Best Paint for Cabinets Previously Painted with BM Enamel/Oil?
Comments (25)I am pretty hesitant to just let my painter pick the coating. I can't tell you the number of times I have heard of conversion varnish being sprayed in someone's home. I am an amateur finisher at best and I have heard some version of the joke, "Conversion varnish, respiratory distress sold by the gallon" at least 50 times. You don't stick your head inside cabinets when the inside has been finished with conversion varnish even days later, and this is ignoring the whole cancer thing. I recommended Kem Aqua Plus as it is a nice easy product to use and hard to mess up. I suspect an amateur taking their time, and spraying the doors horizontally could spray it pretty easily, even if not quickly. Spraying vertically you need to flash coat it and then come back and lay on the paint, but honestly it is that way with every product. No sprayed on coating is going to be completely without health concerns but I feel they are minimum with Kem Aqua Plus. Having said that, if you are having it done I would try to find your area dealer for ICA Wood Coatings and ask if they have a refinisher in the area that they sell 2k poly to. Barring that the SW Polane 2k Acrylic Waterborne Enamel is OK, so I would ask for someone who is experienced with that. Certainly a 2k poly is going to outperform Kem Aqua Plus in the long run. I wouldn't recommend a primer until I know what you are using for a topcoat, generally the poly's are going to require experience but be better, shellac just sucks to be around and dries brittle, an oil (e.g. Cover Stain) is OK but has slow dry times. However, now that I understand you are paying someone to spray it, I just don't know that it is worth it. Oil based paints are pretty tough and if you have chipping now, coating over that is not likely to fix it. I mean you might get lucky with a 2k poly because they are bullet proof to begin with, but you still relying on adhesion to the same layer rather than substrate and that is probably not going to happen. If this were holding up great and yellowing a bit, I would be gung-ho about it, but it isn't....See MoreI was just quoted $8000 to paint kitchen cabinets (small kitchen).
Comments (23)Now having done both and seeing the drastic difference in results, I would never pay a painter to paint cabinets with standard paint products. A lot of the cost is the prep work (labor is high these days). Standard paints can never produce a professional result and will not have the longevity of lacquer. I would go with a true pro and have them use lacquer paints. You will be much happier in the end....See MoreCABINET COAT VS ADVANCE - BENJAMIN MOORE FOR KITCHEN CABINETS
Comments (3)I haven't used the Cabinet Coat product, but I have used Advance. I used Advance on a nightstand and a desk ... and on the desk again when it changed rooms. When I was planning on painting the desk after we finished stripping and sanding it (we got it in a half painted state), I went into the paint store and told them I wanted to paint furniture, and they recommended the Advance. The Advance was super easy to use. I brushed it on, and it came out nice and even. Great coverage in two coats (I did not prime, though it might be wise to do so with kitchen cabinets), and no issues with the cure or durability. When I redid it (going from Wisteria to Temptation), I sanded lightly to remove the finish and repainted. It again went on beautifully and has had no issues, though it is not in as high traffic a situation as a kitchen cabinet. The nightstand was sanded and scrubbed to remove a bunch of awful paste wax, and I had painted it with one coat of a light grey sample paint because it was being a test piece for the color, and we thought we were getting rid of it. It went from awful to still awful in the new color, so we thought it might be more give awayable in the Temptation we still had from the desk. I lightly sanded the light grey paint and applied the Advance. Two coats later, and the piece is working great and holding up well as my nightstand. It's unfazed by being whapped with remotes or glasses. It hasn't been given the three-year-old-child test, but it seems to be doing well in regular use. Comments (31)Yes! Many cabinet refinishers will achieve incredible results spraying 2 component polyurethane's and 2 component conversion varnishes in a home... whether or not they should. Let's not forget that Conversion Varnish uses synthetic formaldehyde and will offgas for years, not to mention that Conversion Varnish is lovingly referred to by many painters as canned respiratory distress. Stick your head in a cabinet freshly painted with conversion varnish and win a free trip to the emergency room and a nice lecture from a doctor. Not to be outdone, 2k poly's have isocyanates. While isocyanates are used in small amounts and are only dangerous for a while (while aerosolized), they are quite dangerous. The deadliest industrial accident in history was the accidental release of aerosolized Methyl Isocyanate which injured over half a million people and killed several thousand. I am generally OK with 2k polyurethane's being sprayed in a home that will be vacant for the entire painting process and a couple of days after, but in my experience painters often adopt products and skip the safety precautions. Which is fine so long as the homeowner is aware of the dangers, but they are too often left in the dark. --- If this were my house, I would look into Envirolak 200, but still take a few days away....See MoreSF
