You've got me started again!

I've been wanting to get quilting again but purposely put it off this summer until I achieved a certain level of decluttering this house. Then, when I hit that point I have that feeling I get all the time when I start a new quilt - it's overwhelming...where am I going to set up so I can leave things for awhile to sew the top....

So I started again thanks to the inspiration from all of you!

I don't know much about quilt making, but I love the colors you have chosen - it is going to be absolutely beautiful! Can't wait to see how it all progresses. How talented you are.

There are other factors besides air circulation that contribute to damp-off that you may not be controlling for and the key to the air control is circulating/moving air so just being outside may not be sufficient. Excess watering is the biggest factor but there is also soil/air temps (since you mention outside) and overcrowding. It's really nothing new. Bill Thoms has been doing it for years with his Bulbos, Phrags are commonly grown this way and the old SH method is just a variation. Some grow orchids in water only, no media at all. There is an extensive discussion of this here: http://www.usapatriotsamerica.com/culture/water.htm I have tried it and it works. I don't use it as I don't find it user friendly, having to empty the containers of water weekly, cleaning them and refilling them does not blow my skirts up, but the plants don't object. I got a variety of plants from Cal Orchids once and on the way out asked the owner, James Rose, some culture questions about growing them this way or that way. He cut me off and said: "It ALL works." As long as you keep an eye on the plant and let the plant tell you if it's happy or otherwise and as long as you are consistent, virtually everything will work. Some methods work better! That's really the trick isn't it. So far I'm convinced that these water trays work better for Bulbos, Rain Forest Plants, Phrags and some select species. I'm also convinced that roots are adaptable and grow to match the requirement of the current situation. I often buy plants who have spent their entire life in a pot full of bark. That's what the roots are used to. I take them out, discard the bark and grow the plant bare-root. Existing roots are less than happy, linger and fade while new vigorous roots grow which are perfect for the new environment. The same is true when you first put a plant into SH. Existing roots die off and new ones form. Then there is the most important factor in orchid culture: YOUR PERSONAL SATISFACTION AND HAPPINESS. Most of the members of my orchid society appreciate the fact that they only need to water once a week and wonder why I go to the trouble of creating situations that require daily care and attention. The answer is simple: "Because I like it that way!" As long as the plants grow well and bloom, the method of achieving this end should be entirely an individual choice. There are a few lines in the sand you cannot cross. If you want Dend nobile to bloom you cannot sit them in a tray of water all year long, they need a dry Winter rest, but most plants will adapt to most conditions. Some plants just simply don't want to adapt to the conditions I create and absolutely won't do well in my care. 'Don't let the door hit you on the butt on the way out' is all I have to say to them as I take them our silent auction or give them away. You most likely have Fragrant Blue or something very like it. This was probably a batch of Blue Fame tissue culture that was labeled and grown... and this is one that went to all blue. It should have been culled. For the retailer, this means a loss, so either from ignorance or greed it was left on the counter. I did have one batch of either Blue Flame or Secret Love (more later) where about a third of them went all blue by the second year. Most folks call this a reversion, assuming the plant "reverted" to the original set of genes in the parent plant of Blue Flame - Fragrant Blue. Though the plant is likely to be Fragrant Blue, I've seen too many cases where the solid color plant turns out bigger or smaller or different in some way, so I never use the term reversion. Nonetheless - Fragrant Blue is an old, inexpensive variety while Blue Flame is newer and more costly. Blue Flame has about a quarter inch margin that goes from yellowish to cream through the season. btw - Secret Love is, as far as I can tell, identical to Blue Flame... BF came out of Shady Oaks tissue culture and was released by Naylor Creek... SL came from Europe. I'd get my money back - or at least get a parial refund. Fragrant Blue is a very nice blue hosta and well worth growing. Good powdery blue and surprising sun tolerance for a blue. The name has been controversial for decades. The plant is not fragrant - and to most of us, the flowers are not fragrant. This plant has none of the plantaginea genes that produce the lovely fragranced (usually large and white) flowers in hostas. The originator, Paul Aden, registered it in 1988. I think I've had it about that long and have never been able to detect any fragrance in the flowers. Sometimes... maybe... a hint... if I stick my nose in until there is pollen on my nostril hairs... maybe a hint. Some folks say it is there, but very mild. Most of us say... nawwwwww.... Nobody seems to claim any fragrance for Secret Love or Blue Flame.

When you delay going to the doctor (to find out if that pain in your right side is really your appendix) two hours while you water the baby (mostly tomato) seedlings, move them to the basement, and set up the timer and the last shoplights so they'll stay alive in your (possibly extended) absence. When you spend hours of your recovery time writing and printing labels with not only the variety names, but detailed descriptions for the several dozen extra seedlings you're giving to the scholarship plant sale. [It wasn't ever very painful, but the CT-scan impressed the radiologist, the appendix impressed the surgeon, and I didn't get home for 3 1/2 days, which is ... not normal. (I'm convinced it would have been a day or two less if only they'd ever let me sleep.) The seedlings did quite well in my absence.]

Blues and greens is my favorite combination-- it will be a beautiful quilt. I see you have a Janome machine. Can you tell me about it and why you like/dislike it. I was looking at some at a quilt show and they were soooo expensive--of course they were the top of the line. I could use more throat space on my machine.

I want to know, too. I use a modern elcheapo lately, although I have an very nice older Necchi (sic?) I should be using once I get it cleaned and adjusted. I also use a treadle but mine is not the best sewing machine, too touchy. I have several treadle frames and cabinets, and Janome makes a non-electric machine for the Amish population. I wondered about the quality of them, since they aren't sold in this area.

I just finished my return to quilting, so I know it will release those wonderful feelings you have put on hold. I too am surprised you sew with so little extra space. I guess it works for you. Love the colors, too.

As for this particular machine, it's a Janome Harmony 2049. A basic manual sewing machine. You can find them under $200. It's a cheap machine but works fine for me right now. I am looking to buy their Janome Memorycraft 6600P in the new year. My present machine would be fine for basic sewing, making clothes and a starter machine. I have a featherweight and a treadle machine (waiting for a new wooden top...from DH). I've not used the featherweight yet - it's coming out soon because of all the wonderful feet I've purchased for it. I want a better machine to do machine quilting and fancy stitches and more. If you already have a basic sewing machine that works fine this would be equivalent to that one - more or less.
Today I decided I will be embellishing this quilt with bright orange embroidery in spots to make it all pop. Not shown are the flower blocks I purchased on ebay. I'll show those later when the top is finished.
Now, as for sewing space...I am supposed to have a sewing room in my basement but it's full of furniture awaiting pickup now - going on 4 months (grrrrrrr). Things will be moving soon! I can sew just about anywhere. It's not the greatest set up right now but everything is handy and I can still iron while plugged into my tunes!

I love the colors. Keep us posted as the quilt progresses.

I laughed about your tunes. When I'm sewing I have a little speaker setup so I can plug in my iPod and listen to books I've downloaded. It's reading and quilting at the same time! What could be better than that? lol I'm addicted to both.

Chrizty I keep checking as I sew my points, I place my fingernail right on the spot where the point is below and sew right next to it (allows room for the fabric to fold back). I used to pin but now I'm comfortable using my fingernail. I'm not afraid to pull the thread out and redo the piecing if it doesn't look good enough. I never quilt to be in a rush and with every project I complete I seem to be getting fussier about my work. It's a continued learning curve each time. Keep on sewing, you will get more comfortable over time.

Thanks again for the positive comments. I'm an avid gardener so the colours are some of my favorites too.
