Magoo

Personally, I would lightly sand, and reprime, because, I think you get a better finish, but, I know many, who do not prime, if they are using the same paint. You do need to sand a bit though, for the new paint to adhere to the old.
