What do you think of 'Gladiator' shoes?

For several years I've noticed celebrities wearing 'Gladiator' shoes. They resemble the leather sandals with lots of leather straps that you associate with Roman gladiators. Instead of the shoes serving as an accessory that compliments an outfit they tend to draw attention away from the face and clothing down to the feet. And then the feet are nearly encased in leather from toe to ankle or even mid-calf or higher. They look clunky even on shapely legs. Personally I think they're fairly unattractive and it's one fashion that I hope fades soon. I think thin, strappy sandals are much prettier.

Ornithogalums??? Oh vetivert, you are bad, but Ornithogalum is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of spring chores and getting to work outside, usually in late Feb. Now I realize my question could have and should have been phrased a lot better. How about this? If the Bulb Forum members would submit their (own) pics of plants and blooms grown from bulbs for a new forum picture, what should it be? . Should it be open to anything grown from bulbs? Should it maybe exclude such things that have more 'specific' forums of their own, such as Lily, Tropical, and House Plant? Should it be an individual bloom, or as you suggested, maybe a still life flower arrangement of numerous delectable blooms grown from bulbs? Please 'scuse me for just having tunnel vision and tunnel thoughts of just Daffodils. At any rate, the folks who are having their spring now, can hopefully be trying to get some great pics. Ok...so when does anyone think we could/should start taking picture submissions? Should we wait until late 2010 so glads could be included by those in the US who grow them? Should we wait a full year (or nearly) so the members down under have an opportunity to have another summer blooming season, like for glads? hmmm...what is fairest? I guess before proceeding, I should check with the 'Powers that be' to see for sure if they would be willing to get the pic changed and updated with a pretty pic of our choosing. I hope lots of folks will give their input and in time, post their pics for entry. In doing a search here on the forum, it seems that Tulips and Daffs are the 2 things most often posted about. I imagine though that tulips are most frequently asked about, due to them having problems, or emerging early, or for not blooming a second season when they are thought to be perennials like daffodils. I made all nine in two days. Maybe I do something different. I stack and glue the pieces all at once. I don't have the patience to wait for each piece to set...the tall thin one is my favorite. I found Candle sticks and the mini vases on top at one yard sale Saturday Morning and had it put together as soon as I got home. If you want to see them close up click on the picture and I have singles of each close up in the album on Picasa. I must confess the red birdbath is simple clear glass that I have painted with glass paint. I wanted to try my hand at revers painting on glass. I am please with the results. I may have to make another painted one I have lots of clear glass but color sure makes a statement. When I started I was only gonna make one or two, Because I had no interuptions I just kept going! I wanted One of each color of the rainbow! LOL They will all be displayed in one Bed, held in with sand then Mulch. I also found Brand New White vinyl edgeing to use but I want to paint it first or at least wash it with some color. I am worried about Hurricane season. LOL Here are some pics of the bird bath. It is neck and neck roses running equal to shoes, since I rent. Despite having an intention to simplifiy my life and buy fewer things that I don't need, which includes shoes I don't wear and roses bought or grown from cuttings on impulse 88 of those in the past. I've acquired 3 pairs of shoes that I bought more than a year ago and have not worn yet, though two are very stylish, black leather with ankle straps, one with leather pleating on the toe area, ( I love ankle straps and kitten heels). In addition to c. 12 other various footware, flats, heels, -one strappy pair of be-jeweled thongs, to wear with sundresses. - Doc Martin black leather boots, for Halloween mostly as I've outgrown mosh pits. - a demure pair of low cream heels for church on Sundays, and Evensong. --blue plastic beach thongs -two pairs of Clarks sandals, in brown and navy. - two pairs of sneakers, white, and blue. -Mary Janes Roses, I went from having c. 200 to care for, to c. 14 last time I counted, the problem is of renting. Still looking for a house to buy, or rather property to plant a rose garden, with a house on it. Note the roses come first. Oh, to have what Melissa has.... it is hard not to desire such vast beauty for my own, 500 roses in Tuscany, and to share it with loved ones. Lux.

Oldgardener, I have worn closed toed shoes for years, and I found these at a great clearance price so I went for them. I would love to wear them to work which is why I asked. Amyfiddler, Like I said in the original post, we ARE allowed to wear peep toes, but they have to be worn with nylons or tights. Trust me, some of the rules are pretty contradictory, but I didn't write them so I just have to follow them! AmyGibby, why would I post the question if I didn't want some feedback? And I DID try the dancers tights and they work just fine.

Considering what happened to gladiators, I really do not think gladiators should be setting fashion. What's next, carrying a mace instead of a purse? Instead of jogging, going out to be chased by a lion? Instead of an umbrella, carrying a studded shield? That makes as much sense as "gladiator shoes"!

Oh thank heavens I'm not alone on this. I wonder if the women who wear them really think they're attractive or are they just wearing something trendy to maintain their fashionista ranking.

I'd love them if I was 25!!! If you are young and tall and thin they are killer. At 54 I'm way past that look.

I absolutely HATE them,they are the UGLIEST shoes I have ever seen.I hope they dissappear rather quickly.Hopefully they wont be replaced by some style even worse.

Have you ever worn these? I can't believe gladiators wore them. The ones who did must have lost. These shoes are so uncomfortable -- you can't move your ankles and legs normally, and they are forever coming untied. I had better luck keeping my toe shoes tied than these cumbersome things. (It's been a long time, but I remember when gladiator sandals were in vogue before.)

They're probably a shoe style that (ahem) gentlemen find attractive. I could see where there's a sort of kinky allure LOL.

I think they look sexy on Gladiators! I'd wear them as part of my Renaissance Costume. My Soft Leather Renny shoes are uglier than Gladiator Sandals. LOL!

I have some flats that are gladiator ones and they buckle no ties I love them and get compliments on them every time I wear them and they ask were I got them...but the ones you show I think are ugly....but I love mine.....Stacy

I don't even like ballet slippers that tie above the ankle. Foot apparel needs to END with the foot.

Butt-ugly is a perfect description of those gladiator shoes.

Even when I weighed 92 pounds I couldn't wear them. I have always had well developed calves and thickish ankles. Ankle and mid calf anything never worked for me.

For that price, it doesn't matter if I like them or not! I'd consider that a pretty hefty car payment. And no, I wouldn't do that either.

I agree with Donna. If I was young, tall and had long legs I'd probably wear them. But I'm none of the above! Plus I'd never buy a pair of shoes that cost more than my house payment! Now that's ugly!!

I hate those! But to be fair, there is a wide range of "gladiator sandal" styles.

I kind of like the Cole Haan Air Danni for a flat version, and the Cynthia Vincent Titus in black for a high heeled version. But the prices!!! :(
