Facebook Privacy Question

Forgive the probably dumb question: I'm kind of new to Facebook. Let's say you are logged in and you want to check out the content of someone else's site (no friend request: you just want to browse what is available for public viewing). Does something let that person know you've looked at their site? I would like to browse someone's site incognito, and I'm suspicious that something might pop up to the person saying "XXX just read your site!"

As far as I know that person won't know you viewed their site. What you can see will vary though depending on what privacy controls that person has chosen to set. Some sites you can't see anything ..others are more open. I view sites sometimes in an effort to find cousins and relatives etc. Sometimes I can see enough info to let me decide if the person is a relative and sometimes I can't see anything.

Facebook does not tell you who looked at your page.

Another option would be to view the page in Private Window mode in Firefox.... if you are really, really worried (but you should not be!).

I did an email to everyone I know in my address book that uses facebook with that very valuable info.Every facebook user should use it. At one of the forums I am on some of the extremely security knowledgeable folks used it on facebook accounts they thought were fully locked down and surprisingly it found some places that needed work done, so quite impressive. I do not use facebook, never have and never will just because of some of their careless attitudes about privacy, and the infection rates, and the disgusting creator Mark Z. A recent article which uncovered a conversation between the creator of facebook and a "friend" really exposed just what he thought of the people that signed up to facebook and trusted him with their info. Birthing photos are now a big thing on Facebook. I'm talking babies covered in yuck. Some even show crowning shots, with the mother's anatomy up close and personal. These aren't a few extreme cases either; it's a trend. And the photos are widely shared, not private. They get lots of Likes. What's especially disturbing--besides the obvious--is the way these posters don't recognize any right to react to their photos with anything except admiration. No one ever dares to object, because they know what would happen. "Don't be a hater. What's wrong with you? No one is offended by this!" So the poster thinks everybody approves. And the trend spreads. This is a classic characteristic of narcissists: the inability to recognize that other people and their viewpoints even exist as part of objective, independent reality. But we do exist. And we judge. Good luck getting a job from me in the future after I've seen your business in all its glory.

Anything you don't know how to do, just google search for the answers. Just remember when filling out your profile information, don't give out your personal information. I have seen some people say that they don't use their real names, but as far as I know...everyone that I know uses their real names....I don't know a soul that uses some fictitious name. I actually google searched for my name and not a thing came up that was ME on facebook. And if you have your security settings set to where only your friends can see it, then if someone goes to your facebook profile page by searching for your name(within facebook), all they will be able to see is your name and the profile picture you've chosen. On mine, I just use a picture of an animal and not my face...I'm not trying to reconnect with people I've known from the past. Just be careful that your don't accept bogus friends, I used to get that all the time for some reason but I never do anymore.

You can post a picture of anything -- a flower, a celebrity, whatever. Some people change their profile pictures according to what they are supporting that day. Privacy settings are pretty easy. On the right there is a button "Home" and next to that is a dropdown box. Go to Privacy settings and click on each section. They are pretty self-explanatory. I set everything so that only my friends can see it, and that no one but me can see pictures I'm tagged in. I haven't had any problems.

lol...don't you wish they did? my x sil dumped us (so he could talk about his new gf the nanny) but he must have totally quit at least for now, as he hasn't shown up on his gma's site unless we're blocked from seeing posts? we're still friends with her...

I've been curious about this:

If I view a non-friended person's page called Amy, will I now show up under Amy's "find new friends" list just because I viewed her page?

Private window gives you the option of being on a page without logging in or receiving cookies.

debi, you are not hijacking; that's essentially the question I'm asking! To repeat: if I view someone's page (someone who is not "friended" by me) will my name appear in that person's "find new friends" list, or will anything else alert that person to the fact that I've read his/her page? Still asking since I don't see any definitive answers here yet. Anyone know for sure or know how I can find out??

How to find Private Browsing now: File>New Private Window>

or right click on any link and select Open in new private window

Alternatively, you can use the shortcut "Ctrl+Shift+P

To have it always open in private browsing Tools>options> privacy tab> History> remember History> custom> always open in private browsing mode.

No, looking at someone's page won't cause your name to pop up in their list of suggested friends. The suggested friends are "Friends of Friends". FB is getting more and more convoluted.

I do not want my XH's live-in to be looking at my page. Since we have no friends in common, my name does not pop up for her nor does her's pop up for me. I do not have a picture of me on my profile for privacy reasons.

If you want to know what your page looks like to a non-friend, click on the icon that looks like a lock at the top right of your page. A list will show up that says "Who can See My Stuff". Click on the little down arrow on the right, then click on "What do other people see on my timeline? View as". That will show you how your page looks to the public.

Please set your privacy to Friends Only, and remember that your profile and cover pictures will always be public.
