Exterior shutter advice
Comments (1)Just be sure to mount them correctly: with the inboard edge of each shutter at the edge of the window opening and not mounted so you can see the window trim running down the side of the window between the opening and the shutter edge. Even if the shutters must be (under or over)- sized for the actual window openings, correct hanging balances out a lot. If mounted in the wrong position the shutters will just look like Dumbo ears sticking out from each window opening. Can't help you on materials, though. Sorry! Comments (5)I know it's been a while, but for others who might see this... Looks like you only need to move them a few inches, so my suggestion would be to build a simple mounting block that would cover electrical box and provide a surface to mount the light too while hiding the wires behind the mounting block. If you use a nice hardwood, you could route the edges to make it more decorative and stain it match your door. It could look really nice, if done correctly, and is much easier than modifying the bricks....See MoreUpdating the exterior of rambling rancher, shutters or no shutters?
Comments (8)Thank you for the replies everyone. No we can't change the window order and we actually did consult a designer before I ordered the windows. I asked her opinion on the white windows and she was fine with it knowing I wanted a classic traditional, timeless look. I actually never considered my house to be a MCM. I have an original photo somewhere taken by an appraiser when it was built. I considered it more of a California Rancher with a little Cinderella Rancher thrown in. It has had shutters since it was built, the only difference is that they have been updated over the years getting rid of the chipped edge look. The window with the diamond leaded glass was replaced and the rounded facia boards which extended past the roof by about 4 feet were cut back. I mentioned we are open to getting rid of the shutters we're just wondering how to add more interest or color if we did. It is such a long house, I don't want it to look boring.. A MCM look would not fit in in this old country-like neighborhood. It would stand out. We do have an Eichler neighborhood nearby where that would fit right in. Thanks again....See Moreseeking exterior shutter advice
Comments (3)Shutters will not fit on the second floor window. There is no space between the eaves and the top of the window. Shutters on the lower windows will look odd without shutters on the top window. I'd paint the window trim a color with a higher contrast, like a white to make them stand out more....See MoreTyBarr
